Honestly, as soon as there's a video sharing site and a few of my friends move, I'll be good to just abandon the web for Gemini.

Could you explain what Gemini is? I already know without looking that all my search attempts are going to be horoscope stuff, and I don't have the info to really narrow it down to anything.

It's a network protocol, like HTTP/S. It was inspired by the Gopher protocol from the '90s, but it supports basic text formatting (with Markdown-like syntax) and forces TLS encryption.

Here's the homepage: gemini.circumlunar.space

Here's a Gemini browser I like: gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange

Here's my personal Gemini capsule (the equivalent of a website): gemini://deafeningcreationearthquake.flounder.online

And here's an old Gopher hole, for comparison: gopher://gopher.linkerror.com:70/1/txt_index

Please note that you will need a Gemini browser to view these sites. I recommend Lagrange, which is cross-platform, FOSS, and supports Gopher, Gemini, Finger, and Spartan; but other software is available.

Sorry if I've made this sound confusing.

tl;dr: It's an alternative to HTTP.

While not especially tech-inclined, I think I'm up for handling confusing these days and I got people I could bother if I run into jargon truly impenetrable. I really appreciate all the links as well as the recommendation, thank you :)

Edit: I also vastly appreciate the time they've taken to make a jargon and non-jargon version of the FAQ. That has to be a labor of love and most things along these lines can feel daunting and inaccessible past a certain point simply because other tech bros understand it perfectly without the need for crayons
