I don't quite get it. You wanted a sequel for one movie, therefore you should be fine with "a year of sequels, remakes and regurgitated crap"?

[-] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 53 points 2 days ago

No, but it shouldn't be surprising that there are a ton of sequels and remakes when even the people who complain about there being too many sequels and remakes are asking for them.

They were just pointing out the irony.

[-] Acinonyx@lemmy.sdf.org 25 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

>if you want only one sequel of a specific movie, you're not allowed to dislike sequels in general

[-] kameecoding@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Exactly, because everyone wants one sequel for something, so there is no sequel where nobody asked for it, except for Jarhead

I feel like a sequel to memento would be good so we can finally discover what happened before the big bang

[-] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I don't think they really wanted a sequel to that movie, I think they were just saying it teased a bunch of interesting stuff in its trailer but then never actually did any of that stuff in its plot, probably because the producers wanted to make everyone buy a ticket to a Battle Angel sequel that never happened, which is just another facet of how the film industry's obsession with sequels and fictional universes is leading to the downward spiral they talk about in their other comment

It honestly feels like this post was put together by an LLM that just saw the word "sequel" in two different sentences but didn't have any ability to read context and just figured it must be ironic

[-] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

If they want another movie to continue the story, they want a sequel.

Some sequels are good, like the Lord of the Rings trilogy which includes two sequels because the whole story has a lot to it. Some sequels are bad, because they continue an already completed story and may even retcon some of the original story.

They want good sequels, not bad sequels. They still wanted a sequel.

[-] kemsat@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Then it shouldn’t be surprising that other people might want sequels to other movies, and therefore many movies being released are going to be sequels

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 5 points 2 days ago

There are very few things that are truly black and white in this world, most are shades of grey. If you deal in absolutes, you are lying to yourself, everyone else, or are probably a Sith.

Lemmy moment

[-] Zagorath@aussie.zone 68 points 2 days ago

That comment reads to me more like criticism of the original Alita than genuine desire for a sequel. It's saying "this film was all setup, no payoff".

[-] DudeImMacGyver@sh.itjust.works 21 points 2 days ago

It kinda was IMO

[-] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah they wrote it as a trilogy, with a big ass cliffhanger. They had Edward Norton as the overarching villain, as the other poster mentioned, but didn't even utilize him. The plot was meant to follow the manga, so people at least had some idea of what was to come.

[-] FeelzGoodMan420@eviltoast.org 4 points 2 days ago

Was that movie supposed to ever have a sequel? I have no idea what the point of edward nortan's ambiguous villain character even was? Was there a sequel planned and then they canned it? Overall the movie jjust made zero sense.

[-] MrEff@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

Yes, it was supposed to have a sequel. It was the start of a franchise that never became one. The OP of the OP is not wrong in saying it was a setup and wanted a sequel. The difference of this movie versus the slop of other sequels is this one was made to be one. It wasn't based on some one-off movie that did well, so the studio demanded a followup to milk it for more money. From its inception this movie was supposed to have one.

[-] Zagorath@aussie.zone 1 points 2 days ago

Oh, that's interesting. I had thought the OOP (N.B., that's short for "original OP" and is a fair bit shorter & clearer than "the OP of the OP") was criticising the movie for doing a poor job of paying off its plot. But actually perhaps it was more of a genuine wish than I thought?

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 9 points 2 days ago

Imagine if the original Star Wars movie ends right before they send out the X-Wings to attack the Death Star. That's sort of how Alita felt. It's been a while and I only saw it once, but basically she is trying to get to this "upper city" area to compete in some sort of battle race thing. It ends as soon as she gets up there basically.

[-] Zagorath@aussie.zone 2 points 2 days ago

I never saw it myself. I was just interpreting the comment from the OOP.

[-] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 43 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Just read the fucking manga then for fucks sake!

The story literally already fucking exists.

It's literally the definition of regurgitated crap because it's not an original story by any means.

Also, inb4 "but I don't want spoilers for the movie." If your story can be ruined by knowing some plot points, it's not a very good story to begin with.

[-] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago

The manga also makes very little sense, but yeah

[-] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

What do you mean the giant space dick fighting grey goo doesn't make any sense?

[-] exu@feditown.com 1 points 22 hours ago

But that's a different manga, technically.

[-] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

I mean you gotta continue the full storyline.

[-] HollowNaught@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

"But I dony want spoilers for the movie"

"...[therefore they have] not a very good story"

I guess every second season of anime has a bad plot

[-] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

I literally had no idea it was a manga. How was anyone supposed to know without being told explicitly first?

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 49 points 2 days ago

OP, did you see the movie? It is set up for a big race thing that never happens. It essentially ends on a cliff hanger.

[-] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 days ago

Yeah the whole thing was written to be a trilogy. But James Cameron was too busy with Avatar.

[-] Doom@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 days ago

this is the most interested I've been in this movie should I watch it

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

👁️👄👁️

Joke explanationAlita has big ol' eyes and it was a meme to use that emoji combo lol.

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago

FWIW, Cameron confirmed Alita 2 & 3 are in the works as of last year.

https://screenrant.com/alita-battle-angel-2-development-confirmed-james-cameron/

Considering how much post production these film would need, and suffering absolutely no delays, I expect these films to come out in 2026 & 2028, respectively.

Cowards, should adapt the remaining 6 1/2 volumes, 19 volumes of the sequel and 11 volumes of the prequel.

[-] Manzas@lemdro.id 3 points 1 day ago

The guy just wanted to get an end to a cliffhanger.

[-] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

For real though. Ed Norton teed up a great villain in the first movie. As a general rule, if he’s in the cast, then I’m watching.

Almost as if they're not going to die on this hill, how dare they ask for something they want

[-] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I also work with project managers who also want things one day, then want the opposite thing another day.

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

It annoys me that gamers always ask for something new, and then only get excited during Game Awards/E3 when they think a trailer is for some kind of sequel.

“Oh. Prince of the Urban Night? A creative new world inspired by yada-yada…darn. I thought it’d be Half Life 3.”

[-] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 days ago
[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 3 points 2 days ago

Oof, that hurt. I miss dedicated servers.

[-] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 1 points 2 days ago

I mean, I'd love an ABA sequel.
