Summary

Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher, was found dead by apparent suicide in his San Francisco apartment on November 26 at age 26.

Balaji had recently criticized OpenAI’s use of copyrighted data to train AI models like GPT-4, arguing it harms online knowledge communities and raises copyright concerns.

His comments were cited in lawsuits accusing OpenAI of copyright infringement. Balaji had been named as a custodian in a lawsuit by The New York Times shortly before his death.

OpenAI defended its practices as fair use.

OpenAI defended its practices as fair use.

That's a weird way to admit to murder.

David Serrano Sewell, executive director of the city's office of chief medical examiner, told the San Jose Mercury News, "the manner of death has been determined to be suicide."

Why all the "apparent" shit? HAS BEEN DETERMINED is pretty damn clear.

Sound like they've been straightening it out since hiring Liverman in 2021 after the audit. What a shitstorm in that area though, are opiates really that prevalent there?

I kind of knew about that. But it sounded from the article that it bankrupted the medical examiner's office dealing with the opioid deaths in that particular area.

I mean, it has to be worse in certain areas.

Yeah, I don't know what the cost for testing is, but here's more statistics for the area. https://www.sf.gov/data/preliminary-unintentional-drug-overdose-deaths
