Yeah but the spelling 'normally' would have been updated to match English pronunciation. That's what happens in most languages. As I understand there were two issues:

  • Some dictionary writers (ca. late 1400s IIRC) wanted spellings that seemed fancier like French and Latin, which is why e.g. the silent B in debt was added 'artificially'.
  • The printing press was invented right in the middle of the Great Vowel Shift so old spellings got "locked in" even though spoken English continued to change significantly for a long time afterward.

A surprising number of plastic/rubber components used in cheap electronics accessories will offgas. You notice an odd smell, that's literally petrochemicals entering your nostrils by the millions. Some of them can mimic biomolecules like hormones. I'm not saying they're necessarily all harmful but there needs to be a lot more research.

English isn't exactly innocent there. See knight, plumber, mnemonic, pterodactyl.

That's your issue? Not adjective declination?

I'm nearly at the end of Duolingo's German content and spelling has mostly been quite easy (as a native English speaker). You want a spelling challenge, try French.

The Dems kept making big proclamations about how the economy has rebounded under the Biden administration. But no one except the wealthy has benefited from that. It felt genuinely insulting every single time. Average folks in the US keep seeing bills, grocery prices, subscription services, and especially housing costs rise steadily. People are so worried about paying for these core things.

But the party never listened to Bernie and just kept saying "look, we fixed it" when they clearly didn't, and I believe that drove away voters.

In case anyone wants the answer, it's late December 1938, when two physicists went for a walk in the snow near Stockholm to discuss findings a colleague sent via letter.

I grew up with classmates named Autumn, April, and December (she went by DeeDee). I had a co-worker named June. I've known of kids named Summer, January, Augustus, and September. But none of them picked these names; it was the parents who identified them as months or seasons!

(And yes obviously the Fox story is beyond stupid)

That's the thing. You can launch Steam and have it just get the hell out of your way, and go enjoy your games. You don't really have to interact with any of the features on a regular basis. For many players, that's perfect.

But it's actually been incredibly innovative. Proton has made Linux gaming a reality when it previously seemed impossible. Remote Play Together is basically wizardry. Steam Input is fucking brilliant and lightyears beyond other control customizations. These things are available to every Steam user gratis if you want them.

What non-game paid apps do you use that are worthwhile and still relevant in 2023?

For context, I have a decent amount of Google Play credit thanks to Opinion Rewards and a gift card. I'm not looking to start a book or movie collection there, nor sign up for subscription services. But I'm happy to buy the paid/pro version of useful apps.

I'm excluding games just because that's a whole topic on its own.

Here are some one-time paid apps I've been happy with:
