followup to smellSo I feel pretty sure it's probably something dead in the roof now. I called, but it doesn't qualify as urgent, so I have to call back tomorrow. Fucking lucky I haven't invited anyone over for tomorrow or NY.

Tbh the idea of showering in the dead animal room isn't actually what's getting me, I'm mostly worried about the smell transferring (even a little bit) to me or my clothes. I'm very very self conscious about smells and the idea of having to walk around smelling like the grim reaper honestly makes me wonder if a sponge bath in the kitchen sink would leave me better off

Now that I think about it, I've noticed a lot more flies around the place as well. I was actually gonna complain about that earlier, but I just assumed a few got in when I've had to leave the door open a few times recently to bring stuff in, etc and it was my own fault

One things sure, I don't really feel like making, or eating, dinner anymore. Oh well. At least the smell is contained to the bathroom, at least for now. There's no vents or ducts in any other rooms. Although the laundry has a manhole, and the laundry door doesn't stay closed, so if it starts to seep out of there, I'll have to tape the bloody door shut or something

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

I had a possum or something do thatā€¦ it was the worst.

spoilerIf the flies are grey with stripes then those are flesh flies and you know for sure.

Ironically I found opening the windows and doors to air the place out just created a low pressure zone that let the stink come fully out of the wall and spread through the house.

I ended up closing all windows and doors and then directing a fan at the exit point (the gap in the wall under where the heater was installed) to keep air pushing against it so it couldnā€™t come out.

Because I canā€™t use traditional air fresheners around my cat I set out dishes of white vinegar to deodorise the air. Then dabbed 1-2 drops of Nilodor on cotton balls or a tissue, put it in a paper cup, then tied a paper towel over the top.

If the hole the smell is coming from is a fan vent you can leave the fan on. If you have a manhole into a ceiling cavity you might be able to see if you can reach it with a rubbish bag pulled over one of those long grabbers.

Obviously donā€™t put yourself at risk by going to the top of the ladder or crawling into the space! Itā€™s possible to step off a rafter and fall through the ceiling.

If you canā€™t get it out you need to wait for it to decomposeā€¦ I forget how long it took but it was at the very least a few weeks. Maybe longer

Edit: If youā€™re struggling with the smell you could wipe some Vicks under your nose

spoilernothing smells worse than rat

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 5 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

spoilerWhatever the hell it is is seared into my memory now. I can't actively smell it while I'm not near it, but i still get random little whiffs. Even while I'm outside

Fuck this, I'm lightning incense

E: apparently rats will only reek for a few days, but if it's a possum it can stink for a few months. On the one hand, I guess that's good if the LL doesn't want anything to do with it and would rather leave it, on the other, it's a fucking dead animal - in the same way I wouldn't leave a raw chicken breast on my bench for months, I sure as shit don't want a dead rat or possum in my roof

[-] Catfish@aussie.zone 4 points 8 hours ago

Deceased rodent is a smell you won't forget. Hot weather is kinda helpful because it mummifies them a bit quicker. Our chimney debacle winter last year reeked for months.

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 2 points 7 hours ago

I can assure you it will be stuck in my nostrils for the next 3 months at least. Every now and then I'll probably get a tiny whiff out of nowhere :/

I hadn't considered that! I guess that's one positive from the warm weather. Hopefully it makes it less habitable for maggots or whatever else is trying to get up there for an easy dinner. I really don't want to have to deal with an infestation one week after moving in

Ended up leaving Melbourne at 10am (after doubling back realising I'd left my wallet and hat at home). Made pretty decent time just pedal to the metal to Albury now another longer break just past Yass. Just 1.5 hrs more after this. Caught up with the fire news and it looks farked. So many people love Halls Gap though I have every confidence it will come back even if it gets hit really hard this time

[-] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 9 hours ago

safe driving šŸ˜˜šŸ˜˜šŸ˜˜

[-] Duenan@aussie.zone 6 points 9 hours ago

I hope you keep safe and youā€™re nowhere near those fires.

I donā€™t know exactly whatā€™s going on but a massive wind change out there is causing havoc with it.

[-] just_kitten@aussie.zone 8 points 9 hours ago

No thankfully complete opposite direction, past Canberra now. Still been a hot day of driving though. Car said temp outside was 37 most of the way through. Will be getting the cool change a day later than Melbourne where I'm going, it won't be as hot a night as yesterday though. I am glad I slept in a bit without driving while exhausted, some real clowns on the road

[-] Aradina@lemmy.ml 10 points 10 hours ago

Last night I had a really nice dream. In it I was in a happy and loving relationship with someone who cared about me. It didn't even last that long, but in the dream I felt like it had been longer.

