Yeah, I fully support FOSS, but I don't think we need to be against small devs getting paid for doing high quality work. There's no risk that sync will get too big and obtain consolidated power because the platform is distributed and you can easily switch clients. There will be lots of options for Lemmy, both FOSS and closed, but the important thing is that there are options.
