Hi all, I played the shadow of the tombs raider back in August and got to about 25% of it. Today I wanted to play it and thought I'd be able to just continue, but I was wrong. First, steam was saying the game was "out of sync" so I clicked it and it said it was "up to date". Launched the game and it's almost from scratch, like 1 %, so me panik. Looked into the saved data files and they have all these .dat files with one that is a cloud one. Looked online and found a post where someone said I can download my old saves and add them to the folder. Sure enough, downloaded the .dat files for the correct date, but they have reaaaaally long names that have the paths to where they were saved then at the end of each name was the correct name (blahblahblahlinuxsomethingsave206.dat for example). Tried two ways,

One: removed the existing .dat files and replaced them with the ones I downloaded (with their long names)and launched the game. Same thing. I was watching the new ones get created and take over the old ones. Nope, still 1% in the game.

Two: same as one, but I renamed the files to match the existing ones which I removed and replaced. So, save202.dat, save206.dat, profile.dat.....etc Same thing. Am I doing this wrong? How do I go about it? I really don't want to start over on the game. I run Linux, if that makes any difference. Thank you in advance.

Hello everyone! I have this issue with my steam on arch linux where it takes about 5 minutes and sometimes more to start, then I keep getting connection errors when trying to sign in. Ive opened an issue on the github page you can read for more details (logs etc)

Basically now I'm wondering if I should just reinstall steam and see if that fixes it. Here is the situation though. I have a steam library in my /home partition, as well as on a separate hard drive which is always mounted. I have copied the steamapps directory from the home side of things to a temporary location, so I assume if I reinstall and copy it back I should have all my games and stuff set up exactly as they were before the issue? Also, do I need to backup the steamapps directory from the hard drive which is separate to /home?

The reason I'm so hesitant to just wipe everything and reinstall, is because I spent a good couple of weeks trying to get Silent Hunter 3 set up with steamtinkerlaunch, and even on release it was quite a finnicky game, let alone 20-something years later on linux running through proton, and now I have it at a point where it works.

Anyway, I would love some help, so thanks in advance!

P.s. Updating system didn't solve issue

Just checked, and I have all the dependencies listed on the package page satisfied in some form. Now, whether some version is slightly outdated, I don't know how to check

Reinstalling steam doesn't seem to fix the issue.

pacman -R steam-native-runtime steam
pacman -S steam

When launching from the terminal again I get the same output. The 2 lines that stand out are the following:

src/clientdll/steamengine.cpp (2773) : Assertion Failed: CSteamEngine::BMainLoop appears to have stalled > 15 seconds without event signalled
src/clientdll/steamengine.cpp (2773) : Assertion Failed: CSteamEngine::BMainLoop appears to have stalled > 15 seconds without event signalled

Any ideas how I can troubleshoot this?

[SOLUTION] I had to run

pacman -Syu steam

which seems to have also installed a package called lsb-release

Im not sure why running a full system upgrade and also uninstalling and reinstalling steam didn't also grab this package when I did those, but there you go. I do a full system update by simply running yay as to my understanding that is the same as running yay -Syu but it first runs pacman -Syu. If anyone could provide some insight into why that might be I would appreciate that so I can learn from this experience. Thanks again everyone who tried to help!

Valve may be developing a "Steam Box" powered by SteamOS

The new kernel designed for "AMD Lilac" hints at possible new hardware

The device seems more of a competitor for Nvidia Shield than an upcoming Steam Deck 2.

Does anyone else notice how Steam doesn't update games automatically? You need to wait until you launch the game to update it. It also doesn't tell us when games need to be updated. Too often, I'm about to play with friends then find out I need to update the game.

What's also weird about a lot of these updates is that they don't even seem necessary. For example, Skyrim would run a 1GB+ update every time after I launched it, even though the game launched properly and I could play it just fine. This was every. Time.

There are some mad inefficiencies with how Steam handles updating games on Linux. I'm making this post hopefully to bring awareness to the issue and let others know who may be suffering from it that they are not alone.

As much benefit as Valve has provided for gaming on Linux, there's no denying that Steam is an albatross around the neck of the free software ecosystem.

Edit: Seems they’re doing this to prevent costs from arbitration.
