Why would devs remove something like this, at this time? Is it causing huge problems larger than the problems removing it would cause?

I'm loving the innovation in the fediverse, and all the people seeing issues, bringing them up, and people at least attempting to fix.
One of the biggest changes in 5g is the separation of the control and data planes, this means downloading pix of kitties doesn't interfere with phone control signals and gets everyone better bandwidth and responsiveness.
This also facilitates "edge computing", which is like a tiny clouds at the base of cell phone towers, this tech is used for super fast facial recognition and things like that where sending the data all the way to the cloud and back is a few milliseconds too slow.
The fediverse is the real internet, it's not a company providing a service. On the real internet, once something gets out there, there can never be a guarantee that it's taken back. Even on Reddit, once you post something, Reddit might fully delete it but someone out there may have copied it.
I sure hope there's a large group of servers that refuse to federate with servers run for profit. I didn't come to be a product and be manipulated with algorithms.

Capitalism has no interest in preservation except where it is profitable. Thinking about the long-term future, archaeologist's success and acting on it is not profitiable.

I think this is where "compartmentalization" comes in. Similar in concept to how you are forced to wall off sadness when a loved one dies so that you can continue to live your life, I think there are mentally competent right wingers, but they wall off the logic and reasoning so that it applies only to machines. They do this because if those ideas of logic and reason get beyond the wall/outside of the compartment, the meaning of their lives falls apart.
