Discussion about ClubsAll (sh.itjust.works)

Hello, sh.itjust.works community. I am curious what you think about ClubsAll, and whether you think we should stay federated with them. A few other Lemmy instances have recently defederated so this seems like a timely topic for discussion.

In short, ClubsAll is an ActivityPub-compatible Reddit clone. The site currently has one-way federation with no attribution: ClubsAll pulls content from Lemmy and displays it as local ClubsAll content. For example, you can visit https://clubsall.com/c/196 and there is no indication that the content is from https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/c/196.

Here are relevant posts with more information and context:

In the first post the ClubsAll founder commented that they plan to eventually have two-way federation, and to make the project open source. Whether those things actually happens is anyone's guess.

What do you think?

I'm not sure what happened, but for the last few days I'd had no notifications for new replies (which were coming in thick and fast), and it was absolute bliss.

Unfortunately I had a power cut and my PC rebooted, and now the notifications are back (including those that weren't showing before), so I assume it was an error on my end but still - is it possible to make this a real option?

In an ideal world it would be like on reddit where you could switch off notifications per post and even per thread, but I'll take an all or nothing option at this point.

This is an update to a previous post: https://sh.itjust.works/post/26389783

The spam wave has slowed down significantly, so we have unblocked almost all of the Misskey and Mastodon instances that were being used to relay the spam posts. Six instances are going to stay on our block list for now:

  • kitsui.life
  • lawsocial.org
  • m.corduba.tech
  • puls.social
  • seda.social
  • startrekshitposting.com

It is interesting to note that these six instances are also considered abandoned by IFTAS, and have been added to the IFTAS DNI list.
https://mastodon.iftas.org/@sw_isac/113317470469259706

Since we're adjusting our instance blocks, we have taken this opportunity to update the sh.itjust.works Censures list in Fediseer to match our current block list.
https://gui.fediseer.com/instances/detail/sh.itjust.works

That is all. Have a good day, everyone!

Edit: transforthe.win is also now on our block list. Spam posts are still coming from that instance.

Hello everyone. In the interest of transparency, I want to fill you in on some recent admin activity here at sh.itjust.works.

The post shown in the attached image may look familiar. A large number of Misskey and Mastodon accounts started spamming similar posts yesterday. Some have spilled over into Lemmy because the posts mention specific communities by name. The spam wave is ongoing at the time that I am making this post.

sh.itjust.works has temporarily defederated from 34 Misskey and Mastodon instances to slow the flow of posts. However, the accounts are spread across so many instances that a block list can’t stop everything. Fortunately, our automod bot is doing a good job of catching additional posts as they appear. We should be able to refederate with the Misskey and Mastodon instances once the spam wave passes.

If you see a post that slipped by our automod, please report it so we can remove it.

If you are curious about the extent that this spam wave is affecting Lemmy, look at the modlog for the lemmy.world AutoMod bot. That instance is relying more on their automod to mitigate this spam wave than we are, and you can clearly see how much work their bot has been doing. As I type this post it has banned+removed well over 200 Misskey and Mastodon spam accounts in the past day.
https://lemmy.world/modlog?page=1&actionType=ModBan&modId=2349429

I want to end with a shout out to all the users who identified and reported these posts, and all the proactive admins on other Lemmy instances who were quick to jump on this problem. Thank you, everyone, for making Lemmy better for the whole community!

That is all for now. Have a great day!

Edit: this issue also exists on other instances on 0.19.5, or newer, on my browser

I've been using Sync for Lemmy for a year or so, but very recently (within the last day or so) links have stopped showing as read when I click on them and then go back. I tested this with a lemmy.world account and don't have the same problem.

I saw a post saying sh.itjust.works was updating to Lemmy v19.5 a few days ago. I'm wondering if maybe it caused a problem or if it's just me having this issue.

Thanks

SJW upgrade to v19.5 (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) by TheDude@sh.itjust.works to c/main@sh.itjust.works

Hello sh.itjust.works community,

It’s been a while since my last update, and I owe you all a more detailed one soon. However, today I’m here to give you a heads-up about the upcoming upgrade.

Over the next 7 days, I’ll be upgrading the instance to v19.5. While this update doesn’t strictly require it, I’ve decided to take this opportunity to upgrade our Postgres database from version 15 to 16 as well. This process can be time-consuming and have take up to 2 hours to complete on other instance.

I'm optimistic that we'll complete it in less time, but to err on the side of caution, I've scheduled the maintenance window for 120 minutes.

To minimize downtime, I've split the upgrade into two phases: Phase one will cover the database update, and Phase two will handle the Lemmy code upgrade.

Note: If the database upgrade is completed in under 60 minutes, I’ll proceed with the Lemmy code upgrade during the same maintenance window.

Here's the tentative timeline:

Task Date Expected Downtime
Upgrade of Postgres Database Friday September 20 2024 @ 8:00PM ET 60-120 Minutes
Upgrade to V19.5 ~~Monday or Tuesday September 23 or 24 @ 8:00PM ET~~ ~~Up to 30 Minutes~~

During these two planned events those who want to provide moral support or who want to get periodic updates are more than welcome to join us on our matrix channel

edit: 9:23EDT - Hey all, the database and lemmy codebase has been upgraded to v19.5. The database upgrade took a lot less time than expected so I went right into upgrading the codebase. A whole bunch of background tasks are still running which might make your experience slower than usual. Things should be back to normal in the next couple of hours.