I've been thinking about it all day. She didn't even have a face, I just remember hugging her and thinking about how comfortable I was.

One of those not-nightmares that feels like one in retrospect

[-] neurospice@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 7 hours ago

I get a few of those dreams every now and then. It always feels good at the time, but after waking it's terrible. I always feel so sad and lonely afterwards and a part of me always wants to go back. I'm pretty sure these kinds of dreams are fairly common to experience, but I'm not sure if that's any solace.

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 5 points 10 hours ago

I had one of those during a rough patch 6 or so years ago. It honestly kind of restored my hope and optimism, and I was thinking about it for the next month. I've never had a dream like that again

[-] Aradina@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

It just made me feel really shitty. I fell in love with my bed time hallucination. Feels pretty pathetic to me.

I'm just having a whinge though. I'll be fiiiine

[-] Duenan@aussie.zone 8 points 10 hours ago

This year Iā€™ve ended up with some chocolates that I really like, some of them a little different from usual like orange slices coated in dark chocolate and peanuts coated in dark chocolate and a lot of Lindor chocolate.

I think Iā€™m almost relieved this year not to get a Cadbury favourites box.

I think itā€™s the least favourite of any chocolate boxes i like to get because I hate whatā€™s in them.

Oh and also got a box of shortbread biscuits, oohh theyā€™re so good.

[-] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 8 points 9 hours ago

I got gifted a bucket of Maltesers šŸ˜Ž

[-] Duenan@aussie.zone 6 points 9 hours ago

Oh I got a box of them too.

I havenā€™t eaten them in forever and they taste so good.

[-] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 6 points 9 hours ago
[-] Baku@aussie.zone 5 points 9 hours ago

Get me a bucket of maltesers or M&Ms and you'll have yourself a very happy Baku!

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 3 points 9 hours ago

I know this is probably blasphemy, but I hate getting those lindt ball box things. Lindt chocolate blocks are ā™„ļø, but the lindor ball things just aren't nice to me. At least the 3 standard ones usually in those boxes aren't. I stopped at the lindt store on Spencer a few years ago and got a mint one and a few other flavours and they were good. I'd rather celebrations tbh

[-] Catfish@aussie.zone 2 points 7 hours ago

Agreed. Not dark enough to bother with. At least 70% or bust

[-] Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone 3 points 9 hours ago

I, too, am not a Lindt ball person!

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 4 points 9 hours ago

Yesssss finally found my peoples!

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 6 points 9 hours ago

Ugh. There's been a horrendous stench in the bathroom all day and I can't for the life of me figure out where it's coming from or how to fix it

spoilered cause probably a bit grossIt smells kind of like a combination of mold, rotting meat, and rotten eggs. It's awful. Probably sewer gas I'm guessing. My bathroom and toilet are 2 separate rooms that share a wall, but I don't believe share a wastewater line

I can smell it in both, but it's extremely strong in the bathroom, and only faint in the toilet room if the fan isn't running. Can't smell it while it is. It's almost strong enough to knockout a bloody horse in the bathroom. I was thinking dry P trap, because I haven't used the bathtub while I've been here, and this place I believe was vacant for a little while. I've tried running the taps and tipping a fair bit of water down the drains, enought o hopefully dislodge anything that could be causing the smell if it isn't sewer gas, but no dice

There's no clothes on the floor in the bathroom or anything, and both at least appear visibly clean. I've tried sniffing each drain but they don't really smell bad, they just smell like water with a little bit of "grandma's house"/old people smell

I think I'm gonna have to admit I dunno and call the landlord to get a plumber out. I'm just scared maybe I've unintentionally fucked something up, or it's a dead easy fix and I get stung with the cost

[-] Duenan@aussie.zone 5 points 9 hours ago

Check to make sure thereā€™s water in the toilet as well. Sometimes lack of water in the bowl can caused that.

