The one I own, people get upset when I take theirs.

I'm of mixed opinions on it generally but like the web-apps where you go to a site and then 'install' it. My mixed thoughts are because it seems to only work in chromium browsers rather than Firefox, but it's a nice way to get a custom configured app on the spot.

About 700 watts, it makes for a decent space heater in the winter.

Vehicle and property insurances are a public good safety measure. If you go and cause serious injury to someone with your vehicle or in your home they have every right to expect to be made whole again. Without that insurance you would personally be liable for those debts. Unless you're willing to say that those kind of debts are not dischargeable in bankruptcy then insurance to cover them is essential for anyone who doesn't have a few hundred thousand laying around.

Workers comp is useful much the same way, unless you want that dim employee who cuts their hand off to be the death of your business.

FDIC helps ensure that some fool tanking every asset the bank has won't leave the depositors holding the bag.

Health insurance is for the vast majority of people required in some form under the rules of the ACA.

Insurance in the most basic sense is a pooling or risk. A universal single payer healthcare system is simply a pool that everyone is a part of by default. There's a lot to be said for having a single entity to contact for payments, but you can be sure that even if we fully did away with the insurance system as it is today that there's not going to be a 'free MRI Wednesday' in exchange for it. Someone will always be looking to keep a check on who spends howuch on what.

For me a lot of it is in trying to maximize efficiencies. Setting up task duties and resources where you have plenty enough but not overloading your storage. Defensive position designs to counter any possible situation. Layouts to the base to allow free movement.

Lot of others try for specific artistic ideas or scenario goals, but I'm something of engineer minded player.

Rimworld, way too much Rimworld. A big part of it is that I'll often have it one a second computer during the workday just on pause to pop in during downtime but I guess that still counts as playtime just being loaded.

Like others said, self signed or internal only domains work. Really though for the minimal cost of generally less than $20/year you can make it a lot easier by just buying a domain.

From a pure security stance it could be argued that a personally owned CA is more secure than any public one since it's possible for others to create a trusted cert with a public entity. Cloudflare ends up doing that for any domains you register with them, but that's really only an issue for things facing the web and using self signed certs will typically cause problems for any pre-compiled client apps you might use.

Hey all,

So I'm looking to take an active step here to understand better some things that my straight/white/cis/middle-aged male brain has had a tough time wrapping itself around, particularly in the gender identity front.

I'm working from the understanding of physical sex as the bio-bits and the expressed identity as being separate things, so that part is easy enough.

What's confusing to me though is like this. If we take gender as being an expression of your persona, a set of traits that define one as male, female, or some combination of both then what function does a title/pronoun serve? To assume that some things are masculine or feminine traits seems to put unneeded rigidity to things.

We've had men or women who enjoy things traditionally associated with the other gender for as long as there have been people I expect. If that's the case then what purpose does the need for a gender title serve?

I'll admit personally questioning some things like fairness in cis/trans integrated sports, but that's outside what I'm asking here. Some things like bathroom laws are just society needing to get over itself in thinking our personal parts are all that special.

Certainly not trying to stir up any fights, just trying to get some input from people that have a different life experience than myself. Is it really as simple as a preferred title?

Edit: Just wanted to take a second to thank all the people here who took the time to write some truly extensive thoughts and explanations, even getting into some full on citation-laden studies into neurology that'll give me plenty to digest. You all have shown a great deal of patience with me updating some thinking from the bio/social teachings of 20+ years back. 🙂
