HVAC has no right being this entertaining and yet here I am. Again.

Alec is the dude who made me willingly watch and enjoy 90 minutes of discussion on Dishwasher detergents.

Or 30 minutes on just the color Brown

Or 60 minutes (across multiple videos) on Christmas LED lights

Suffice it to say, he can make mundane topics pretty interesting to watch

my dishes are coming out clean from my dishwasher thanks to him

unfortunately people in my house keep "rinsing" the dishes before putting it in. I don't understand

He’s amazing.

And on the fediverse!

Alec is the kind of person who could make a two-hour video essay about the color brown and make it absolutely fascinating.

[-] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 13 points 7 months ago

Ye he would.

Oh wait, he semi did ( a 20m video instead of 2h )

Turn it up to 100!

A 50min video on Mechanical pinball machines which is indeed fascinating!

I love how thorough he always is with his content and producing followups to answer questions. One of the best YouTubers for this type of content right now.

I want an ac, but getting one installed is so ridiculously expensive.

[-] Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 7 points 7 months ago

I had a split ac unit installed about 5 years ago and it cost me like 1300€. What are they charging for it where you live then?

[-] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 3 points 7 months ago

$16,000-20,000 usd for a 2-3 head mini split heat pump

[-] kokopelli@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

Where? If you look online (in the US at least) they are about $2000

[-] BakedCookie@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 7 months ago

Yeah, but unless you can install it yourself you're gonna have a shitty experience. 5/6 companies I called up wouldn't even touch my self bought equipment, and the one that did charged me out the ass for it. Basically, something like 10k-15k in labor costs. It's bullshit. And for anything warranty related you need the license number of the installation contractor before you can even file anything.

[-] kokopelli@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Installing it didn’t seem too bad… You can get ones with pre-pressurized lines and you just cut a hole through the wall and put it on a cement pad. Saying that, I might be a bit more comfortable with hands-on things than the average person

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

Depends on the system, the living space, and the existing HVAC. The box itself can be well under $2k USD, but things like upgrading your ducting can add a lot to the bill if you have a central air system.

[-] ProdigiousFrog@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Heat pumps installations are a racket out in the US right now, it's artificial expense to pad out pockets, there is no practical reason it need be that expensive.

[-] I_Miss_Daniel@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Maybe go for a Window Rattler instead? Easy to install.

[-] lud@lemm.ee 4 points 7 months ago

Don't you need those weird windows for that?

[-] I_Miss_Daniel@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

Might be a regional thing. Here in Australia our houses often have sliding windows, so it's not hard to open one and mount an aircon in the space, sealing around thy edges.

I think some other countries use hinged windows which are less amenable to being violated by a Window Rattler. Placing the entire unit inside against the window and creating some improvised ducting for the outdoor air inlet side can also work in a pinch.

I don't even think they are possible to buy where I live.

I tried looking for one for a similar discussion awhile ago but didn't find any
