ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter will be honored next month, ahead of his 100th birthday, with a musical gala at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, The Carter Center announced Thursday.

The Sept. 17 event — “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song” — will feature musicians from a range of genres and celebrity guests. Carter’s birthday is Oct. 1.

Artists include Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, GROUPLOVE, Maren Morris and The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus. Notable guests include former Atlanta Braves star Dale Murphy, Atlanta rap artist Killer Mike and actor Sean Penn. Other guests will be announced before the event, organizers said.

The 39th president, who served from 1977 to 1981, remains at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he has been receiving hospice care since February 2023. He was last seen publicly at funeral services for former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who died in November. But those close to him say he remains in good spirits, sometimes receiving visitors, regularly watching Braves games on television and still enjoying music.

Maybe not the greatest president or politician.

However, he is the greatest ex-president by a landslide. There's nobody else even close.

He's truly a good man.

They’re always referred to as “President” even after their term(s) have concluded. Though I also suspect I’m misinterpreting your comment

[-] Windex007@lemmy.world 25 points 4 months ago

I suspect the commenter is emphasising that what makes Carter great are his activities after leaving office. Out of every president, his post-presidential activities are the greatest.

[-] Wiz@midwest.social 8 points 4 months ago

That's what I meant, thanks!

[-] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 4 months ago

Ahhhh that makes sense thanks!

[-] Stovetop@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

I don't think that is the case, Trump is usually referred to as "Former President Trump" in the news since the end of his term.

[-] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 4 months ago

That is because Trump is Trump, and the norms changed around him. Before he entered the scene, former presidents were always referred to as “President” unless the current president was there too and a distinction needed to be made.

Most people who would feel called to show respect towards a former president don’t feel that way towards Trump.

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

He’s the only one where we have to remind them they’re not in charge anymore. Most are relieved lol

[-] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 months ago

OK good to know I wasn’t completely making this up lol

[-] teamevil@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

I think it's because if the moron hears people call him president he'll assume he's still president.

[-] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 months ago

I was under the impression that was because it’s not required but you’re probably right

[-] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

I like to remember it as he was supposed to be jailed and sentenced to life in prison for his crimes against the state, so media just uses it to slight him using it to defame his Presidency by calling him former President. Notice no one says former president Obama, Bush, Clinton, Carter etc.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 months ago

Personally, I think he should be referred to as "former one-term president Trump" but that's just my opinion.

[-] datelmd5sum@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

is there something preventing him from holding the office again?

[-] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 0 points 4 months ago

I think there is "some" ambiguity about whether the two term limit is just consecutive terms or total...

But I'm too lazy to research.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 months ago

Carter only served one term anyway, so it doesn't matter. He's perfectly eligible, though maybe he shouldn't be since he's 100yo and on hospice care. Still, I'd take him over the orange weirdo.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 55 points 4 months ago

congratulations to Jimmy Carter, It always warms my heart to see him, he is such a good and decent human being, IMO the best president USA ever had.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 29 points 4 months ago

Certainly the best in terms of beliefs, ethics, etc. Unfortunately not as effective as he should have been. Played way too nice with Tip O'Neill and Reagan both because he's a nice guy, but they played dirty.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 19 points 4 months ago

He wasn't too nice, the people just didn't appreciate it.
Same mentality that causes Trump, an obvious malignant narcissist to have about 50% support among voters, despite most of his supporters will be harmed by his presidency.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago

Too nice in those specific cases, not overall.

He did not get down in the dirt with O'Neill or Reagan and that was to his detriment unfortunately.

[-] vanontom@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Sounds a lot like Obama. High quality human, unwilling to get too dirty battling human sewage, bad faith tactics, delays, obstructions, etc. Gave up a supreme court nominee due to... "norms". To be fair, nobody imagined a clown/wannabe-dictator and his three (!?) SCOTUS picks to quickly reshape the presidency into a monarchy with infinite powers.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

Yes, except O'Neill was supposed to be on Carter's side. But he slowly soured against Carter and he was a real force of will that Carter was just not prepared to go up against.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 13 points 4 months ago

And then the traitors conspired with your country's enemies to oust him.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Not my country, but I remember him vividly regardless, being around 14 when he became president, when he appeared on TV, I could tell he was genuinely a nice and honest person, trying to do good, more than most other people/politicians appearing on the news.

[-] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 40 points 4 months ago

Death flag. They tried to do this for Betty White and she died like two weeks before her bday.

[-] bunkyprewster@startrek.website 16 points 4 months ago

Seems they took this into account. Celebration Sept 17, actual birthday Oct 1.

[-] eskimofry@lemmy.world 15 points 4 months ago

They did not take into account that death might take THAT into account.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 4 months ago

Better than a surprise party at his age!

[-] Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago

Honestly thought he was going to die soon after his wife with how long they were married

[-] Eezyville@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 months ago

That may have been something he wanted. I know i would

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 months ago

Soon means a different thing when you're turning 100yo probably.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 4 months ago

Didn't his family say he was basically at death's door a few months ago? I don't recall the exact words, but I read it to mean possibly hospice.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

Yes.

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/jimmy-carter-year-hospice-care-reaches-milestone/story?id=108633415

It seems a bit dark to celebrate someone in this state. JMO. I don’t mean we can’t discuss it or appreciate it, but crossing the century mark in a state where he likely can’t appreciate it and people celebrating it seems off.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 months ago

This post says he's receiving hospice care. You don't even have to open the article.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 4 months ago

Shit, you're right. I thought hospice lasts like a week or two. I didn't realize it could last for so long. But I base that on my own father going into hospice, where he was gone in like five or six days. He died the night before I was to fly out to be there. My mistake was in thinking they're mostly the same and so I didn't read anything after the headline because of the internal conflict.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 months ago

Yeah, it can really last as long as you want. If you've got the money then you can just have them take care of you for years. Usually, for most of us plebs, it's only a few weeks if that. Who knows how long it'll be for Carter.
