My first full time job was for Ameristar Casino Council Bluffs. I can say this: see all that fancy stuff? They built it with your money. They don’t need more of it.

The ATM is the most manipulative machine on the casino floor.

$10 fee to withdraw $20? That’s 50%! Better bump it up to $40 so you get a better deal. And while you’re at it, $60 sounds even safer.

Knowing this ahead of time, you might hit a branch ATM on the way, but now you’ve just moved the dilemma: How much is enough to make sure you don’t pay a single fee?

Hard to correctly anticipate if you’re going as a group and don’t know how long you’ll spend on the floor or what games they like to play etc.

So once again you’re incentivized to overestimate and load up on cash. And if you do end up going to the ATM despite this, you better believe you’re gonna “make it worth it” even more than before.

The only time I went to a casino I went on with 20€, left with around 26€.

Now I have a good incentive to never step in a casino again, this way all my life I can keep the achievement to never have lost money at a casino.

You defeat it by deciding how much you're willing to lose before you leave for the casino, taking only that much cash, and leaving all of your cards at home. Consider any money you take to the casino lost already, before you even walk through the door. If you can't do these things, then you have no business in a casino. Obviously people without gambling compulsions don't need to take these preventative steps, since they're fine having their cards on them and not withdrawing more money to donate to rich casino owners.
