Summary

A rift has emerged within Donald Trump’s MAGA base over immigration, sparked by his appointment of Indian-born entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan as AI adviser.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy defended hiring high-skilled foreign workers, emphasizing the need for global talent in tech, while far-right figures like Laura Loomer and Matt Gaetz criticized the move as anti-MAGA.

The debate reflects deeper divisions between Trump’s traditional anti-immigration stance and his recent openness to legal immigration for skilled graduates, signaling potential conflicts within his incoming administration.

I don't fucking get it.

These are discussions that should be happening before there is a fucking election.

All these "freedom-loving" people who blindly vote for someone and give him carte blanche. That's not freedom.

[-] DrFistington@lemmy.world 8 points 22 hours ago

They're fucking idiots. The best Trump could do before the election was to say he had 'concepts of a plan'. Any intelligent person would hear that and immediately full stop and say 'holy shit, this guy is clueless and without any plan whatsoever'

Of course to the MAGAt it means ' oh the plan must be so good he can't even tell us about it'

You thought the tax cheat that screws over his workers and well, everyone but himself, was going to work in your best interest? There's only one cure for MAGAts

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 3 points 20 hours ago

They voted for slogans not policy.

At least those who bothered to vote at all.

It's not complicated; you say whatever you need to get elected in politics. Once elected, only money and a distant second, reelection, matters.

In this battle we have money against stupid racists. Guess which one the administration will serve? They'll wrap it up by doubling down on MX wall height or something retarded; it will be the first of many shit sandwiches Trump will stuff down his voters throats to their unending surprise.

Edit: well that didn't take long - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/dec/28/trump-musk-h1b-visas

shoot/vote first, ask/read on the issues later.

the majority of Americans (trump voters and those who didn't vote at all) seem to be a bit stupid.

[-] WaxiestSteam69@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

That line of thinking would be valid if anyone was interested in policy. Trump is only interested in two things- 1) getting elected and 2) getting revenge. He used Musk to get elected and now they have different priorities. This happened in his first administration.

Trump is only interested in two things- 1) getting elected and 2) getting revenge.

1a) staying out of jail

[-] WaxiestSteam69@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

You are correct

[-] Xianshi@lemm.ee 27 points 1 day ago

Give them pistols and have them duel it out.

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 5 points 22 hours ago

And make sure they're engineered to fire backward.

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 20 points 1 day ago

The Trumpets saying more H1B visas is anti-MAGA are all the ones without real power. Lara Loomer and Matt Gaetz have no real political power, or money. And what does Banon have other than some earned favors? So as much as I like the infighting, it's clear the result will be a consolidation of mouth pieces to the MAGA base.

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Maybe Loomer will slash her own tires in retribution against herself again.

[-] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 9 points 1 day ago

Still one of the funniest things ever. For anyone that doesnt get the reference.

[-] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 5 points 1 day ago

Also, as much as Trump controls them, to an extent. His possibility for election (constitutional crisis not withstanding) is gone, so his power diminishes from an election point of view.

[-] futatorius@lemm.ee 2 points 22 hours ago

And in two years, they won't even let him be seen in public because of how far his already broken mental state will have degenerated. He'll be eating snacks from his Depends.

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 2 points 1 day ago

Normalcy is for Democratic losers. I don't expect "lame duck" to play out in normal ways for this incoming administration.

[-] sheogorath@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I just hope that they’ll be just too busy with their infighting to actually do some permanent lasting damage.

[-] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 1 points 1 day ago

Neither do I, but part of trumps appeal for other Republicans is that he can bring votes. He might in 2 years, unlikely in 4, so the calculus has changed in terms of benefits of loyalty.

However it's clear you're not actually discussing in good faith, so I'll leave it there. Enjoy politics as a sport. You're making the world worse.

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 3 points 1 day ago

Whatever, I'm just saying don't expect to win tomorrow's game with yesterday's rules. If that's a bad faith argument, so be it.

[-] WatDabney@fedia.io 22 points 1 day ago

How is anyone caught off guard by this?

The Republican strategy for at least the 50 or so years that I've been aware enough to pay attention has exactly and explicitly been to get the base all riled up with brazenly racist anti-immigrant rhetoric, make lots noise and spends lots of money intercepting/deporting some number of people, but ensure that enough still get/stay in, and are desperate enough, to meet the business demand for cheap and exploitable labor.

Trump and his cultists have been extra hateful and extra loud, but aside from that, this is all just business as usual.

[-] Linktank@lemmy.today 23 points 1 day ago

Eat eachother alive!

[-] killea@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

There's no feud. This is just the general type of cognitive dissonance you get when you combine relentless hateful messaging with the fact that the moneyed class don't believe any of it. Cheap labor is obviously more important, so the propaganda people will keep up the hate/fear, while perhaps there won't be quite as many round-ups as we thought.

Edit: Feel the need to add I think these headlines depicting "fueds" are obnoxiously disingenuous.

I'm critical of it too, but not for the same reason as Loomer and Gaetz. My problem with it isn't that it hurts America, but that helps America TOO much. If all of the best and brightest are coming to the US, they're leaving their nations of origin, depleting the talent pool of those nations. It leaves those nations disadvantaged relative to the US, and it's not fair for the US to have that advantage, because we are already the world's dominant economic superpower. We can't keep taking resources (in this case labor and intellectual resources) from poorer nations, to help generate profit for our wealthy elite.

[-] TachyonTele@lemm.ee -4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Things being "not fair" is the thought process of children. The sooner you stop believing in it the sooner you'll be better off in life.

Edit. Not attacking you at all, just pointing it out.

[-] audaxdreik@pawb.social 9 points 1 day ago

I was brought up on this harsh truth by my parents just like a lot of people, I assume, but I no longer believe it.

Sure, I believe we all owe it to ourselves and others to put hard work into the system, but there should be an inherent sense of fairness (or call it equality if you will, I don't want to get bogged down in the tedium of definitions right now). If the system is unfair, we should be working to make it more fair. It's not satisfactory to simply leave it as it is, broken, and tell everyone else to deal with it when they may not have the resources to do so.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I say I refuse. I do not believe.

[-] meyotch@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

I agree.

Fairness and Justice are human concepts, not natural laws, therefore not guaranteed. But they can be built into our systems and into our collective values.

What kind of world do we want to build?

[-] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Equality, yes. That's a different thing.

[-] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

My life is fine, thank you.

[-] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

I didn't say otherwise.

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 6 points 1 day ago

I love watching them rip each other apart.
