Russia just hacked Japan Airlines in response. I swear I'll open a champagne when that evil empire will cease to exist

[-] Maalus@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

They'll cease to exist the same way the Soviet Union did - silent for a while, then the same shit over again.

Yeah, it's true. Maybe this time, the root cause, the KGB, will finally be eradicated.

Also, though, the empire did shrink quite a lot last time, so hey, it's a step in the right direction lol

The problem fundamentally is that the Russian people crave autocracy, maybe not on an individual level but certainly on a collective level.

Rural, uneducated, poor, hyperreligious, xenophobic bumpkins are always the foundation of support for every single autocrat in the last century.

Well, maybe we'll be a bit better prepared next time

So many Russians crying about this after opting in to an undemocratic fiat currency.

[-] anzo@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

When did they opt-in the fiat currency, exactly?

what other option did they have?

And, most importantly, what was the last product (other than fiat) you bought with crypto?

Stop burning our planet, billionaire wannabe.

You're asking what other option they had out of one side of your mouth, while criticizing that option out the other side.

Why is my pizza place anecdotally accepting crypto important? If my answer was supposed to be "nothing [I just don't want it seized because I was born in an imperialist oligarchy too]", what was going to be your response?

Since you're not offering an alternative yourself, it sounds like you're suggesting they stay on the Ruble. Which hurts the environment even more (encourages consumption) and worsens inequality even more (Cantillon effect).

If you do have a better option, then I'd like to hear that!

[-] anzo@programming.dev 2 points 16 hours ago

Fair. That pizza place is really special, as you may know.

Sure, I got carried away.

But my first question was the most "relevant". Your claim, as an opt-in is far from what this is. The economy is ongoing in a way such that using other currencies (crypto, yuan, euro, whatever) is not much of an option. That's what I meant to point out. I didn't like the "tone" from where you were writing...

Anyway, back to the assets, these are mainly dollars from big russian companies that were in banks abroad. If I'm not mistaken... it's far from the rubles of layman persons and common population.

It is pretty awesome. They have a discount and accept Lightning, both of which should be common but aren't. But again that's super anecdotal evidence because I live in a major city and looked for them.

Crypto in Russia kinda is still an option, they're #7 globally. But I apologize for my tone, it's easy to say which choice was better in hindsight.

Why are there so many articles that drop the second Y from his name? It's Zelenskyy. I haven't seen an article on Lemmy in the past couple weeks that spelled his name right.

[-] smeenz@lemmy.nz 102 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

His name is spelled Зеленський. Any conversion to English letters requires following a method of romanising Cyrillic letters. The most common method, which admittedly is used in Russia, is to represent the ий with just a single Y, but in Ukraine I believe it's more common to use two.

Nevertheless, people don't always use the same system, just as Chinese 北京 "Beijing" used to be written as Peking, due to the Romanisation system of the time.

With the current political climate, it's probably best to use the double Y spelling.

Thanks for that breakdown. Very informative.

I regret to inform you that my mind has been blown on this day.

[-] tired_n_bored@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

The literal translation would be Zelenskiy (he writes his own surname this way) but for English speakers it doesn't add any value to add an extra letter

[-] Doom@ttrpg.network 4 points 2 days ago

I think the I is a Russia thing I think the doubles y is Ukrainian
