One VPN I use has servers in most us states.

Auto connected to a mandatory ID state and a porn site demanded I take a picture of my id.

(Edit: I have it set to auto connect to fastest on start. I can change location and have 100 free servers to chose in the US. More in Japan and Netherlands. ProtonVPN)

I set up ProtonVPN on my wifi as a separate SSID. I had to select a specific server, so I picked one that's relatively close (for better latency) and doesn't have the same restrictions my state has. It's easy to switch, I just need to go tweak the settings in my router.

If my kids ever need to submit ID for something (e.g. social media), I'll hook them up w/ the VPN to bypass our draconian laws. The government has no place on the internet, and I will circumvent their stupid policies. If I don't trust my kids on the internet, I'm not going to look to the government to protect them, I'll just take away their internet privileges.

That's why you connect to Canada

[-] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

If I need a Canada connection for free I might switch over to warp or tor.

tor: "ah yes, this 6.4MB image will take 3 hours to load. good thing I like edging..."

Apparently you don't know that there are fast tor nodes and, gasp, speeds have improved over the 2 decades tor has been in existence.

People are stuck in 2014 thinking it is slower than molasses.

I've had this same argument before.

Pick a node. Run speed test. If too slow for your needs, pick another.

There are hundreds that are set up for high speed, high volume traffic.

20-80Mbps is plenty fast.

And here's your 6.4Mb image https://metrics.torproject.org/torperf.html?start=2024-10-06&end=2025-01-04&server=public&filesize=5mb

The true ‘90s dial-up experience: Watching your porn load one row of pixels at a time, only to find out it’s censored right as it gets to the good part.

Maybe I’ll just play a Flash game instead. Let me go make a sandwich while it loads.

Nooooooooooope

[-] yessikg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 days ago

Does it not let you chose a different state?

[-] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It doesn't specify the state. Only us server #. I guess I could look it up, but I just change servers.

[-] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

Sounds like a shit VPN to me. I can select a region (US East) or individual states with PIA and basically the same with Surfshark.

[-] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I can select one of 100 servers . I could check geoip. Or write a shell script to do that. Anyway...

It's also free.

It's also one of the best.

Proton.

I use the app. I could do all the wireguard fancy stuff, but I won't.

[-] theoretiker@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

At least the desktop app of proton shows you the state or even city where the server is located. For Germany I can even choose between Frankfurt and Berlin for example. I know that for us servers I was able to specifically choose New York.

Edit: In the android app you can go to countries then tap the three dots next to united states and select a state to connect to.

[-] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 days ago

The Linux app doesn't have that. Just server numbers (at least on the free tier)

I've been paying $30/year for like a decade now. Totally worth it.
