Not to sound sarcastic, but that's more severe than what hit-and-run drivers who kill pedestrians and cyclists get.

Indeed. I expect the recent driver who died after colliding with a pack of cycle racers would have been pretty lightly punished.

Perhaps this case will lead to heavier penalties for those who hit vulnerable road users
