Eternity. I used Infinity when I was on Reddit, so its not new to me, and there are features I like about it
Eternity haven't been updated in 2 months, and 0.19 lemmy update broke some functionality.
I haven't experienced any issues so far but I'll keep an eye out on that link you sent, thanks
Ahhh, that's why I can't log into the app through my account
The latest version of Eternity is compatible with Lemmy 0.19. You might need to log out and log back in, though.
However, the new functions aren't implemented yet (e.g. the new sorting methods)
For me, logout+login fixed all the issues. I thought it was broken too until I tried last night
Thunder is my main app and it's updated regularly as well. Jerboa is my second choice because that's the "official" Lemmy app.
I was a big fan of LiftOff!, unfortunately, the developer had twins back in the summer and understandably, the app hasn't been updated since.
Using Eternity as my main but that swipe to upvote Thunder has is damn sexy ^__^
Just curious, what makes Jerboa the "official" Lemmy app?
Jerboa is created by the developers of Lemmy.
Oh 🤦
So far, out of the suggestions in the comments, the only ones that are FOSS and currently work with the latest versions of lemmy are Jerboa, Thunder, and Voyager. Liftoff and Eternity are also FOSS, but haven't been updated since July and October respectively, so may have issues if your instance is running version 0.19+.
Boost and Sync are both closed source and I really wish people would stop recommending them in a community specifically for free and open-source software. I'm sure they're good apps and I don't begrudge devs making money from their work, but if they do I don't want them getting free advertising in the comments of a FOSS-specific community.
Eternity is fine. You just need to log out and back in. I'm using it now.
Details here: https://codeberg.org/Bazsalanszky/Eternity/releases/tag/v0.1.2
When the title is "best Lemmy app" and the body is just "which Lemmy app do you use for Android and why" you can understand why someone would just scroll through and contribute their experience with Sync right?
Just like every other link aggregator: people on All don't pay attention to the specific community.
It's not malice, just people being oblivious. It's not worth getting worked up about.
I definitely can understand it, but that isn't mutually exclusive with me wishing people would take a second to check the community they're commenting in.
I've never implied it was malice (suggesting closed-source software in a FOSS community is a pretty weak example in maliciousness even if on purpose!) And really I wouldn't say I'm worked up, I just wanted to bring this up because I've noticed this type of thing happen across a couple FOSS communities on lemmy and maybe someone will see my original comment and be more mindful of it next time.
Jerboa. It ticks all the boxes, is updated, and looks good
Eternity, fork of Infinity which was my reddit app of choice. Also foss obv. Great app.
Also use jerboa and liftoff.
- Eternity, but clicking in an Notification E-Mail on the Lemmy Inbox link, does not open Eternity on the Inbox.
- Voyager is also fine, but i has strange look on Android, looks more like made for Apple.
- Jerboa is nice to, but lacks options to change the fonts
- Sync for Lemmy is nice, but its closed source and has ads (can be removed when you pay enough 20,99€)
- Some other apps in the Playstore, but most of them are not worth to use them
- Thunder seems to be nice, but I really miss 'Mark as read on scroll' feature, which is very important for me
- there is 'Commit for Lemmy' on the play store, most features I want are there but a) its not available on F-Droid and b) crash from time to time
- 'Boost for Lemmy' looks really nice. I couldn't find a setting for 'Mark as read on scroll'. Maybe it's enabled by default. If that's true, I would keep this app. There is a option to remove ads for 3.59€ which is a fine for me. But I have not seen any ad as of now. Be aware that there are 6 Trackers in this app, but since I use PiHole, it's not really important for me.
Currently im using mostly Eternity and hope that some bugs get sorted out sooner or later. But Boost would be good next candidate, if 'Mark as read on scroll' is supported. Arch f not, the next best alternative is Jerboa.
I've kept coming back to Voyager. The main draw is the functionality marking posts read on scroll, hiding read posts, and otherwise being feature complete (nothing broken as far as I can tell, and is keeps up with Lemmy updates).
