This community was essentially unmoderated for a while and I've been recently approached to take over moderation duties here. What I don't intend to do is to change any existing rules here but to enforce what has piled up in the moderation queue.

The discussion under the recent post about spam accounts turned into a flamewar regarding US domestic politics which has literally nothing to do with the Fediverse.

With dozens of comments, I don't have the bandwidth to sift through them individually and I've locked the thread. The PSA about spam accounts still stands which is why I didn't remove the post. The accounts involved with that flamewar get a pass for this time. Consider this a warning. Further trolling about US political parties will result in bans.

Today, we dig into the nitty-gritty of Surf, a new app by Flipboard. We document what it is, how it works, and areas where the experience could be improved.

Is there a fediverse review platform for movies, booksbooks and the like? Could be very cool imo

Detailed announcement: https://old.reddit.com/r/BlueskySocial/comments/1hbezum/announcing_azskyapp_reddit_built_on_top_of_bluesky/

Posting this here as this could have implications for Lemmy/Piefed/Mbin. People who find our platforms too complex might prefer to use this app as it's built on top of Bluesky, similar to people preferring Bluesky to Mastodon.

Is the fediverse actually ready for government adoption? And how to promote it as a politician?

Hi,

I want to take a little slice of the time I spend watching videos on Youtube and give that slice over to Peertube. I don't mean all of it, given I watch far too much Youtube, but a slither which I hope to grow as Peertube hopefully matures.

As such I don't want to have to make a Peertube account, I want to get Peertube videos straight into my Lemmy feed. To an extent I've already done this, but the videos are just links to the Peertube instance and aren't embedded.

And the other issue is that the comments section is, well, a mess. Lemmy hardly syncs the comments and only does so for comments from other Lemmy instances and the videos Peertube instance.

The first issue feels relatively solvable, Peertube embeds. The second feels like something to do with how activity pub works and as such I have no idea.

I do feel that Peertube is a platform that needs the most support from other platforms in the form of integration, as it's got a very uphill battle ahead of it, and it's the first one I've noticed. but stronger integration between fediverse platforms on Lemmy would doubtless benefit not just those platform but Lemmy as well.

I thought I would post this and get peoples thoughts

Or does it only count upvote only?

I searched lemmy and can't find the answer. Lemmy documentation also didn't specify.

Edit: Sorry didn't really wanna make a whole post about it, but like my curiosity can't stand not knowing every detail of Lemmy. I want to know this so I know how to sort Lemmy better

Follow up Question: Which sorting method do y'all think is the best?

If you go to !videos@lemmy.world and scroll you'll see some of the posts have a youtube thumbnail image, but not all.

I wanna post YouTube videos, but no one seems to engage much without a thumbnail, which makes sense, but I'm not sure what would result in the post actually having a thumbnail

If anyone has advice or guidance I'd appreciate it :) Thanks!

EDIT: so far it seems like it's potentially a combination of what version of lemmy the posters account is running, and how that instance is configured...

Criteria: I'm looking for instances that are defed' with the Big 3 tankies (lemmygrad, lemmy.ml, and hexbear). I have no interest in trying to persuade my friends to create an acc and set up instance blocks before diving in, or dealing with the feedback when they run into the tankie brigade.

Edit: lemmy.cafe and infosec.pub seem to fit. I also find it really interesting just how many of the replies totally ignored my stated criteria.

I currently use mbin and I like it because I like reddit-style social media, but for stuff from specific people and organizations microblog is sometimes better. I want to use the microblog part more (for example, make a post asking the Vivaldi account if there is any possibility of Vivaldi switching to a Firefox base instead of chromium. also I know it's not that easy no need to discuss that on this thread) but tbh I don't understand microblog stuff at all. in particular I want to know how I'm supposed to use @s and #s, and how I'm meant to interact with it. I know this seems kind of silly but I've never really used microblog-style social media until I got into the fediverse a couple months ago.

edit: to clarify, I am not asking how to use the microblog feature of mbin. I am asking about microblog in general.

I'm trying to understand the way Mastodon works. Back in the day I started with IRC and then the many php-based forums and then reddit which led to lemmy. I never used twitter or similar platforms.
My understanding (and this is where I need help) is that all of the above are topic-based, whereas Mastodon is person-based? What I mean is that on lemmy I subscribe to things based on topic and I don't really care about usernames or user profiles, I only care about discussing a topic. It seems to me like Mastodon is the opposite? You follow persons and what they might say about any topic?
Is there something I'm missing here? Are hashtags close enough to sorting it by topic that it works just like a topic based platform? Is this difference inherent or just in my head because I don't understand Mastodon?

