When a political leader makes statements like these, they should be taken seriously. Even if they're just kidding. Our sovereignty is no joke. Right now everyone is on edge with what he says he might do since it could jeopardize the peace and economic balance between allied countries. Things like tariffs could seriously impact the economy and throw everyone into a really deep depression.

I don't like defending Bush II. But this particular case, you could see him switch gears in real time to prevent the "shame on me" sound bite. Say what you want about the rest of his policies and actions but this bit was an intelligent political move even if it did make him look a little dumb.
American here. Many of us also don't understand. It's baffling and absolutely depressing. Far too many voting Americans are the kind of people who would happily destroy their own property to avoid sharing it. These are also usually the same people who believe in American exceptionalism above all else, despite our country being measurably worse than several others in a number of categories. They're insufferable.

Yeah I know how that played out. Americans are still fools. Democrats had a choice between a younger intelligent candidate and a liar, fraud, rapist, child molester, sociopathic old man.
