You get: *social media addiction because our algorithms are built to keep you scrolling
Fuck your nightmare fuel! I'm not even mad, you did such an amazing job.
Bob Ross got fame, the good feeling of teaching something, a job where he just paints calmly for a living, he got a good life out of it.
He got an entire art supply empire with franchises that sold painting courses (and maybe still do?).
I think he also got screwed out of most of the proceeds and possibly even the use of his own name because he had a shady business partner.
That's not true the users get fed a constant bullshit via a constant pipeline
I get data, you get incorrect data
Not to mention brand new mental illnesses! 😄
Yeah, how much are the services of an algorithm geared toward maximizing outrage worth?! Gotta be something!
Come on, that's not fair. We get some things:
My neighbor got robbed when she posted about being away on holiday. What an experience!
And there was that time that some users had private messages made public due to a security glitch. I'm sure that ended more than a few relationships!
We get mass surveillance -- that's a pretty good one, yeah?... No?
Hey, don't forget the addiction and self esteem issues. Social media does much more!
Right side You Get: Disinformation, Abuse, And a host that is demonstrably leaning into a dictatorship.
And Jan.6th. Jan.6th was orchestrated with the help of Facebook groups.
Why did you forget the main perk of it: social anxiety.
Bob Ross is a hero and must be celebrated as such. Fuck Zuck with a cactus.
No cactus deserves that
Use a hackle instead
I will say, he did get to paint on TV and know that maybe somewhere someone was better off for knowing he existed.
Bob Ross absolutely got something. Something worth more than any sum of gold.
Of course, he must've gotten a sense of accomplishment from this.
When I contribute to an open source project I get the same feeling too. I can even brag about it during interviews. But, It's not why I do it. I learnt a lot from open source projects and I am just paying it forward. What I got from these projects is more than what I am able to contribute to.
But, Life is not a zero-sum game. We don't have to do things in exact proportions. That would make it a business transaction. Bob Ross definitely gave a lot to his viewers. In my eyes, that makes him a hero.
sending this to my friend in dubai
Funny, but like, nobody would use Facebook if it was literally just a blank page.
The "nothing" means "nothing good".
I use Facebook for a lot of hobby stuff. I look for hobby communities on Lemmy in the same categories but they’re way smaller and less active. I wish everyone would move to Lemmy but there’s a barrier to entry which isn’t the case for Facebook.
Don't be afraid to evangelize! If someone seems really disappointed with Facebook, introduce them to Lemmy! The main barrier to entry is teaching them what an instance is.
Facebook Marketplace is pretty good though, at least in the US. All other Facebook features are rubbish