I'd like to report mod activity that's not following sitewide rules on your server and instead bans people because they feel it's not worth their time. I would like for the mod to be overlooked.

The sitewide rule #1 says I can expect to participate without harassment and feel welcome. If I call a mod to look over a user breaking this rule, I should expect them to intervene, right?

So I don't understand why @Apytele@sh.itjust.works is deleting all my comments and banning me instead of the person being aggressive towards me because "both sides of the argument are nonsense" without even bothering with the actual concern. I didn't call them over to look at anyone's argument, I specifically stated in my report that the other person was being extremely disrespectful.

So now I'm banned:

Banned Lemminary from the community Curated Tumblr@sh.itjust.works reason: troll expires: in 30 days

Their excuse? I'm a troll, apparently. I invite anyone to check the messages to see if that's true or if I'm merely sharing my opinion.

I don't care about the ban--keep it that way. But please let me know if something is being done about these mods who enjoy pushing people around. It's infuriating that on top of being dog-piled on, berated & insulted in the thread all day (I got links), I also get treated this way by the people who have taken on the role of protecting users. If I hit the report button, I entrust the person in charge to keep a level head and do their job fairly.

Thank you for your time.

quakers.social shows up on our list of blocked instances, but looking at the most recent posts at https://quakers.social/public/local I can't see why. They seem like a harmless group with a lot of religious reposts. Does sh.itjust.works have a policy of reciprocal blocking or something like that?

I have several photos which I can't seem to post. After poking around a bit, I found out that this server has an upload size limit of 5 MB.

Now, an upload size is perfectly reasonable. Storage is expensive, and Lemmy is primarily designed for link aggregation and discussion, not file hosting.

However, the way the system currently fails when it encounters a large file is not ideal, and varies depending on the app/UI.

At best, you get a cryptic error message like {"data":{"msg":"Exceeded maximum dimensions","files":null},"state":"success"}, and at worst, your webpage/app stalls for an indefinite amount of time.

Obviously, it would be prudent for the Lemmy devs to improve the comprehensibility of the error messages, but if there were a way to automatically compress large images to below the size limit, that would eliminate the error messages in the first place.

I believe this instance uses Pict-rs to host images, is that correct?

I came across these discussion threads in the Lemmy and Pict-rs source code:

Would it be feasible to implement automatic image compression on this server? If it has already been implemented in pict-rs, might it just be a matter of passing an additional argument to pict-rs?

This feature would make things smoother for users, especially for new users who might not be aware of the upload size limit and just think "Lemmy doesn't work, I guess I'll go back to Reddit".

The Olympics have always done a great job at gathering the best athletes around the world to compete for gold. It's easy to not fully grasp just how great these athletes are which is why I'd love to see them throw in the average person into every competition (with the exception to those that can get people seriously hurt) and have those people compete with the worlds best.

This person would need to accept beforehand that there would be no chance for them but instead help showcase the difference. Hell, they could even be given participation medals.

Thoughts?

I might not be understanding something about the fediverse, but isn't this like if you couldn't send or receive email from a friend because you use gmail Google decided to block @icloud domains?

Like, you're not forced to follow or interact with it, and are free to block it if you can think of a reason to, I just don't see why such an open platform used to limit users in this way

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but my main account @i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk appears to have been banned. Can it be unbanned please? Or at least an explanation of why it is? Thanks

Hello everyone,

I know it's summer and people are probably on annual leave, but do you have any idea on when you guys are going to update to the 0.19.5 version?

SJW is the 3rd most active Lemmy instance, so it impacts the experience of a lot of users

And the mod @nuke@sh.itjust.works will do anything to silence people talking about it.

Why is such a hate community that larps/memes as loving crimes against humanity and terrorist groups like blackwater so well received? This is the sort of shit you'd see on 4chan.

I've been using an app so long I forgot my actual password! But when I go on the sh.itjust.works main site and put my email in the reset page it doesn't really do anything

Edit nvm I remembered my password but still the reset function didn't work for me so for the sake of other users it should be checked out

Happy cake day, sh.itjust.works!

Many of us are having our cake days, or are close to them. What were your highlights over the past year? Did you enjoy or appreciate a particular community, user, trend, or something else? We want to hear about it!

Joyeux anniversaire, sh.itjust.works!

It's stressing me out to leave communities that are relevant to it unblocked. The sheer cynicism is affecting my mood and I'm having to block all communities about real life news of any kind for personal health, so I am wondering if anyone considers "A Boring Dystopia, but instead of being boring, it's edgy or (at best) a cool workaround for corporate internet BS." a deserving project to continue? I plan to remain lead mod but give the first new moderator free reign; I wouldn't be asking this if I had any intention of ever pulling anything stupid like deleting it on a whim, I think I would like to see it continue but in better hands than my own.
