I've bought and paid for every civ game since civ3...

I even paid for civ4 twice. Boxed CD and on steam.... And now you're going to treat me like a criminal with shitty DRM??? Welp, i guess i'm not buying Civ7, Sid...

No more turns....

[-] daqu@feddit.org 64 points 4 months ago

DRM has never stopped me from pirating a game, but multiple times it stopped me from buying it.

Better pick the correct Proton version from the get-go then Linux users, switching it more than 4-5 times within 24 hours or so will trigger Denuvo blocking the game from starting.

Or just don't buy this crap :)

[-] lunsjentilanette@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 months ago

is this intended from denuvo's side?

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 months ago

Probably not. I assume it registers it as different systems and blocks after too many.

[-] SmileyBMM@feddit.nl 40 points 4 months ago

As a Linux user, Civ 6 post launch support made me swear off of buying a 2k game ever again. Linux users got an objectively worse version of the game, and the fact they couldn't be bothered to add the 2k account exclusive leader to the Linux version shows they really don't care about customer loyalty. Rumors also say this game won't support mods, which is insane, as mods made Civ 6 playable with an actually functional UI. It's a shame, as I love the Civ series.

[-] trolololol@lemmy.world 15 points 4 months ago

I've started playing with proton. Many say it users the GPU better and you gets better graphics but I didn't notice anything.

What it changed is that Linux version is like many years without updates, but with proton you have the windows version which is compatible with all mods and let's you run game of the month.

[-] Yorick@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago

For the mods at least, the dev interview at PAX clearly had a moment when one guy said "the possibilities of combination with civilizations switching is going to be higher, especially with the modding community adding custom civs.

But since they said a huge part of the playerbase is console, I'm guessing mods won't be using the steam workshop but the launcher so that consoles can have mods...

As for Linux support yeah I would like to hope, maybe the stats of Civ6 on the steamdeck could push them to make it compatible but if they have denuvo I doubt it...

Civ 7 won't be using the 2k launcher. They announced that when they removed it from civ 6.

[-] TheOctonaut@mander.xyz -3 points 4 months ago

lol.

What in the history of electronic entertainment makes you think that they're done with doing the shitty thing now that they stopped doing it once?

[-] kameecoding@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

It was announced by them that 2k launcher wont be used for Civ 7, so that, that makes me think it wont be used

[-] Havald@lemmy.world 37 points 4 months ago

Sometimes I wonder why companies make decisions like this. But then I remember just how many completely braindead executives are out there.

At least it's not denuvo anti cheat but their anti tamper is bad enough. Civ 6 is my most played game and I guess I'll have more time to play it now after all... It's really too bad I was very excited to try out the new features they've added.

[-] kameecoding@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

If you like the new features you can always just go ahead and play some Endless Legends, most of it is from there

[-] Havald@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Endless legend is undoubtedly a great game but I never liked the hero thing they have going on unfortunately.

[-] kameecoding@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Well Civ 7 will be very similar with the generals, what I didnt like personally was managing the items for the units and stuff

[-] Lumisal@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

You might want to try Humankind then. Sounds like Civ 7 is basically copying the ideas from it anyway

[-] Havald@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

I've played humankind quite a bit actually. I had fun for a while but although I liked the idea at first I don't love the leader switching system as it is implemented in humankind.

[-] zod000@lemmy.ml 30 points 3 months ago

So don't buy Civ 7, got it. Thanks!

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 months ago

I really liked 5, but I never got 6 and don't plan on getting 7. Honestly, I'm not into what they offer anymore. There's other civ-likes out there now, and there's other genres I'd rather play anyway. I was watching civ 7 with some interest still, but for sure not with this.

[-] zod000@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 months ago

I've been playing them since the first game and I don't think I've truly loved any of them since 4. So even though I've bought them all thus far, it is pretty easy to skip one of I don't like where they go. No games series can last forever.

Words outta my mouth. FFS

[-] AFC1886VCC@reddthat.com 13 points 3 months ago

I will play Civ 7 but I won't pay for it.

[-] Trollception@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 months ago

I don't agree with pirating. I'll simply not buy the game instead.

[-] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 3 points 3 months ago

The cool thing about it, is that everybody can make that decision for themselves.

[-] Emmie@lemmings.world 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

We shall wait for our arrested development queen empress. May she mercifully release with the nfo slur count under ten

[-] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 9 points 3 months ago

Soooo, this means Civ 7 will now 100% be ripped off and pirated.

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago

Were there some problems with sales of the previous Civ games or something that necessitate this?

[-] Etterra@lemmy.world 27 points 4 months ago

Probably just some executive being a typical 9-figure jackass.

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 months ago

Yeah exactly, from my understanding these are some of the most popular and best selling games around so.... completely unnecessary

[-] GiveMemes@jlai.lu 1 points 4 months ago

It's also that their monetization scheme begets piracy. A game and the dlc for it should never cost more than $100

[-] weker01@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 months ago

That's a strange hill to die on. I mean sure I will also never buy this game but with inflation it's just a matter of time.

I would much rather have a higher initial cost with no macro transactions in game.

[-] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Interesting that they looked at Humankind and aped only its worst design decisions lol.

If you don’t choose one civilization to play through to the end I’m out.

[-] bradbeattie@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago

Don't forget you can ignore publishers.

Ignore 2k

https://steamcommunity.com/groups/DenuvoGames/curation is also useful.

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works -1 points 4 months ago

Launchers themselves are a form of DRM anyway

[-] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

At least launchers don't fry your SSDs and tank your performance like Denuvo "allegedly" does.

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

Ok, doesn't make what I said wrong

[-] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago

I didn't mean to imply that they did. Just pointing out a difference.
