In RetroArch you can go to core settings I believe and check the bios files. It'll give a checkmark if you have it and give the MD5 hash

Have you also tried using Bleachbit to free up storage space?

I did. Not nearly enough to manage my own router unfortunately

Following a guide on how to make something is different than understanding what you're doing. By all means go for it. I think if you want to enjoy self hosting, skip to that part and come back to creating a router in the future.

Trying to create a router yourself is complicated. I knew nothing about it and installed OpenWRT onto a Netgear router and was unprepared. I ended up effectively taking a YouTube crash course trying to understand so many new networking terms and more. I got it working but any small tweaks could cause issues as I didn't fully understand what I was doing. I bought a GL.iNet Flint 2 and have been super happy with it. Save yourself a headache, get a good router like that and start having fun running things on a RPi.

Is there a Flatpak?

95℅ of the time my Patreon feeds fail to load. This isn't your experience?

Not really anymore. People pay subscription fees for all types of software and most collect and sell your data. FOSS software is free and doesn't spy on you most of the time. The tables have turned

That worked! Thanks a bunch!

Okay so they are core related. I'll have to take a look at which core I'm using and maybe change it up. Thank you!

I really dislike save states as it takes away from how the game is designed to be played and removes the nostalgia of booting a system everytime I want to play. I also setup a handheld for a friend's kids and couldn't change it which I felt was really taking away the experience for them

I have the Miyoo Mini+. I originally used MinUI and it saved games like a normal GBA and loaded the game to the menu everytime I started it, again like a standard GBA worked. I switched to OnionOS to have a nicer interface with boxart and now it only uses save states and auto starts from said state when opening a game. Not an authentic experience.

I have learned there's a difference between game saves and save states but don't know how to switch my handheld to use only game saves. Is it based on the core used maybe? Can anyone help me out?

The colorization hack looks really fun to try, thank you.

I enjoy Smash Remix for the N64 Super Smash Bros. It's a vanilla+ experience

Ultra Violet looks awesome! Thanks for the suggestion

I'm seeing family over the holidays and they really enjoy comic book stuff and video games. I don't know much about comics and am looking for suggestions on classic comic book based games I can load on my RPi and bring over to play. All I'm aware of are some of the Marvel vs Capcom fighting games but maybe there are others. Any ideas?

I'm trying to better understand how app-to-app communication works within the owner profile alone. I read that apps need mutual consent if they wish to talk with one another, otherwise all apps are isolated from one another.

If that's true, how do I see and verify what consent has been given to an app?

There's obviously "Permissions" but to my knowledge that only gives an app access to sms, photos, etc., not letting one app talk to another. Storage scope is another thing I'm aware of which I can utilize.

I ask this because I need to install a standard predatory work app that has various accesses including location. I tried installing it in another profile and was going to spoof my location but developer options mock location doesn't carry over to the other profiles. So I need to install the app on my owner profile but want to be certain it won't be trying to harvest data from other apps or the system.

Favorite ROM Hacks? (lemmy.today)
submitted 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) by sic_semper_tyrannis@lemmy.today to c/retrogaming@lemmy.world

What are peoples favorite ROM Hacks? I personally like vanilla+ experiences but just want to hear what other people appreciate and why.

I'm thinking of Smash Remix for Super Smash Bros. It adds tons of content but keeps the game feeling original.

Also thinking of Maternalbound Redux, an improvement for the USA version of Earthbound

Pacman Championship Edition demake for NES

Does anyone know how to hide the game regions, revisions, disc numbers, etc. through the menu settings? I cannot find a setting for it and prefer not to rename all my ROMs and box art.

Edit: I still don't know if there is a way within the menu to accomplish this like can be done in standard RetroArch.

