There is some lemmy.world sure but also:

  • lemmy.ml
  • sh.itjust.works
  • programming.dev
  • lemmy.dbzer0.com
  • programming.dev
  • lemm.ee
  • lemmy.kde.social

If a topic suits the philosophy of its lemmy instance its more likely to attract a healthy population. Then when I'm looking for a community on a topic it doesn't really matter which instance that community is on.

problem is I have no idea which of these communities is "best"

Its a bit basic but so far I've just gone with the largest population. Usually I'm just after the most activity and that generally scales with population. It keeps things relatively simple.

My time sheet totals 37.5 hours of work per week and I can take take a lunch break of 30 to 60 minutes. The break is unpaid and a minimum break of 30 minutes is required after 5 straight hours of work so the lunch break is mandatory.

Typically this works out to 7.5 hours work with a 30 minutes break totalling 8 hours on site. Smaller breaks are untimed so if we need to stretch our legs or get some fresh air no one is watching the clock. We also have a pretty good culture of not interrupting people's lunch with work issues so that does feel like an actual break.

The Australian Government has announced changes to the way video games are classified in Australia. Starting from September 22nd, 2024, two new rules will apply to games that include “in-game purchases with an element of chance,” such as loot boxes [now M], and games that feature “simulated gambling,” like casino games [now R18+].

workers who have lost their jobs should "drive an Uber" or "go to the beach for a year" until employment settles.

The second part has real "let them eat cake vibes"!

Fun fact: The ecosystems of the Amazon Basin rely on around 27.7 million tons of Saharan Dust each year to replace the phosphorus that is washed away by the rains. Without this constant input the local soils would have been stripped of needed nutrients and would be unable to support the plants that currently thrive there.

As physical tech:

  • we have lever door handles at work and wheel and axle door knobs at home.

As digital tech:

  • Comma Separated Values as a notation predates computers. Then CSV has been used as a computer file format at least since one of the Fortran variants added support in 1972.

  • The implementation has changed as filesystems evolve but the basic directory/file model of data storage and the associated tools ls/dir, cd, rm/del have been around a while. ls has been known by that name since Multics in 1969, but can trace its lineage back to listfon CTSS in 1961.

Anything that predates copy/paste is doing alright.

I might be missing the point but does it matter if it breaks down into micro plastics over 3 years or 13?

If single use plastics are destined to become micro plastics does the time scale matter?

I guess acknowledging the problem is the first step.

The op link hit a paywall for me, this one is working:

https://web.archive.org/web/20240401221646/https://www.wired.com/story/google-chrome-incognito-mode-data-deletion-settlement/

the company will now pay “zero” dollars as part of the settlement after earlier facing a $5 billion penalty.

I guess they would call that a win
