I have an idea, let's make a video sharing website and add no volume control at all!

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 14 points 1 month ago

Please keep in mind that it is a Tiktok replacement - i.e. meant for mobile devices, as the vertical nature suggests. And mobile devices already have volume controls? Hence that is a "mute" button, not a volume control, and while the project is still in its early stages, I doubt that they would add that functionality bc it would introduce tension between the user's natural inclination to hit their device volume knob rather than have to use the embedded control.

On the other hand, I see SO MANY people criticizing the lack of that feature, perhaps they should make the video player work slightly differently when viewed from a desktop? But is that really what people want - wouldn't people on a desktop still not enjoy watching content on a vertical axis that was meant for a mobile screen?

It's probably a cost to benefit trade-off that they have to make hard decisions on, given how few people are willing to devote their time in return for no remuneration to this project. Honestly I'm surprised that so many people on Lemmy of all places aren't receptive to such a FOSS project in its early stages yet coming along so quickly.

I hope you don't feel that I'm picking on you, just sharing my thoughts. Please feel free to respond however you like:-).

Yeah it's all good. But it is not a mobile app, it's a 'web app' able to be shared on desktops, so it needs a volume control.

They could disable the volume slider on mobile devices I suppose, they can link to the actual volume of the device anyway, so it would just be an alternative to pressing the buttons.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea for a feature. But somebody would have to implement it first, and there's so much else to do as well, it may be awhile until they get around to it.

Volume doesn’t work on my loops app. I get no sound at all

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

Huh, I did not realize there were any apps. The web link works for me, in Firefox on Android. I wonder if you have a permissions problem and need to allow access to the speakers, but I am out of my element not having used iOS myself for a decade, though I wish you luck.🤞🍀

I always love watching performers build up a song, and this is no exception.

Side note: Ugh. Loops doesn't have an embed API (yet?). Just emailed them asking if they would consider adding the og:video metadata to the page headers.

[-] rockSlayer@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

I'm an amateur web dev, is that really all it takes with HTML?

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 7 points 1 month ago

More or less if you use JS to fetch the link and parse the meta tags in its header. Lemmy does that when you submit a post with a link, and it'll pull the title, description, image, and video properties and include them with the post detail.

From there, it's just a matter of detecting those and rendering them.

og is shorthand for open graph, it’s a standard Facebook started for capturing page metadata to use in embedded previews and has caught on to wide adoption. It’s not an official HTML tag but it’s very ubiquitous today.

Going down New and saw this post after posting on your embeddeding test. Whatever you did, it worked!

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 2 points 1 month ago

I had to go to the Loops page and copy the video URL from there, unfortunately (e.g it wasn't a standard embed).

That test was just to primarily see if the video would embed at all and not be blocked by CORS or something.

Hopefully Loops will put the video URL in the metadata to make things easy. If not, I may attempt a workaround

[-] LilDumpy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Super cool. I am hoping that Loops will be easily integrated into Lemmy at some point to where it shows on my feed as if I were on loops with the setting option to auto-start or not, and when I upvote they get the heart.

[-] OpenStars@discuss.online 2 points 2 days ago

Btw Admiral Patrick has embedded Loops videos at https://tesseract.dubvee.org/c/loops@midwest.social. It's a full embed of the video, though not full integration of Loops as you were saying - e.g. there's no heart icon or comments, though he keeps adding more features to the embed like metadata display. Cool! 😎

[-] LilDumpy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Awesome. I'm going to try it out! Excited to see progress happen so fast

[-] ptz@dubvee.org 2 points 1 month ago

That's what I'm hoping, but from what I've noticed, most other federated platforms (Mastodon, Wordpress, etc) all seem to use the user-follow paradigm which Lemmy still doesn't support.

Supposedly PeerTube follows work, but I only ever seem to get the initial fetch (though I can comment and vote on them from here, and those show up on PeerTube).

[-] LilDumpy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Ya I am hoping one day (hopefully soon) I'll be able to scroll through my Lemmy feed and see a Mastodon/microblogging post (which I occasionally see) from some people I am able to follow, while I scroll past a Loops video, and some Pixelfed content too. Just full integration both ways. That will be the tipping point for federation to pop off once that happens, because then it doesn't matter which federated service you choose you will have access to all the social media content types.

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago

In the cross-post someone gave a link to a male vocal version with Ryan Reynolds and a surprise guest:-).

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 10 points 1 month ago

That's awesome!

Side note, is there any way to actually open the user's profile on Loops? I've tried clicking everything on the page and can't seem to open it.

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago

I don't have a Loops account myself - this is a repost - but perhaps it needs an account to work?

It's also extremely early in its development so perhaps that is something that is not even implemented yet.:-)

[-] AmidFuror@fedia.io 6 points 1 month ago

I don't know this artist. But I do know that auto tune is rampant among social media singers. I don't have the software to see if it is being used here.

[-] rigatti@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

You don't need software. This is definitely autotuned, but she is a good singer. One thing to listen for is that the pitch is so perfect it almost sounds like a synthesizer. You can't fake the timbre of the voice though, which is why I say she's a good singer.

[-] DokPsy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

You can't fix terrible singing and it still sound human. Good but a few pennies off tune when layering? You bet it'll work.

A lot of social media videos are tuned to flat 0 for each note and is the vocal equivalent of magazine covers photoshopped to "perfection"

[-] rigatti@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

It's sad but that's the standard of what people are used to hearing these days.

[-] DokPsy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 weeks ago

It's a vicious cycle because people who are generally good singers will assume they're terrible since they're not as pitch perfect. Then, they'll either never sing or modify their sound to perfection to compete

[-] OpenStars@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

I found this video offering more informative and also this article. Kinda neat actually:-).

[-] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

It's good to see Tiktok content leaking over there.

[-] Signtist@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, I'm already sick of this song just from hearing it in the background of the tiktok videos my wife watches before bed.

Analog chorus pedal.
