Yeah I saw it reported in a few online publications all crediting Lloyd's as the source. I think it took longer to hit mainstream news because of the holidays. FYI, I didn't think it was to embarrass Russia, I'm just leary of war propaganda (remember Ghost of Kiev?) and anything click-baity. Actual news reporting/opinion/bullshit all look the same online. Nobody wants to pay for anything anymore and that doesn't help

The company’s website claims the company be registered in England

I like how the author briefly breaks character and reveals themself as a 19th century pirate.

[-] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago

I mean, I guess the tanker was acting like a privateer.

The dawn of the second age of pirates be at hand.

[-] PixellatedDave@lemmy.world 16 points 22 hours ago

Couldn't cutting the cable be classed as an act of war against two NATO members?

[-] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 27 points 22 hours ago

We have been de facto at war for a while. And world War 3 has already been raging for years now. Just none of it is presently like the movies and fiction told people what it would be.

Depending on what America decides to do the next year could see a change in that. Russia and Europe could start shooting at each other sooner than anyone wants to admit. Not because Europe is itching to get into a nuclear war. But more because Russia is a dying nation and will act more and more erratic as they lose control of their empire.

[-] TacoSocks@infosec.pub 10 points 18 hours ago

I wouldn't say WW3 is raging, but you could argue we are back in another cold war.

[-] recreationalcatheter@lemm.ee 3 points 8 hours ago

The cold war never ended. It has ballooned into ww3.

[-] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 7 points 13 hours ago

its far beyond cold war. Russia, while not the primary opponent of America see China, is engaged in full scale war with a neighbor who's being pumped full of weaponry for its defense, and the Europeans are panicking , realizing they have an existential crisis on their hands. Both sides are committing acts of war against each other on the regular.

and elsewhere, the Israeli/Arab/Iranian conflict more or less has battle lines driven between countries that are allied with Russia and ones that aren't, While they aren't helping each other, Ukraine and Israel are both facing off against Russian/Iranian Forces and their proxies.

I say we're fighting WW3 right now, because the allegory of 2022-present is comparable to either the Spanish Civil war, or the Sino-Japanese war, both conflicts that saw direct confrontation involving the aggressor in testing grounds for the future

[-] Doom@ttrpg.network 1 points 15 hours ago

It ain't cold tho it's proxy at and honestly that boat that ran into the bridge in Baltimore I'm convinced was an intended attack

[-] SaltySalamander@fedia.io 1 points 7 hours ago

Pretty much the entirety of the cold war was actually a proxy war, not much different than this.

[-] Doom@ttrpg.network 1 points 5 hours ago

okay you are right about that I feel the cold war was so because of the open hostility between the pair where this time half our politicians have Russian or Chinese nuts in their mouth and vice versa we're much more intertwined

Finland is a fine addition to NATO

Sweden is an addition to NATO

[-] Nikelui@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago

Since 7 March this year? How did I miss it?

[-] cygnus@lemmy.ca 43 points 1 day ago

Why are these tankers not subject to sanctions if their ownership is so well-known that Lloyd's can report on it with absolute certainty?

[-] Shadow@lemmy.ca 27 points 1 day ago

Did Russia think the ship wouldn't be intercepted or something? Seems odd to burn this ship to cut that cable.

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 6 points 22 hours ago

The last one got away with it not long ago, although I believe that one was owned by China. Guess they thought it was the perfect time to go for another.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago

I think it's more of a 'poke the bear' scenario at this point.

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 2 points 15 hours ago

Well, Russia now has the attention of the alliance. I don't think they'll be happy about that...

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

They had the attention already. They just want to see how far they can go now.

[-] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Big fucking surprise.

[-] FeloniousPunk@lemmy.today 12 points 1 day ago

Sink ‘em all, let Davy Jones sort ‘em out.

[-] Free_Opinions@feddit.uk 11 points 1 day ago

Let's not sink fuel carrying tankers on a already heavily polluted baltic sea.

So Turkey is working alongside Russia to spy on NATO?

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 8 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

I didn't get that from the article but they've been a bitch of a member. Always causing problems. I fear they'll do the same if they join the EU. But maybe better kept in the corral than running wild across the pasture so to speak.

Edit to add- they disgust me by using the unstable situation in Syria to further attack the Kurdish people and the Kurdish-led multi-ethnic free democratic communities of North and East Syria. Rojava has been an amazingly resilient force for good and equitable democracy in the region. It's a place where a woman could flee from ISIS slavery and have all their needs met, even if one of those needs is "give me a gun, I'm going to kill those motherfuckers".

Turkey has been supplying and paying rebel groups opposed to these ideals because its autocratic government considers every Kurd a terrorist. They have been attacking wonderful accepting helpful people, using the Syrian revolution as cover.

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 3 points 21 hours ago

They said listening and recording equipment was brought on to the 20-year-old tanker via “huge portable suitcases” along with “many laptops” that had keyboards for Turkish and Russian languages when calling at Türkiye and Russia.

And

“Russians, Turkish, Indian radio officers were operating it.”

Does this not imply that that they were used by both Turkey and Russia?

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

Possibly, I wouldn't guarantee it though. It's like a pirate ship interfacing with a criminal organization. Just because some of them were Indian should we indict the government of India as well?

Perhaps I'm erring on the side of caution. I hate the government of Turkiye. I hate the government of Russia. I also hate the government of India although maybe they're not as fascist?

Hell I hate my own government so fuck it maybe the US outfitted a Greenland shark with diamond blade carbon steel teeth 100 years ago and just activated the beacon to destroy the lines instead of just gnaw on them.

[-] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Turkey is a nato member on paper only. Theyre more interested in garbing a sphere of influence in the middle east as Iran falters.

[-] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

This is incorrect. They are a voting member and have used their vote many times to keep countries out until they get paid off.

[-] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

using an alliance as blackmail honeypot rather than to address security concerns of europe and the atlantic region. yeah..

[-] Hikermick@lemmy.world 0 points 19 hours ago

Any news organizations besides "Lloyd's List" reporting this?

[-] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 12 points 18 hours ago

Lloyd's List is one of the world's oldest continuously running journals, having provided weekly shipping news in London as early as 1734. But, sure, they could have made the whole thing up to make Russia look bad. :) Look around, maybe you can find something more credible to your tastes.

[-] Hikermick@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

Thanks for the info, I had never heard of it
