They're replacing gold with "Community Points", which are of course built on THE BLOCKCHAIN and are specific to the subreddit, but also if you get enough you can have more direct control over the subreddit or... something?
Mostly it sounds like a thinly veiled system designed to let people spend money to buy influence over a subreddit. But hey, it's crypto-based so that makes it cool, right?
Holy shit... If people can buy influence, then the political nutbags that already influence social media through bot accounts will now be able to directly use their money to further push their agendas unfettered... I am so glad I jumped ship when I did.
This is a joke even to crypto bros. The whole point of a blockchain is to resist censorship; slapping it on top of an already centralized server accomplishes nothing because it still has a weak point. Try making a revolutionary subreddit and see how long it lasts.
We need a decentralized system, but the servers don't need to sync up in perfect lockstep like the monetary system does. Anybody who understands these things should be using Lemmy!

Likewise. Pretty sure it’s heading exactly where we think it’s heading.
"All aboard! The express train to bot town is now loading!"

Finally deleted my account over this, haven't touched it otherwise in a while and have been using Lemmy instead, but this pushed me over the edge.
