Oh noes! Won't anybody have pity on the poor woman who never had any problem with being married to one of the greatest mass murderers of recent history?

[-] essell@lemmy.world 44 points 5 days ago

From what I hear, she was no passive beneficiary, making decisions and actively participating in the regime's crimes.

There's thousands of people out there with cancer who can't get the best care, or even adequate care. I hope no one is foolish enough to make her a priority

[-] nightwatch_admin@feddit.nl 53 points 6 days ago

What is everyone having for dinner today?

[-] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 22 points 6 days ago

Actually, a really nice Dahl as I'm getting over a recent sickness.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

I can't eat solid food (it's a long story that I'm sure many people are sick of), but I have Amy's Golden Lentil dahl almost every day. I love it.

[-] Mr_Blott@feddit.uk 7 points 5 days ago

Amy must be fuckin starving

I scared my cat from laughing too hard at this

Mustard glazed pork chops and fettuccine Alfredo with spinach.

(Really, SwiftKey??)

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 days ago

Mustard-glazed pork chops sounds amazing. I'm gonna need an update on this one.

Ah, Swiftkey just wanted something themselves, that’s okay.
Weird that you have different votes in your view though, I see 27 up, 2 down.

Edit: wait, geico is insurance? Be safe op, Swiftkey may be warning you….

Vegan miso vite ramen with kimchi and a spicy ginger beer

Celebrated a bday today, so I got to have Cioppino, and then ~~Creme Brulee~~ Crème brûlée* for dessert

[-] telllos@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Crème brûlée doesn't taste the same without the accents.

We had nice Chinese food including braised pork belly, followed by some Christmas pudding. It was great!

[-] TransplantedSconie@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago

My wife made an amazing spiral cut ham with sauteed green bean and mashed taters.

[-] Stovetop@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

A bit early for New Year's, but I wanted to try a recipe for yi mein that I think came out pretty good.

[-] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 2 points 5 days ago

I'm wife's hometown and we're meeting her childhood friends in a few hours at an izakaya for sushi, fish, and all sorts of stuff. Please have a moment of silence for my liver this weekend.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 2 points 5 days ago

Macarona bashamel (long story, but it's good and you should try it) with a dash of dictator tears.

After reading the article, she is in Russia. I'm sure she will receive the best care moscow has to offer, which is still better than a lot of people.

[-] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 23 points 5 days ago

That's true. Russia does have really good doctors - if you have money. And you have to be able to withstand yelling and belittling but as a Russian you get used to that.

[-] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

How many Blyats does the average Russian medical chart contain?

[-] Siegfried@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

A friend of mine is truggling with that. I wouldn't have thought that Moscow's health care was so shitty. I was for some reason expecting the opposite.

[-] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope they find some qualified care soon. Is the problem the access (money, status) or can't they find proper treatment for other reasons?

[-] TotalFat@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

There was a great show about Russian healthcare a while back. Can't recall the name, but it had Jon Hamm and Harry Potter in it.

[-] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 3 points 5 days ago

A young doctor's notebook - based on a Russian novel from Michael Bulgakov. I'm so sad they discontinued it 😭 I think about it once a week at least!

But it takes place around WWI, so... Not exactly a 1:1 portrayal of Russian medicine today

[-] yournamehere@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago

what was it..138billion dollars that assad transferred to russia on the day he fled? should do.

[-] volvoxvsmarla@lemm.ee 4 points 5 days ago

That's a perverted amount of money. But yeah that should do.

So it's not like she is being denied treatment. She is being denied a specific treatment in a specific prestigious clinic in Britain. But honestly, Russians can cure cancer just as well ( - provided you have the money to pay them). Moscow has prestigious clinics and great resources. I'd much rather get treatment there than in some rural British hospital to be honest.

To be blunt, I struggle to muster absolutely any sympathy for the significant other of an authoritarian dictator.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 34 points 6 days ago

Do they not have cancer treatment centers in Russia or Iran?

Awe shucks...Kudos to the UK for denying her entry.

[-] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 18 points 5 days ago

Oh no, I seem to have misplaced my tiny violin.

[-] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

Why is dying in quotes? She has cancer... she's kinda dying, not 'dying'.

[-] splinter@lemm.ee 5 points 5 days ago

It’s in quotes because the headline is quoting a source rather than reporting information that the newspaper has evaluated themselves.

[-] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

ah, that makes sense. Thanks.

[-] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 13 points 5 days ago

holds both British and Syrian citizenship

lol, not anymore. Stateless guest of Russia now.

[-] Notserious@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago

Oh no…

Anyway

[-] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 days ago

Why not accept her, treat her, and try her for her crimes?

[-] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 8 points 5 days ago

Has she actually committed any crimes? Yeah, she's married to a dictator who did but did she have any actual political power or responsibility herself?

[-] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

I've read that she was personally involved in the brutality. Wikipedia gives some details and sources.

I wondered this too, but she's already in Moscow. Any care she can receive there, is still equal to or better than what the average Russian can get.
