It's "circle to search" for anyone wondering

[-] limerod@reddthat.com 13 points 23 hours ago

I had written that info in post body.

[-] Neon@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago

Hm.

Well that's embarassing.

[-] toynbee@lemmy.world 11 points 22 hours ago

I also missed it in the body, as my client doesn't do much to highlight short body posts, so I appreciate both your comment and your willingness to acknowledge your mistake.

"Coveted feature" might be a bit exaggerated.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 8 points 23 hours ago

Yeah, I honestly hate it TBH. It's made screenshottimg things much more awkward.

Basically nerfed a feature I use all the time to make a feature I almost never use easier to use... I get I'm not the only android user in the world, but it would be nice to be able to pick between which mode you want.

In colorOS smartphones you have the old fullscreen google lens function which can be accessed from the Smart Sidebar.

[-] wazzupdog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 day ago

Now if only call screening was available on all devices that'd be great.

[-] limerod@reddthat.com 1 points 18 hours ago

This would be an awesome feature. It should be made available on other devices like Circle to search.

[-] bokherif@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

NOOOOO, you nEed to bUy piXeL for that!

[-] AmazingAwesomator@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

sadly, i have to rely on Carrion from f-droid to block everything (dont have a pixel) :(

[-] original_reader@lemm.ee 1 points 16 hours ago

Why "sadly"? What's your experience with Carrion?

[-] mac@lemm.ee 1 points 17 hours ago

I transferred my old number to a VoIP provider and got a new number that I only give to friends and family.

I don't get spam calls on either number now.

[-] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 1 points 23 hours ago

Have you ever used Yet Another Call Blocker?

I'm curious how it compares to Carrion (I'm not sure they're directly comparable, looks like Carrion does a little more than YACB).

I've used YACB for years, just to keep my phone from ringing for unknown calls, and only allow contacts to ring through.

The play store link does not work and the fdroid app was last updated in 2021.

You will have to switch soon. DivestOS has been shutdown

[-] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

There's still Lineage (which is what DivestOS is based on), and Graphene for Pixel.

I'm currently running DivestOS on a 2017 flagship, it's really good there (I also run it on some Pixels).

I'm really hoping someone (preferably a team) will pickup DivestOS. Makes me wish I had the leadership skills to pull a team together.

[-] limerod@reddthat.com 1 points 23 hours ago

I was takking more about the apps being shutdown. DivestOS shutdown with its suit of mobile apps.

[-] bradboimler@startrek.website 1 points 1 day ago

I use this on my pixel with Graphene OS and it works great once I completely degoogoled my entire phone my spam calls and text pretty much all went away.

[-] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

I recently switched my cell service to JMP.chat, which pipes your SMS into XMPP (it's brilliant, SMS is no longer tied to a physical device or SIM). I still get spam sms, but it's far less an issue.

Plus I can pop any Sim into my phone and it has no affect on my phone number that's with JMP. That all remains in XMPP, and the new SIM would just provide a different data connection (and it's own number with its own voice and SMS).

[-] catloaf@lemm.ee 2 points 21 hours ago

What component provides this feature? I just changed to grapheneos and I miss it.

[-] limerod@reddthat.com 3 points 20 hours ago

I guess the Google app. If you install the Gapps. You can try this app to trigger Circle to Search.

[-] catloaf@lemm.ee 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

That works, but I can't activate it by gesture and the tile doesn't show the app I want, only the tile pulldown, so it's useless.

But either way that's not the function I was thinking of. What's the one on the task view that lets you select text or images? Or is there another way to invoke the "select text or images on the screen" functionality?

[-] limerod@reddthat.com 1 points 19 hours ago

You could use something like tasker or another floating gesture app to trigger Circle To Search.

But either way that's not the function I was thinking of. What's the one on the task view that lets you select text or images? Or is there another way to invoke the "select text or images on the screen" functionality?

That's the Select function in overview on Pixel smartphone. You would need the Pixel Launcher for this function. But, it may or may not work in GrapheneOS

[-] catloaf@lemm.ee 1 points 19 hours ago

Hmm... I don't think it's part of the pixel launcher, because I've been using it with Lawnchair for years. I've installed the pixel launcher and it hasn't shown up as an option again yet.

[-] limerod@reddthat.com 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Hmm... I don't think it's part of the pixel launcher, because I've been using it with Lawnchair for years.

Your default system launcher is responsible for the recents screen. That's the reason you notice jank, bugs less smooth animations when using 3rd party launchers.

I've installed the pixel launcher and it hasn't shown up as an option again yet.

It needs to be integrated in your system for it to work. Plus, you may need additional google apps for the text recognition and selection function. You can ask the GrapheneOS developers for this feature. They may be able to do something at the System level.

[-] catloaf@lemm.ee 2 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

That doesn't seem to be true, because I just set the default launcher to the pixel launcher, and it didn't change at all. Maybe it is just an integration thing. Maybe if I use regular Play services instead of the sandboxed one.

Edit: never mind, that doesn't seem possible. Oh well, I can live without it.

Edit2: apparently the app I installed was not the Pixel launcher app, because it's not available as a separate app.