If you're reading this, you may be new or interested in seeing what's up.

What the Fed?
So putting it overly simply and from the start, the whole federation thing is basically like you following/subscribing to people/channels to make your timeline or for you page, but it's a whole community activity and some of the people/channels are from a variety of places rather than a single platform.

From there, you then curate what the community's found to suit your interests as you would in other places, following/subscribing and blocking, muting, or keyword filtering, depending on where you're participating from. For what your place and community's found, you'll look through either the "All" or "Other Servers" feeds. "Other Servers" just means only from other places and their communities, meanwhile the "All" feed is a blend of both original stuff from your place and from other places.

If you want to see only what your place's posting, sharing, and discussing, you'd look to either the "Local" or "This Server" feed. If you're from a small place, chances are this may be quieter than bigger places, like a village compared to a city. This may also extend to the aforementioned "All" feeds, but that depends on your place's community and whether they're avid lurkers following and subscribing to many without saying much, or the opposite, highly chatty with each other while not looking much beyond their little place.

Gettin' Messy
But what if your community hasn't found what you'd like to follow yet?

Here's where things get messy and either fun, or frustrating, depending on your mindset and time of day. You gotta roam the web, be curious. See the weird thing after someone's name? Like "DingoDazzle@doughnut.delish?" That "doughnut.delish" is another place with who knows what there. Take a chance and see what else may be found on "doughnut.delish", then copy a username or profile/channel/community link you find there with a different place name like, "MadSodaScientist@chemical.soup" into the search for your place and try to follow it.

Okay, so that's a whole thing, and it's more involved than corporate social media where it's often just a click, but that's how the raw discovery tends to work around here because it's connecting different places. It's clunky and manual, but once you've done it, you've helped your place out by making sure others don't have to do that. It's often a thankless task, but so is much of finding things for strangers.

Also it's worth mentioning, sometimes it won't work in your place, because technology is complicated and hard and everyone's using it a little differently. It's always a little wonder any of this works even a quarter as well as it does, all things considering.

Some Discovery Resources
However, there's more to finding other stuff than that, because the point of all this is community, and that means you're not alone. There's a number of resources to help.

For link aggregators using Lemmy or similar, there's Lemmyverse, for finding communities to subscribe to. Not to mention there's a few communities in these places for announcing and promoting new ones, such as !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !community_promo@lemmy.ca.

For microblogging sites using Mastodon or similar, there's Trunk, Fediverse.info, and Fedi.directory. Also for trying to connect to groups across said sites, there's A.Gup.pe.

It's also commonly recommended to follow hashtags related to your interests, e.g. #SillyTech, but also it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on #FollowFriday. There's also FediFollows that posts regular lists of people and accounts they think may be worth following.

For video sites using Peertube, there's SepiaSearch, and streaming sites using Owncast, there's Owncast Directory.

And if you want to zoom out further, there's Fediverse.observer, where you can see a range of different places using different software to host their communities. It's a great way to explore even further afield.

Think that's all I have for now. Be kindweird, go strange places, share with others, and embrace confusion.

Toss in whatever else you think may be helpful that I'm forgetting/unaware of, keepin' with the attempt to stay on the lighter, non-technical side.

Bridgy Fed, which is working to connect the social network Bluesky with the wider fediverse (i.e., the open social web), which includes sites like Mastodon and others, will be the first app incubated within a new nonprofit called A New Social. The organization, announced Tuesday, aims to bring together developers, researchers, startups, and industry leaders building infrastructure for the open social web, including those adopting protocols like Bluesky’s AT Protocol and ActivityPub, which powers Mastodon, Meta’s Threads, and the rest of the fediverse.

Fun fact: If you use software that support following people like MBin, you can bridge your account too and follow BlueSky folk

I created my community using Sharkey, and I didn’t want to bother the service maintainers any more than I already have, so I’m reaching out here for help. 😂

How did you get your servers online? I manage my domain through Cloudflare, and I tried setting up a tunnel to access my instance. The server is online, and I can access the admin panel via an IP address, but I get an error when I type in the domain via my browser (Firefox). Cloudflare users, I could really use your help!
