~~Is there a reason given anywhere?~~

There is:

I’ve worked on this project a decade. That is a long time and I need to move on in life.

@smeg @schizoidman Based on what I saw in a forum, they want to move on. Have been single handedly maintaining a project for a decade. They, through the project, also requested donations to help sustain this project early this year. Clearly, finance is one of the reasons. Maintaining such a project and rolling out updates as a single contributor, no doubt, is a hard and more than commendable task. I'm not surprised this has come to this

Yeah I'm not surprised a single developer project would end, I'm just surprised something with such a good rep only had one maintainer! Huge credit to them for all their effort, hopefully this prompts a larger group to pick up the work.

What's the recommended alternative?

I moved from Fennec to Iceraven for some reason I can't remember (frequency of updates?). Since I can't remember off the top of my head I'll just say, maybe consider Iceraven too and research whether it's a good alternative for you.

Fennec is updated pretty frequently, generally following the Firefox release cycle with about 3-4 weeks delay. On average there is one update every month.

I think it might have been because of the add-ons compatibility then.