Voyager. It's the only one with a "hide posts I've already read" button that I've tried, and any app without that button isn't worth even comparing to.
Oh yeah, there's also an option to make All exclude communities you're subbed to, which makes it way easier to discover new communities.
...there's also an option to make All exclude communities you're subbed to
Damn, today I learnt. I've been using it for several months now and apparently never had a good look through the settings. That's awesome.
Thunder has that button
Voyager is nice. It does look a little weird on android, but it's kind of a nice look, imho
I'm on boost, I loved it for reddit, and now I get to enjoy it on Lemmy as well.
Unfortunately it's not FOSS, but it is just a single dev from Portugal and I'm happy with that.
Ahh, didn't see which community this was posted in. You're right, not foss
I tried jerboa, voyager (formally known as wefwef) and eternity and settled for voyager. It just feels very smooth, has all the functionality I need and looks clean. No reason to look further for me.
Thunder.
It is simple to use, has elegant design and does absolutely everything I need it to do.
Edit: link: https://github.com/thunder-app/thunder
I tried a few, started with liftoff.
Liftoff was okay, but UI was not my case
Never get warm with Voyager
Connect was okay
Eternity was pretty good, best IMO for open source
Now I bought Boost and never regret it. Feels best for me
I think Boost gets recommended often for good reason. Even if it isn't using existing code, design-wise it likely still would be the furthest developed Lemmy app since he's worked on the Boost for Reddit app for so long.
As of right now, I think it may only be missing specifically hide on read. However it does have mark and dim on read in the settings, and for now the Mute dialogue option is a fine alternative.
Unfortunately it's not FOSS, but it's just a single dev from Portugal and paying for the app removes any tracking present from the ads.
I'm currently using jerboa because it's the only one AFAIK that can mark posts as read while scrolling
I use eternity; I havent found something that it struggles with yet. Can anyone here let me know why use decided against eternity? I dont really know its limitations since I've only used it.
I like eternity, but since my instance updated its been pretty bugged out.
I didn't like the colors and ui (material you theme still shows the ugly blue and pink)
I use Connect for Lemmy. It's as free, but closed source. The developer is available and fairly responsive in !lemmyconnect@lemmy.ca
I recommend opting into the beta version on the Playstore to get some features a little earlier. For example, Lemmy 0.19 introduces the new Scaled and Controversial sort options, which are amazing -- particularly Scaled if you're subscribed to smaller communities. However, Connect for Lemmy only has that sort option in the beta at the moment.
The only thing I don't like is that you cannot paste images from the clipboard into comments.
That's the only downside of Connect currently. Development is pretty slow. App is mostly working fine but it has a few small annoying bugs.
I'm on IOS and use Thunder, but I know it's cross platform so it should be available in Android as well. Why Thunder? Because it doesn't look like another Apollo clone, which a lot of lemmy apps seem to try to emulate.
Sync is the most polished and best looking. But ads so I dunno your call. I like it.
To be frank I've never seen ads on free sync, maybe it's a bug?¯\_ʘ‿ʘ_/¯
It shows some big blank spaces from time to time... I've assumed it's a bug related to the pi-hole 👀
I use both Sync and Jerboa. Jerboa because it was there first in the great migration, and Sync because it's a nice UI and I wanted to reward the dev for coming over from Reddit.
Edit- funnily enough, I'm posting this on my Kbin account since Beehaw defeded from Lemmy.World
I really like Thunder (GitHub, IzzyOnDroid, Lemmy community)
Summit gang represent.
It's basic, it's fairly lightweight, and it does the job.
Agreed summit is great. It's my go to until sync gets some more updates
I'm still using the PWA. It works fine and does everything I could want.
I've just been using the mobile web UI.
I really like Sync but I've found myself just using my mobile browser to interact with instances when on my phone. Also, if you want open source, Sync ain't it.
A combination of Boost for my primary account, and Sync for my alternate(s). I don't need two, but this helps me to better visually separate where I am.
Free and Open Source Software
If it's free and open source and it's also software, it can be discussed here. Subcommunity of Technology.
