Dear google,

My pop-up blocker says fuck You and my download app says give me your fuckin videos.

Have a nice day.

What a terrible strategy...

Hey you should consider not blocking ads and joining YouTube Premium! By the way we just increased the price of the service you currently virtually have for free.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago

More like "now that we've taken care of the competition, we're free to jack up the prices! It's The American Way!"

[-] moody@lemmings.world 6 points 1 year ago

What competition? There never was any competition for Youtube.

[-] Stingray@reddthat.com 10 points 1 year ago

Competition for YouTube Premium (ad blockers).

[-] MrOxiMoron@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Yeah, the reason I block the ads and don't buy premium is because the price is too high.

Corporate greed is the reason I run my own pirate media server with 32tb of storage and only access youtube through revanced.

I used to quite happily pay for Netflix and YouTube Premium. Now that money goes to a domain registrar and usenet provider. Fuck em.

[-] omgarm@feddit.nl 35 points 1 year ago

They got rid of premium lite :( I just want no ads, I don't care about youtube music or any other features.

YouTube can get fucked

Fuck Youtube, I hope peertube takes off!

It's really struggling with content and users though. Servers exist, they're not really the big issue.

[-] olsonexi@lemmy.wtf 17 points 1 year ago

Unfortunately, until and unless peertube can pay creators (so basically never), it will only ever see use by foss enthusiasts, and even then only hobbyists will use it as their primary platform. For someone making a career out of it, youtube is pretty much the only real option at the moment.

[-] Black616Angel@feddit.de 15 points 1 year ago

Kinda, but Patreon exists and many of youtubers already get lots of money through it.

[-] sexy_peach@feddit.de 12 points 1 year ago

I disagree. I believe that the problem is that if you upload videos there they don't automatically get a few views. Peertube basically doesn't have an audience.

Earning money with Youtube already is very hard, you need large amount of viewers and it's not enough so many youtubers resort to adverts and product placement within their videos.

Peertube actually has a button that creators can activate. If a user presses it they will see a popup with markdown formatted text where the creator can put their affiliate links, patreon, paypal and whatever they like. I think it's a very neat solution, since it's unobtrusive for the user and very flexible for the creator.

yaay, me too. I try to watch some of the content there and upload some :)

[-] Ignacio@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

I upload there daily since 5 days ago. And before that, the last time I uploaded something there, as well as on youtube, was 3 months ago.

[-] sexy_peach@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago

Cool, can you share the channel?

[-] Ignacio@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

It has content in Spanish or related to Spain somehow, but here it is.

I have no problem with paying for no ads, in fact I think it's ideal. But they keep increasing prices and justifying it by including YT Music. Honestly, if you aren't paying for another music service already it's a great deal. Problem is I don't know anyone that does this.

I did this, but I was paying for YouTube music and then noticed that YT Premium was thrown in. I don't care about that but my daughter watches YT, so great. Then they raised the price to be significantly higher than other music apps so I cancelled. Right about then, they threw in YT Premium for free with my Fi plan so I was back in. Turns out that was only a 1 year trial and it's up next week. We've moved to another music service and my daughter is learning about ad blockers and alternative front ends now.

Thanks Google!

They also harvest your data. It's not like you're just paying for no ads. You're paying AND they're stealing your crap.

[-] yuunikki@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 year ago

I'm not paying no ads. I will gladly use ublock-origin and they'll just keep one upping YouTube every time they try to put ads in

[-] scytale@lemm.ee 15 points 1 year ago

Lol are Turkey and Argentina included because a lot of people use vpn and sign up there?

[-] sir_pronoun@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

I love it when people make way for their successors.

[-] Nougat@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

They're gonna get it from both ends. It used to be free, but now, pay us to watch, or pay us to watch.

We call that the Texas Spit-Roast.

[-] Pika@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

my cost already went up two months ago, if it hikes again I'm bailing on premium. I think the current price is outrageous as it is. I thought I was going to cancel last time but I never did. but a raise again will put it more then I make an hour, and there's no way i can choke that down for a free service. I'll just go twitch only.

[-] atrielienz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Are we surprised? They were gonna try to scrape that revenue one way or another.
