I definitely plan on playing Black Mesa on PC at some point. I played Half Life on PS2 this time. I wanted something a little closer to the original state the game released in but I don’t have a retro PC. But I’m ready to enjoy it more modernly

I actually like the platforming in the game but the low gravity in Xen does make it annoying. Missed so many jumps, definitely abused quick save

Do I take the job? This weird guy keeps asking me to choose!

I have no idea about the game and whether it actually contains gambling content or is just being auto flagged due to the title but this kind of crap is why I hate big tech and is why I hope we eventually have a future where decentralized services rule over big tech.

API debacle. Went from Apollo for Reddit to Voyager for Lemmy

I don’t know if it’s the best one (that’s probably Mario Kart 8 although I don’t care for it), but it’s the most fun for me.

The items and characters make for fun strategy in choosing a team a kart. It may not be super balanced but it’s fun and not as unbalanced as Mario Kart Wii imo. One of my bucket list items is to play a 8/16 player race on 8 GCNs using the LAN adapter

I don’t think the fediverse needs a fancy explanation that is non-boring. Either you care about federation and the decentralized control of the fediverse and it makes sense to you. Or you don’t care and those features then become roadblocks to getting on boarded.

[-] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

The fediverse isn’t that complicated, if you really care about ownership and control and the portability of data when it comes to using a social network.

The fediverse is just complicated enough that it is a big enough barrier to keep people that don’t care about those things from getting on boarded usually. There isn’t really a good way to make those factors less complicated with out compromising them for the whole reason people currently prefer the fediverse.

However there are some other pain points that could be addressed that I think will make things simpler for those who aren’t privacy/tech/decentralization focused.

Starter packs for one. Allow instance hosts to maintain starter packs for people to follow if they choose during the onboarding process. A lot of people complain about having empty or inactive feeds. Starter packs solve that easily. Especially if there is a repo for communities to submit their own starter packs as well.

Better discoverability. I know some people don’t want search to improve but it’s pretty hard to find people through actual Mastodon search. I dont know if it’s just do to a lack of users and content or if that’s something that truly needs improving. But basically my follows are usually found off platform and then manually followed or I follow someone I discover via a hashtag.

Great just like games like Fortnite and Call of Dity Mobile have bots with real usernames and profiles to fill lobbies, now literally everyone online could be a bot with a fake profile.

I’m prepared to just be gaslit for the rest of my life from now on

I don’t think we are going to convince each other, I am glad that you find value in being able to sell skins that you don’t want on the marketplace for credit. That is why the system was designed, not for it to be abused by others for gambling.

I more-so have problems with how the system is rife for abuse, and I think that it should be up for debate whether valve should have to do anything about it.

I actually don’t think they should have too, I think more responsibility should be on the individual and responsibility on the parents for minors.

I do think that we should expect easier parental controls with more granular settings to be able to allow parents to protect their kids from risky trades rather than basically just enable or disable the entire social features.

You acquire items of arbitrary values for real life money by random chance and call the other guy stupid or dishonest for considering it gambling?

[-] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I like mastodon a lot. I have basically found my hashtags, people and news sources to follow and so my feed is always filled with content to read. Engagement is fairly good on my instance, at least with popular topics.

But I only have 20 followers in 18 months of being on it so if that kind of thing is important to you then it can be something of a negative. Harder to build an audience without an algorithmic recommendation feature feeding your posts to strangers. I find that to be a positive though.

This may be somewhat obvious advice but it makes a huge difference. If your iPhone says the battery is degraded (under 80% battery health) then take it to a repair center and replace the battery. Even if your phone says it’s at “Peak Performance” despite the battery health.

For context, my iPhone 13 mini (purchased at launch in 2021) was at 74% battery health and the battery menu said it was degraded and to seek service despite also saying “Peak Performance Capability”. I could tell because my phone would become hotter than the surface of the sun if I used it for more than 10 minutes. It would also become so slow if trying to use the internet as it struggled to load all the JavaScript and ads and such when loading websites.

I decided to get the battery replaced at the Apple Store (and they decided to replace the screen as well for no additional charge) for a total of $89 before tax. It runs like it is brand new and I could totally see me getting another 3 years out of it.

If anyone is considering buying a new device or just repairing their existing device, I can’t recommend replacing the battery enough. It really made an impact in my experience

Afterplay.io now has retroachievements support!

Afterplay.io is a web-based retro gaming emulator with support for SNES, GB, GBC and GBA (Premium includes support for even more consoles including N64, PS1, and DS).

The latest update just added retroacheivements support. As far as I know, it’s the only emulator that supports them on iOS that doesn’t require sideloading.

I’m looking for a recommendation for making gifs on iOS. Preferably one that lets you add text and with the option to remove the watermark with a one time purchase instead of a subscription.

Does this community have any advice? I tried a bunch on the App Store but there’s literally dozens and most of them either don’t let you add text or have like a $20 a minute subscription or obnoxious ads with no option to remove

I know that the source is more focused on retro gaming as a topic but the topic of this post is Google and its pagerank algorithm which is more appropriate for this community.

We’ve all noticed the enshittification of Google Search over the last few months, but it’s still hard to hear how it is affecting content creators and putting them out of business so we can see 20 AI generated spam pages about whatever our query is.

I conquered Koholint island finally! I really enjoyed my time playing Link’s Awakening. I can’t believe they fit a whole Legend of Zelda game on Gameboy! I really enjoyed it

I ended up getting stuck trying to get the bird key. I could not figure out how to get the flying rooster. I tried bombing the weather cock, lifting the weather cock, pulling, using the hook shot, using the magic rod, digging every tile in mabe village, getting the boomerang, giving back the boomerang, tried every key item I could think of. I ended up beating level 8 before level 7. I even made this map of the entire game in google sheets to try to figure it out.

Tap for spoilerTurns out you can just push the statue

Oh well, I don’t count it as time waste. If anything else it was a great excuse to keep playing. I’ve never played a 3D Zelda before so I am looking forward to OoT

The app is available in the US now. It links to appropriate Apple News articles, Streaming services, has scoreboards and more.

Makes me curious if we see Apple lean more into live sports for their Apple TV+ packages, especially with the NBA contract coming up to match their current MLS and MLB offerings

As a big Zelda hater as a kid, I skipped the series completely. I’ve been going through to experience them all in order now. I really enjoyed the first two games of the series so I expected to like this one too. What I didn’t expect is was that it really is one of the best games on the Super Nintendo if not one of the best games of all-time.

We recently subscribed to AppleTV+ (you get a pretty decent trial from just download the app on a playstation by the way). And are looking for exclusives to watch on the service. Of course everyone recommends Ted Lasso and we have started that. My wife, has already watched through "The Morning Show" and liked it.

Especially looking for good movie suggestions as those don't require as much of a time investment for me.

What does everyone on Lemmy watch on the service?

I’m really intrigued by the video, and the concept but why? 10 years ago I would have loved it, but this guy is wayyyyyy too long.

While I’m dubious of the claim due to the robust permissions management in the latest versions of iOS and Android, it is interesting that a company has come out and said they are doing what everyone is thinking.

And yes they are a subsidiary of the parent of Cox Communications, the ISP, so I would be switching to a competitor ASAP if I had their services

[Zelda II]I did it! (lemmy.world)

I’ve been determined to finally beat Zelda II and determine that I would do it without save states and without a guide.

I know Zelda II is considered a black sheep somewhat but I really think in some ways it’s more fun than the original although I’d still pick Zelda 1 over II.
