What design language/guideline is better: Google's Material Design, or Microsoft's Fluent Design?

(not asking for advice, just a thought that popped into my head)

I understand that medical injuries are a factor in something like a missing caution sign, but how is it that someone can sue and win in a case of common sense when a company has no sign? For example, many companies use signs so they are not liable for theft at say a public laundromat but some don't have this. How do they avoid a lawsuit when they don't have a sign even though it is common sense? What type of law protects a customer when a business lacks a sign and allows them to win against a business owner?

I think your average geek used to be like, somewhat academic and erudite and into arcane knowledge and had some level of good faith of wanting to engage in discussion

Now it's all frauds and absolutely braindead elon stans and crypto dipshits and conservative freaks and people who enjoy and defend watching big tech destroy everything.

It's open source so it can be implemented in other platforms like on Linux/BSD desktop environments, jailbreaks on iOS, etc.

I don't mean Ambidextrous!

Yesterday I tried cutting a vegetable with the knife in my non-dominant hand and it was a weird and uncomfortable thing. I wonder if there are people who have that distinct discomfort of using your "bad" hand, but on both hands?

I don't think it would fall under ambidexterity, because that kinda implies someone is comfortable with either hand, but could someone be uncomfortable with both?

Just morbid questions. I mean I'm not some CEO, just an averge person. Just wondered how seriously is my death even gonna be investigated. (Or is nobody even gonna care, like how my parents probably won't even care if I died)

These are the wallpapers that come bundled with Ubuntu releases. I'm looking for all ones that have been bundled since Ubuntu 9.10 from October 2009, until now.

And if I'm wrong and everyone is actually doing it, how is it sustainable in the long run? I mean, we can't all be millionaires.

Edit: Changed "the government" to "governments"

I mean, people say use end to end encryption, VPN, Tor, Open Source Operating System, but I think one thing missed is the hardware is not really open source, and theres no practical open source alternative for hardware. There's Intel ME, AMD PSP, so there's probably one in phones. How can people be so confident these encryption is gonna stop intelligence agencies?

And wouldn't this tip off the cops or something. Kind of like the Wisconsion shooter posted? Where she was going to carry out an attack?

I believe this is something only each of us can answer, because where each person draws the line is always going to be different, or am I wrong?

I don’t know if I’m being reasonable with my red lines:

My parents are conservative Mexican. I was raised with Christian dogmas and clear social roles (men don’t cook or do the laundry, only women do). To my parents and people like them, family, or what they think of as family, comes always first: It is imperative we all meet several times a year, even if you don’t want to, because that’s what we’re supposed to do. I’m expected to attend, to pretend I like my extended family (people I have nothing in common with), to “do it for them” (for my parents, in the past this form of emotional manipulation worked, since 4 months it doesn’t anymore). I hated that as a child and if I ever have children I won’t put them to such BS.

My grandfather was mentally ill and insulted me, my siblings and my mother for most of my childhood until he died, while my father enabled that pos. In Mexico it is expected that families take care of such issues within the family, because asking for help elsewhere means the family loses face. I’ve already told my parents that if they ever become psychologically unstable and start insulting and ranting no stop, I’m not going to take care of them, I’m calling APS. I don’t know if they registered it when I said it.

Maybe because I was raised in such a strict, self censoring and conformist family I now want to defend my independence at any cost. Cue meeting people halfway or being a doormat.

If a woman I’m dating asks me to do “something for her”, my first instinct will be to run no looking back and ghost. If I stay trying to convince her that’s not a good idea explaining why, that means in my book she already manipulated me into listening to her and that she can keep manipulating me. I don’t know if this is self sabotage, but I see it as self defense.

If a woman I’m dating asks me about my parents and the issue of providing for elderly parents is discussed, it wouldn’t make any sense to sugarcoat it, I’d say what I just wrote here. If she accuses me of being a psychopath and starts with “they’re your parents”, as if that was a reason good enough to forgive everything in the past, I’d run and ghost. I don’t know if you see this as self sabotage, but I see it as self defense.

There are other examples I’ve heard at the workplace over couple problems that to me are simply ludicrous and would make me want to run away:

he wanted Chinese, she wanted Mexican and couldn’t agree what restaurant to call. My solution would be to order what I want, telling my partner to order what she wants. Why must we order from the same restaurant? Why so much drama over something so insignificant? Or she can order what she wants and I can cook.

