The official Monero website has some good recommendations. There's always the option of using cash (etc.) to buy Monero from one of the decentralized exchanges, but you may have to interact irl.
!monero@monero.town
There's as well !monero!monero@lemmy.ml which I guess halted in favor of !monero!monero@monero.town?
If this is the case, I'm wondering why not locking the community, writing a message in the community information to go to the actual active one (!monero!monero@monero.town)...
I don't know how safe this is, but what I do:
- Make a local XMR wallet, backup, and host your own blockchain
- Buy regular crypto, say LTC, from a legit exchange with KYC
- Swap that to XMR on an anon swap/exchange, storing in your wallet 3 (optional). Move from your first wallet to another, for extra safety???
Spend it where you can, not many places. BTCPay server, which can be self-hosted, supports it, so there are options.
I would rather not use KYC even for low-sensitivity transactions. Because I am afraid of such sensitive info leaking. Sure, I do KYC for things like phone service already - but would avoid it at any cost where it can be done.

there's a surprising amount of sites where you can buy gift cards with Monero, for a lot of services. there's also a few where you can buy a prepaid card
Do people not trade at meetups anymore?
To be safe: paper wallets.
The rest: YMMV
coinatmradar lists ATMs.
have someone used those crypto atms?
