her mother died 2 weeks ago.

I told her I'm sorry but after thinking about what to say I couldn't come with anything better than repeating sorry again. She then told me and another coworker how she died.

I want to show her that I care but I don't want her mother's death to become the elephant in the room each time we talk.

This is not romantic in any way.

I was watching an upload by Prompt Engineering on the SmolAgents agentic rag project. In it they talk about the importance of forming questions in the same affirmative voice that the LLM will respond with. My understanding is fuzzy here. Language is not my strongest subject. So maybe ELI5 please. What is "asking questions in an affirmative voice," and more importantly, what is it in contrast to other forms of voicing?

He headlined the two most bought and highest grossing pro wrestling PPVs of all time (2007 & 2012). Yet people don’t see him as the biggest draw.

Wouldn’t being able to get people to pay actual money to watch you, instead of just watching for free make you a legit draw?

Available online as in, you just log in to a website and use it, not on hugging face or github, where you need to download, install and configure.

LLMs are already made so "safe" that they won't even describe an erotic or crime story - content you would easily find visually represented in all its detail on Netflix, Amazon, HBO, youtube, etc. Ie writing "Game of Thrones" with an AI is not possible in most chat bots anymore.

I don't know if I should change the title to 'does unbiased media exist?'

I just found out a Washington Post cartoonist quit after a Bezos satire she draw was rejected.

I was until today a reader of said newspaper, but after this kind of censorship I don't know if I should keep reading it.

Note that I'm not looking for media sources that fabricate outrage either for the left or for the right or news sources whose business model is to editorialize titles to work people up. I'm just looking for unbiased media sources.

Maybe this was a stupid question: everyone is biased, or am I wrong?

I tried to go to the Phillips website then I went into the eye comfort section and clicked on shop all eye, comfort bulbs, and it saysI’m sorry there’s nothing available which I know is BS. The website is broken.

And I don’t even care if it’s Phillips or a different brand I need something that runs in the 3000 K range. I’d love 3500 but I don’t think I can get that. With flicker free ( and I have just spent the last 4 1/2 hours looking Online and I can’t come up with anything so does anybody have any ideas of what I can buy and please offer a link to a product.

I am now currently using the last of my incandescent bulbs. If one of them burns out I am out of luck my room will be dark.

Normal lightbulb. A19 type

Or am I just searching for something that literally doesn’t exist?

Just think about it! It'll be easy to cut ties, just get a job with an easy employer and move out! If only...

Like, why is it so widespread, what causes it, what solutions are available, etc. I don't really know how to ask this question so I hope I'm making sense

I'm interested in automatically generating lengthy, coherent stories of 100,000+ words from a single prompt using an open source local large language model (LLM). I came across the "Awesome-Story-Generation" repository which lists relevant papers describing promising methods like "Re3: Generating Longer Stories With Recursive Reprompting and Revision", announced in this Twitter thread from October 2022 and "DOC: Improving Long Story Coherence With Detailed Outline Control", announced in this Twitter thread from December 2022. However, these papers used GPT-3, and I was hoping to find similar techniques implemented with open source tools that I could run locally. If anyone has experience or knows of resources that could help me achieve long, coherent story generation with an open source LLM, I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance.

Would it make sense for "rhyme" to rhyme with "time"?

Or for "through" to rhyme with "two"?

Fun decision that makes a lot of sense, right? Christmas for my family was a lot of gift card "tell me what you used it for" sort of gifts, which l generally prefer these days.

I have enough to get an electronic drum set I could learn the drums on without annoying the hell out of everyone around me (I could use a headset with them). I do want to learn drums some day, but just for fun. There's no real goal outside if it looking fun to do.

The quality of pressure washer I would want to use would cost about the same as the drum kit and I cannot justify getting booth right now. I have used pressure washers before and I quite enjoy it. Someday I might even consider a cleaning business, so seeing if the magic grows or fades with a quality unit would be helpful.

I lean towards the later just because I don't know that I have the room for a drum kit right now. Thoughts, opinions?

I'm wondering if it's pseudo religious with humans being created in God's image (Ancient Aliens stuff), the human-centric idea that intelligent life must resemble us, it being easy to make costumes for movies and TV when all you need to do is paint someone's skin, or if SciFi writers were going for the uncanny valley effect for example.

I know not all praying religions have their adherents join their hands, but I think it's the case for most. Many cultures even use clasped hands in day-to-day life as a sign of deference or pleading (which I guess makes them "social prayers").

My only 'armchair anthropologist' theory is that hands that are gripped together are unable to present a threat to you, so it is a signal of voluntary vulnerability. But that doesn't make sense in a religious context (although it does in the social context), because how would you ever be a threat to any god in the first place? 🤔 If anything, you're displaying arrogance by saying to god "yeah I COULD fuck you up, but just for this conversation, I'm gonna decommission my arms, arms which I have to register as deadly weapons by the way".

A secondary question on this topic is what is the function of praying hands in the praying process? If you say a prayer without joining your hands, does it not reach god? Or does he hear it but he's like "uhhh, excuse me?? Forgetting something? No childhood leukaemia cure for you, I guess!" like an overly-pedantic lawyer?

Third question: Do any holy books actually describe or prescribe 'praying hands'? If so, what do they have to say about it?

Cheers! 🙏

I’ve been running into several problems with restoring MySQL backups. Namely, the backups come from an environment other than the one I’m working in and I’m forced to remove superuser commands contained in the backups.

The problem is when trying to remove those commands I’m constantly getting UTF-8 encoding errors because there are loads of invalid character sequences.

Why would MySQL encode a backup as UTF-8 if the data isn’t actually UTF-8? This feels like bad design to me.

I’ve only used Lemmy amongst the panoply of ActivityPub compatible social networks; am I seeing and interacting with posts from Mastodon, Friendica, et al. and just not aware of it?

people do not quit jobs, they quit managers and I personally would like to quit some coworkers.

Basically the manager says in public that I'm good and passionate about the job but privately she writes the opposite. She never talked to me about what I need to improve, if anything. And then has the gall to tell me to trust her if I want to open up to her. Two faced, not to trust.

I only found out when another manager read to me what she wrote about me.

I was never good at playing office politics. FWIW I don't like the job, I do it because I need money and I'm good at it.

I'd expect the shortest day of the year to also be the coldest, with the coldest season of the year spreading out equally on both sides of it.

I live near a major airport and see commercial planes with huge front headlights shining in the night sky. What could they be good for way up in the sky, though? I get that when they are taking off/landing headlights are necessary. Why not give them lights like a boat, with a green in front and a red in back?

If so, do cell phone networks still get stressed?

It shows fever is a symptom. Even if I ask the question of what is the most common symptoms it still shows fever. Did Covid mutate again and now fever is one of the most common symptoms?

I’d say an average sized zucchini slathered in olive oil.

Lamp's function is going to provide light to the sheet music, that's it.

All I've found online is cheap. I just want something durable and reliable (meaning for the next 40 years), something I can attach an E26 or E12 to, nothing fancy, but durable.