She made weekend plans without telling him beforehand, he wanted to rest, grab a beer, go fishing and do nothing else. She wanted to have lunch with another couple (double date), he said no, because he wanted a quiet weekend and suggested she goes alone with the couple. She started yelling about not doing things together.

But why must couples do everything together? Why is doing things separately not a good idea? He gets his peace and she gets to socialize.

If meeting somebody halfway means doing something I don’t want to do, I don’t want a relationship with this person.

If a person I’m dating feels entitled to try to change me, I don’t see how a relationship would work. Am I a narcissist?

I'm normally pretty ok at naming things in code, but I'm struggling here and would love some new ideas.

I'm building part of a game for the dialog with NPCs. It functions just like Fallout:

  • Player initiates dialog with NPC.
  • NPC says a few sentences.
  • Player gets a list of replies and can pick one.
  • Depending what the player picks, either the conversation will end, or the NPC will say some new stuff and start this over.

Here's the names of objects that I have so far that I'm not exactly in love with. I'd love suggestions on any of these.

  1. Dialog: This is a "container" object. Clicking on an NPC will start the Dialog. This contains many Chats.
  2. Chat: This is the name I dislike most. A Chat contains the text the NPC will say, and a list of ChatReply objects.
  3. ChatReply: This contains the text of the reply (what the player is saying back to the NPC), as well as a pointer to either a new Chat, or to end the Dialog.

Any suggestions?

Update: From the replies, I think I like Dialog / Prompt / Reply.

Hello! So two things:

  1. I would like to have a discussion about the UHC CEO killing and if it is at all any different than the ~45 murders a day in the USA...(other than the obvious "he was rich" one). -Typical Christmas family get together brought this up as a topic and was curious about the different perspectives. Argument made by others was "this sets a bad precedent", and the response was "how is this any different than someone getting murdered for literally any reason". Hate, lust, money, your car..whatever the motivation, how is this any different?

  2. Is there a better location to post said discussion topic?

I mostly lurk Lemmy, so not really sure how to find the correct communities for said topic.

Thanks!

I'm referring to the sh.itjustworks instance. Which one would be it? Because I'm kind of confused..

I mean, I as an average person thought about this tactic, I'm sure some project 2025 people also though about it. I mean, denaturalization have to go through courts, destroying naturalization records could just be an executive order. I mean, they don't even need to destroy it, just order the records to be "relocated for security purposes" then "oopsie, they got caught on fire during transport". Once thats done, any of the citizens copies would get dismissed as fake and mass deportations could proceed...

I hope I'm just being a "doomer", and pray it doesn't happen.

Edit: I already have photos of my certificate of citizenship, but still... if they just start burning records, they can just dismiss my copy as fake. 😖

I have this cheap binder clip from Amazon, which wasn't actually cheap imo, but whatever. I like the cat. I'd like to keep using it, but the "brass" paint is rubbing off, and it smells like metal. I think it reacts with the oils in my hands or something. I've only been using it for a few weeks.

Is there something I can do to keep it looking nice and perhaps prevent it from wearing down so quickly?

I don't know if this is an appropriate question for this community, so mods, remove if needed.

The idea would be to fully insert the egg inside my bum to massage my prostate. Most of the eggs I'm considering have a cord at one end so you can slide it out when you're done. There are however things to consider:

Vibrating eggs are made of several parts, the cord usually attached to a piece of plastic attached to the main body of the toy, usually made of silicone. I fear the toy will break inside of me. OTOH I can relax my sphincter before taking the toy off.

Some other eggs can be used with 2 aaa batteries, main body also made of silicone. However, the models I found online don't seem to have a screw top. I don't see how the egg won't leave the cap inside of me.

The bigger and larger the better? Vibrating eggs I'm considering are on the 1" - 1.25" diameter range and 2.75" length range. Some other prostate massagers are much smaller, but I don't think they would make me feel anything.

There are also usb rechargeable eggs. Some of these have the charging port on the main body, meaning it goes inside of you when you use it. How can this be hygienic? I don't see how this can be easy to clean and last long (humidity and electricity don't combine well).

There are also cable connected eggs where you put the aaa batteries in the remote. After using it, I'd have to pull the cable when I'm done. Is this safe? I don't see how this item can last long if I have to pull the power cord each time I use it.

the more expensive the better? price ranges from $8 (power corded eggs where you provide the aaa batteries) to $45 (usb rechargeable egg with charging port at the end that won't go inside of you).
