Can we not start funding some new trains though?

I hope so! Expanding SkyTrain is always a tough battle but Translink seems up to fight for it, so we need to pressure cities to churn out more investments on these big projects. That's almost certainly going to require extra federal funding so one more reason to show up for the next provincial and federal elections to vote for someone who cares about public transit.
