i can't fucking fathom being a member of a party in which such a large percentage of members thinks i shouldn't have the right to vote or make my own health decisions

much less dying for them

It happens in many different contexts and often I feel there's a logic to it. Lots of people who are marginalized in one way are privileged in another. Maintaining access to that privilege can also mean an expectation to maintain your own marginalization. If someone feels they end up better on the whole by doing so, and isn't deeply connected to others without that privilege, and doesn't feel safe navigating life without that privilege, it gets pretty easy to justify on a personal level.

you just described a cult, which is what the GOP is

funny you say that, I'm drawing from some past cult-adjacent experiences when I think about the subject. there's definitely lots of overlap and I think a lot of the social motives are one and the same.

Fwiw, and this isn't to excuse them, the Alt-right is a very vocal and disproportionately influential minority segment of the Republicans because, and I can't stress this enough, their base would rather vote for a criminal anti-Christ republican than a moderate Democrat. The GOP has capitalized on this and have continued to listen to the alt-right because they aren't losing any elections where it matters. Though that does seem to be changing this election.

The alt-right is the strongest in LOCAL elections where an individual vote has more power and influence than in national elections.

So make sure you vote in every election you are eligible for.

[citation needed] that the Alt-Right isn't the majority of the GOP by now.

I wish they could get what they deserve without dragging everyone else down with them.
