...it's quite clear from the polling that most conservative evangelical Christians like the libertine, gutter-snipe Donald Trump even more than the rest of the Republican Party. They are the strongest pillar of his following. So attempting to pry them loose with appeals to decency is a waste of breath. There have been billions of pixels spent trying to figure out why they like him, and I suppose there are many reasons. But recent polling by the Public Religion Research Institute found that one-third of white evangelicals favor political violence so Trump's insurrection obviously holds major appeal to a lot of them.

The implication here is they're all evil assholes. But having been raised religious, having been a member at an evangelical church and then snapping out of it, another explanation fits for many of them.

I think the main issue here is the most zealous Christians are so because they have been isolated, trained, and brainwashed into thinking superstitiously over years, even decades. They follow faith rather than fact. They are trained to demonize others and ignore other points of view as evil. Many have been convinced to believe that those outside the church are minions of Satan and so of course they're not going to vote for Democrats.

As a result, they're either not going to hear the truth about DT or if they do, they will wave it off as "SaTan'S LiEs". When you base your knowledge on faith rather than good evidence, you can be led to believe literally anything. Such as: "DT is announced by God to lead the nation and fight against the evil baby sacrificing Democrats"

Trump. Religion.

The common denominator to both is low education.

Most evil assholes are such because of things like brainwashing and ignorance. It doesn't make them less evil, nor less of an asshole.

I don't always agree with Rossman but that rant is spot on.

I'd be willing to be that not even Hitler saw himself as evil. (and lets be honest, Hitler did at least one good thing- he offed himself. Which is more than we can say for trump). I'm guessing Mao also did not see himself as evil, despite the massive death toll his modernization push caused.

I hate every single "Christian" quoted in this.

What horrible, small people.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to take anything evangelicals say seriously.

They talk about personal integrity and morals and being gentle and letting your speech be gracious. Yet, they support a leader who is and does the exact opposite. And then proceed to mimic him.

Way to trash your own witness.

Trump is their new messiah. Jesus and the Ten Commandments are out the window. They’re beyond redemption.
