TL;DR: They have a solution to the problem. A mix of vaccinating some of the trees(Because vaccines reduce yield) and spacing the trees apart.(So the bugs don't spread)

Only a guess, but maybe the stress of the introduced vaccine causes the plant to spend it's resources on an immune response?
