In Germany there are channels owned by our public broadcasters which won't have ads and let you watch their videos offline, even if you're not paying for YouTube Premium. Letting you enter PiP is not possible iirc, but it might be in other countries having the same model.
Edit: Also, YouTube seems to be a buggy mess in iOS 😅
Interesting. I’m not sure if the BBC has its own channel in the UK but I’ll check if it’s the same.
As per your edit, what do you mean it’s a a buggy mess on iOS? I haven’t experienced any issues, aside from too many ads and the feed is shit. Like I can watch one video about something new, like camping, and boom all i see is camping videos. Used to recommend fun educating content but now it’s a mess.
Usually their videos have an info box below the title stating they're part of our public broadcasting system and explaining what it means :)
Regarding the buggy mess: I often find it becoming unresponsive or the UI glitching around. For example when changing from dark to light mode and vice versa the text often becomes unreadable. Or when switching from shorts to regular videos the tab bar often becomes unresponsive. As a result of the glitches I was able to get PiP a couple of times even though I'm not on the Premium plan. They might have already patched this though.
Huh… I’ve not noticed any issues at all, although I never switch between light and dark mode, dark mode only for me.
Trust me, YouTube is (or at least was when I was still using the official app) a buggy mess on Android too
is this new on iphone? as far as i knew, that's been a thing for most videos for ages on android, excepting only most music videos.
Pip has been a thing on iPhone for a long time.
YouTube kept it behind Premium, until recently apparently. I wonder if they know people switch away a lot on phones and sometimes don’t come back so they now allow it.
nice man. My phone has been in split screen 90% of the time since I think Android 8. Plex or YouTube revanced up top, Lemmy or Reddit on the bottom.
I really don't get how people enjoy consuming two sources of information at once. Every time I try to watch something while doing something else, I get frustrated at how I'm unable to properly focus on one thing.
For me it's just nice having something in the background, just something you're not actually trying to pay too much attention to, episodes of a show you've already seen, long twitch vods, stuff like that.
I've heard many people say that, but I don't really rewatch shows, and when I do, I still want to focus on them. I also don't really watch live streams or vods, but just like rewatching things, if I choose to do so, I want to take it all in. It kind of irks me hearing half a conversation. When I put something like that on in the background, I keep rewinding a few seconds so I can hear all of the conversation. Idk, for background entertainment music works best for me, personally.
when I was a kid I would doodle in class because it was easier to pay attention to the teacher when I was doing something else
Sounds like you do not have ADHD lol
Idk, there are several things pointing towards me having ADHD, but I haven't looked for a diagnosis. For some reason it just really irks me to hear half of a conversation, so I keep going back to my "background" media to rewind so I can hear everything.
That’s nice, but I’d rather not use Android and share my data with Google who share it with everybody else.
At least with Apple it’s only them taking the data.
My next phone will be. Pixel using GrapheneOS with Google services sandboxed, but stock Android is a massive no for me.
This happened on my android too recently
I can get it on Android too, but for like 3 years or even more.
But only if using US VPN.
Yeah I’ve only noticed it on a handful of channels or videos. Pretty sure Aperture is one.
I really do think it is a bug. As this has happened to me before, but it only works until the next version of the app comes around.
