It's fucking crazy that this happens in 2023.

Fuck Vajiralongkorn and the crop top photos of him all over a quick Google search.

Thailand is super great in almost every way, but the monarchy-related part is one of the few big flaws

Thailand is super great for a holiday, if you're a relatively rich westerner, or if you don't know the language.

If you ask the locals, they're likely to give you a different opinion.

You don’t even need to be a rich westerner with the difference in economy. The average Thai you meet there assumes all western travelers are rich, especially those from the US, even though you may be considered middle class or even poor back here.

edit: don’t ever tell a tuk driver you’re from the US, after that you will be taken to every scam shop they’re affiliated with.

Are you speaking generally about how these type of vacation spot situations usually are, or are you informed about life as a thainlander specifically?

[-] Hyperreality@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'm repeating what Thai people have told me.

A lot of the monarchy related part is tied to the nation's politics. The monarchy seems to be the excuse for the Yellow Shirts to interfere with Thai democracy to meet their policy goals.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Just earlier this week, a 26-year-old man was given a prison sentence just for shouting at a passing royal motorcade about a burden imposed on society.

On Wednesday, Ice was found guilty of insulting the monarch by a Bangkok court for two posts made before she joined Move Forward - in the first, she criticised the country's handling of the pandemic, and the second was a repost of a tweet that was said to be critical of the monarchy.

Hers was perhaps the most dramatic of many shock victories by the young Move Forward candidates in the May general election - she won her seat in Bang Bon, a constituency near Bangkok which had been the fiefdom of one of Thailand's most powerful political clans for decades, after a no-frills campaign largely on a bicycle.

This year, Move Forward stunned Thailand's establishment by doing even better, winning more seats than any other party thanks to victories like the one Ice won in Bang Bon.

But the boldness of the 2020 protesters in demanding royal reform prompted the authorities to start using the law again, more extensively than at any other time in Thailand's history.

Trials in Thailand often take many years to conclude, which means the lives of the young activists facing lese-majeste and many other charges in relation to the 2020 protests will be consumed for the foreseeable future by incessant court hearings.

The original article contains 635 words, the summary contains 234 words. Saved 63%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