However, here is how I accomplished it. I already had my box art so I don't know if that has to be gotten first. Put the microSD card in your computer, go to the folder that holds the ROMS for each particular system you have games in, open the .XML file in a text editor, edit the name of each game in the category to what you want it to say, save the file and that's it. Your box art will not need editing

Hey everyone, I'm looking for critiques on my games list here. I've been casually enjoying retro gaming for the past year and my friend wants his kids to play some. He has two boys a few years apart but no older than 8 I think. I'm planning to surprise him with a POWkiddy RGB10X pre-configured with some games I think young kids would enjoy. This is where I need some help finalizing the list. I'm at a little over 30 games which I think is maybe too many but I want them to have a wide variety of genres and franchises to enjoy. What might you change or suggest?

  • Donkey Kong (NES or GBA)
  • Ridge Racer Type 4 (PS1)
  • Diddy Kong Racing (N64)
  • Super Mario 64 (N64)
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 (SNES)
  • Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
  • Pokémon Emerald (GBA)
  • Pokémon Crystal (GBC)
  • Pokémom Leaf Green (GBA)
  • Pokémon Pinball (GBA)
  • Super Smash Bros. (N64)
  • Metal Slug X (PS1)
  • Contra: Hard Corps (Genesis)
  • Super Metroid (SNES)
  • Banjo-Kazooie (N64)
  • Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
  • SoulCalibur (DC)
  • Crash Bandicoot: Warped (PS1)
  • Spyro 1 (PS1)
  • Rayman (PS1)
  • Wipeout 3 Special Edition (PS1)
  • ACE Combat 3 (PS1)
  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (PS1)
  • Digimon World (PS1)
  • Sonic 3&K (DC)
  • Kirby & the Amazing Mirror (GBA)
  • Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords (GBA)
  • 1943 (NES)
  • Earthbound Patched (SNES)
  • Chrono Trigger (SNES)
  • TMNT: Turtles in Time (SNES)
  • Tetris (NES)
  • Pacman CE demake (NES)

PS.

  • He specifically mentioned Donkey Kong, though not any game specifically, as well as he personally enjoyed OddWorld as a kid so I threw that in there.
  • Maybe remove Contra and leave only Metal Slug?

With MinUI I save the game how the game intends me to, then turn off my device, play another time and the game starts from the opening sequences, I select my save and start playing. Just like how an old GBA would work.

With OnionOS, I can save anytime and after starting a new session it picks up like if I had paused the game and then just started playing again. I have to use the RetroArch menu to make the game boot through the opening sequences and then the proper game saving won't resume as intended.

I always thought this was strange of OnionOS and it seems like other custom OS do the same thing. It takes away from the classic way an old game is played when I can save anytime and it removes the nostalgia of booting up a GBA or whatever everytime I want to play.

Anyways, does anyone know how ArkOS handles saves? I'd like to purchase a device that supports it, but only if it can behave like MinUI.

Privacy.com Updates (lemmy.today)

They're making changes to where if you have your transactions set to private it will only say "PWP*Privacy.com" on your bank statements. Say goodbye to "NSA Giftshop". Sad day

I just changed from MinUI to OnionOS on my Miyoo Mini+ to try more forms of emulation such as Arcade. I specifically want to play Bosconian. I got it running via the core "MAME 2003-Plus" using two different ROMsets, "bosco" and "boscomd" from the Archive.org "MAME 2003-Plus Reference Full Non-Merged ROMsets" page.

However, I'm having the same issue with both being "Warning: audo sample(s) not found".

Did I happen to pick two bad ROMsets or is there some larger issue I'm having? Is this a common issue that people know how to fix?

USA Retailer? (lemmy.today)

Is there a reputable retailer of retro handhelds that's in the USA? I would like to support local USA businesses and have quicker shipping.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a camera still being produced similar to the Canon G1X MkIII. I've been using a 5D MkIII for years but want something smaller for backpacking that still packs a great quality sensor, glass, and full featured manual mode with RAW format. It doesn't have to be Canon either. Thanks

Edit: probably an APS-C size sensor or larger
