There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

In Venezuela the Christmas dish consists of Hallacas (like tamales but more elaborate); Ensalada de Gallina (with potatoes, carrots and diced apples with mayonnaise); Pernil de Cerdo and Pan de Jamón.

Venezuelan dish with Hallacas, Ham Bread, Pig Leg and Chicken Salad

The hallaca is the main part, and as such the tastiest and my favorite, both to eat it and to make it, which is not at all easy since it requires the help of the whole family.

I bought a bunch of eneloop pro, but using them in connected thermostats is always displaying "low battery" even after just fully charged. This is when I discovered that they are actually 1.2V

It really came as a surprise, is there a catch? Are they only good for low power stuff like remote controls?

Edit: it seems they do exist in lithium. Question remains why are the NiMH only 1.2v and why are they the most widespread?

Hello there, I am looking for a good-quality A4 leather book cover for my journal and would love some recommendations. Ideally, I would like something durable and suitable for daily use. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them!

Thought about it, snce it's near New Year's.

In my opinion, exercising/training/stretching atleast once a week would be a good thing for most people.

Seems like a terrible idea to me.

You make one mistake one time and bingo, you cost yourself a few grand to have it sanded, leveled, varnished, and polished.

Buying one through Apple online at the moment, but it’s roughly $1300 with taxes. So I have myself a little nervous at the cost. Thanks in advance for answering. 👍

At 40, I am convinced that we cosplay as adult characters to hide our inner child, mostly from ourselves. Some seem to allow the stresses of life and responsibilities to make the mask indistinguishable, but I doubt any truly make it real. Do you wear the mask of age over the eyes of your inner child? Does age hold a meaningful value to you beyond the comradery of shared experience?

Alcohol.

Lots and lots of people lean heavily on it and think that alcohol is the spice of their life. When, it contributes to so many problems than it's so-called benefits. We tried, in America anyways, to outright ban alcohol. Problem was that the person who wanted it banned, was too extremist.

Like he didn't think it all through and think just going for the jugular of the problem is what will work. When, it didn't and just made people work around it until eventually the ban was dismantled.

So, since then, we've been putting up with drunk drivers, drunk disputes, drunk abusers and other issues. I still wish we could just slam our hands down at the desk and demand we sit to discuss in how to properly deal with this issue than people proclaiming that it's not a problem.

Retail, easy. Like, I enjoy what I do for my job but the people that my store attracts, make it cumbersome. People coming to me all the time with phones in my face of listings to other stores thinking we have them, people impatient, people thinking we have everything and people being deliberately vague but getting pissed when you ask them what they mean.

I would pay for a retro gaming subscription that would give me access to over 1,000 games for $20 a month. Sega Genesis, Atari, Nintendo, Neo-Geo and so much more.

There was a similar incident in Colorado in 2019/2020.

Everyone seems shocked at this. I personally felt a lot less shocked and more like I'd been waiting for this shoe to drop for 20 years. I've been waiting for people to notice the tools of the Iraq War being turned against American citizens for over a decade now.

I spent the better part of 2001 and on arguing against the PATRIOT Act and its codification of terrorism as a crime. Lots of people were against it (we were in the minority, obviously), pointing out how the PATRIOT Act would consider the Founding Fathers terrorists. They committed violence to achieve political ends.

Did everyone just forget that at one point there was actually a nascent conversation on why this was a bad idea, especially considering people warning that they would soon use these laws against their own citizens?

Why did these conversations stop? More importantly, now that Mangione is being charged with terrorism, why aren't the conversations beginning anew?

Short disclosure, I work as a Software Developer in the US, and often have to keep my negative opinions about the tech industry to myself. I often post podcasts and articles critical of the tech industry here in order to vent and, in a way, commiserate over the current state of tech and its negative effects on our environment and the Global/American sociopolitical landscape.

I'm generally reluctant to express these opinions IRL as I'm afraid of burning certain bridges in the tech industry that could one day lead to further employment opportunities. I also don't want to get into these kinds of discussions except with my closest friends and family, as I could foresee them getting quite heated and lengthy with certain people in my social circles.

Some of these negative opinions include:

  • I think that the industries based around cryptocurrencies and other blockchain technologies have always been, and have repeatedly proven themselves to be, nothing more or less than scams run and perpetuated by scam artists.
  • I think that the AI industry is particularly harmful to writers, journalists, actors, artists, and others. This is not because AI produces better pieces of work, but rather due to misanthropic viewpoints of particularly toxic and powerful individuals at the top of the tech industry hierarchy pushing AI as the next big thing due to their general misunderstanding or outright dislike of the general public.
  • I think that capitalism will ultimately doom the tech industry as it reinforces poor system design that deemphasizes maintenance and maintainability in preference of a move fast and break things mentality that still pervades many parts of tech.
  • I think we've squeezed as much capital out of advertising as is possible without completely alienating the modern user, and we risk creating strong anti tech sentiments among the general population if we don't figure out a less intrusive way of monetizing software.

You can agree or disagree with me, but in this thread I'd prefer not to get into arguments over the particular details of why any one of our opinions are wrong or right. Rather, I'd hope you could list what opinions on the tech industry you hold that you feel comfortable expressing here, but are, for whatever reason, reluctant to express in public or at work. I'd also welcome an elaboration of said reason, should you feel comfortable to give it.

I doubt we can completely avoid disagreements, but I'll humbly ask that we all attempt to keep this as civil as possible. Thanks in advance for all thoughtful responses.

A family member is moving out of country and convinced the best way to keep in touch is with WhatsApp. I really don't want to install any Meta shit on my phone.

Any recommendation for a FOSS or other alternative from a company that's less of an ethical dumpster fire?