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 3 points 8 hours ago

Thankfully I think that'll be fine. I've been here for a while now, and drink a lot of water, so the toilet would very rarely go more than 8 or so hours without a flush. It seems to hold water fine. I did however notice that the gap around what I assume is the sewage pipe going out the back has a big gap around it, which seems to have been stuffed with.... Toilet paper? I don't know. It's not dripping, and doesn't look wet or moist (or dirty), and doesn't smell, so I doubt that's the issue. Really fucking weird though

[-] SituationCake@aussie.zone 5 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

If you can bear it, try sniffing close to the actual drains, and see which one has the strongest smell. Also, fill up the bath/sink with some water, and observe how itā€™s draining, to see if itā€™s draining slowly. That will help narrow down the cause and you can describe it better to plumber when they visit. If none of the drains seem to be source of the smell, see if you can take a sniff around the ceiling fan. Itā€™s possible something dies in the roof, and because ceiling fan vents out to the roof space the smell is free to waft into the bathroom. This would also be a landlord call, so they can get a pest controller to maybe get the dead thing out of ceiling, and check thereā€™s no mouse/rat residents in the ceiling.

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 5 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Thanks! I think this was actually more helpful than you realise! I climbed onto a chair and it certainly seems to be a lot stronger towards the ceiling fan. I can't safely get right up to it (I don't currently own a ladder... Yet another thing for the list sigh), but just based on how it was stronger closer to it than away from it, I think you may be right

I've gotten as close as I physically can to the drains (the shower is too small to bend or sit down in, bathtub would require getting in and lying down, and the sink I can get fairly close to but it's got a small square basin). They all really do mostly just smell like water, a tiny dash of soap, and old people

E: oh and if it is that, that kind of makes a lot of sense now that I think about it. It's been hot today, so it'd be super hot in there, and it would also explain why I can faintly smell it in the toilet room, and also why no other drains or rooms in the house smell bad

[-] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 4 points 9 hours ago

Buy a bottle of cloudy ammonia from the supermarket. It's very cheap. Pour a bit in each plug hole. Leave overnight. Pour water down each plug hole. Repeat if necessary.

[-] useless_modern_god@aussie.zone 8 points 10 hours ago

All the leftovers, and everybody wants Chinese lmao.

Ok now for a positive comment. Visited the grandma's house and she had a guitar amp in her garage that must've belonged to one of my cousins back in the day. It was very dusty! She insisted I take it, so now I have an amp with overdrive yay!

Sometimes good things happen when you're not looking for them :)

I need to brag - the trip to the shops ended up being absolutely worth it: I scored a puffer jacket for a grand total of $6.40. Now I'm extra ready for Japan and can put the rest of the money I thought I'd need to spend on a jacket towards Mofusand goodies!

Given how bad the wind looked on the forecast, I can happily say Iā€™ve ridden in worse.

Down at my mates for Chrissie leftovers and their salads are the bomb. Surprised I was able to have a full late lunch given how my gut felt this morning.

Now time for some online shopping, methinks.

Hope everyone is having a nice Boxing Day!

Christmas day report 2.

That cousin who totes disrespected me last week. šŸ™„

Started talking about all of us going on holiday with him to Ireland.

This is after he said the bus tour operator on his last holiday was boring and would point out the most boring things, like ancient ruins of monasteries

and I said I'd be "Stop the bus!" and would be excited to see the ruins of the places where monks worked to save western civilisation after the fall of Rome.

To him the tour would be seeing places where some of his ancestors ( the men ) came from . I truly would not have enough eyes to roll.

Talking with him yesterday was a good exercise on how a very average sexist copes with talking to a woman who is not cowed by him and is way smarter and knows stuff better ( not perfect, just better ) The copium was spread thick.

"That's just your opinion."

changes subject

starts to get passive aggressive

appeals to other people

Christmas day report.

Some of you may remember me writing about my BIL who is a hoarder and for whom we spent a lot of energy and time cleaning up his house and yard. Weeks of horrible disgusting dirty work.

He does not have much furniture, nearly all that he has he inherited from his dad, just like he inherited the house. And he does need to replace his kitchen and bathroom .

So I organised a nice big gift card from ikea to him as a present. Just to get him looking at the website or in the actual store as well as getting something that could make his life better.

He opened the present. He was furious.

It seems to me he was counting on cash so that in our usual cash gift exchange he would come out even. Take into account he doesn't make any meaningful contribution to xmas dinners or any fam celebration, he usually comes out ahead.

I had no idea he was that much of an unredeemed Scrooge.

Braved the shops to get groceries for dinner. Apart from the heat, it's not that busy actually. Plenty of parking and roads weren't mad.

Very surprised.
