The fediverse and the surge in open source has made the internet fun again. I haven't had this much fun with the internet since the mid to late 90s.

True, it is like a breath of fresh air. I've thought that the internet has felt cancerous for at least a decade at this point, but with the Fediverse everything has felt so nice again for the first time in ages.

The fediverse takes the corporate out of social media!

Now let's do this, but with Matrix (federated Discord-like chat) on Discord channels or it's other media. Discord has repeatedly shown that they treat their users like shit, just like Reddit.

I couldn't stay on Discord even long enough to be treated like shit. It has such an unintuitive and clumsy interface, at least for an old fart like me.

As much as I like Matrix, it's in no way a replacement from Discord. It's like going back to Skype.

As someone who has used Matrix since the beginning and have never seen Discord. What am I missing?

[-] mojo@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Discords has really advance servers with all kinds of features that Matrix isn't even close to competing with. Matrix added spaces, but that's still a super half baked feature that doesn't even begin to compare. It's hard to go into Discord servers because there's so much you can do with them.

Any features that are mentionable? I don't use spaces on Matrix.

From an apparently uninformed discord user, deets? Granted, I've been annoyed at their insistence on monetizing via unasked-for "perks" I've absolutely never even thought to be interested in. But I've never felt like I was treated ill, and I assume there's something I haven't heard of

Okay, let's go

  1. They know what you're talking about with your friends.
  2. They block your account until you provide your phone number if they see you're using VPN or Tor.
  3. They are disabling users' accounts and not providing reason.
  4. It's centralized.
  5. It's a spyware. They log everything you click (you can send a data request and see).
  6. They force you to use a closed-source client and you can't use an alternative client because they will probably disable your account.
  7. They changed the nickname system and made it pay to win.

Need more?

The creation of the universe is a miracle ✨️

The creation of lemmy is an extension of that, and the boundaries of collective of thought.
