I'm not afraid to ask, but haven't yet received a convincing answer either.

[-] Zeus@lemm.ee 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

i don't hate webp. i think png is better, but i think webp is fine

but i really don't want google to have more control over how i browse the internet.^[especially given how they've recently shown that they will abuse their monopoly] let's maybe use an image format that isn't owned by them, perhaps

[-] MonkderZweite@feddit.ch 0 points 1 year ago

I rather look at the licenses.

[-] Zeus@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

i think that's irrelevant. sure, webp might be open licence, but so is chromium to some extent and that's doing severe damage to internet health

that said, apart from "it's an open format", i can't actually find any definitive answer on the webp licence

[-] Zeus@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago

oh i know, i'm very pro jxl. but i was more saying why i don't like webp even if it is open-licence

[-] junezephier@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 year ago

Idk they're less compatible with editing software? I don't think photoshop supports it by default Sucks when you just want to make a quick meme, and google serves you a webp version of a file that has png in the filename, lol

[-] konata_izumi@ani.social 2 points 1 year ago

lol. I don't use Photoshop but just reading this I'm convinced it's just Adobe being a little kid and jealous of Google for developing a good compressed format, otherwise adding support for it would be so easy for them that they could just add it in a point release and not even bat an eye (since webp is free and open and all that stuff)

[-] d_k_bo@feddit.de 5 points 1 year ago

I don't hate webp. I think JPEG-XL is awesome and I hate that Google prefers to work on webp over jxl.

[-] JargonWagon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I thought for a second that this meme would have been uploaded in .webp for the lulz, but alas after downloading the image to my phone and then going into the properties, it's jpg.

[-] vox@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

webp and webm are genuinely pretty good, they work really well for web pages/for transmitting over the network.
jxl is better but support for it is crap

[-] CookieJarObserver@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago

Mine can be printed out and read by a blind person!

[-] joyjoy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Finally, ASCII art on mobile that isn't completely mangled.

[-] AccSwtch50@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

How wide is your mobile? It's mangled on mine.

Edit: When the ascii art comment is the top most comment, it isn't mangled I guess.

[-] joyjoy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I'm on Voyager, but it works fine on the normal website was well.

[-] Odo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

It's wonky on desktop, however. The lines double up much like it does on Reddit.

[-] mashbooq@infosec.pub 7 points 1 year ago

Disappointed to discover that the image in the post is WebP

[-] d_k_bo@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago
[-] Achyu@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It seems that both Jerboa and Android Firefox(stable/regular version) can't display jxl, currently.

[-] ryannathans@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Motherfuckers only discovering webp now avif is out

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Shame on Google killing the support on Chrome for fuck all reason

[-] PancakedWaffle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Fr I’m sick of having to open preview and export to use images I download in other places. Bout to just start screenshotting instead of downloading.

[-] CoderKat@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

I like the idea of webp. But ugh it's annoying that I can't easily share it. My main way to communicate with some folks I'm close with is Messenger and it doesn't support webp. So to send people funny pictures, I have to screenshot and crop.

[-] JudahBenHur@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

theres a firefox extention to save webp as png or jpg, when you right click a webp, you can then select "save webp as" and then pick jpg/png

[-] poplargrove@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Webop. Who decided to place the little camera there.

[-] Andrew15_5@mander.xyz 0 points 1 year ago

Is this just a fancy way to write "webp" and "jpeg" (extra large)?

[-] reallynotnick@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Fancy? As in are these the logos for Webp and JPEG XL? Then yes, these are logos.

JPEG XL is a new image format that has better compression and more features like HDR over JPEG.

[-] rekliner@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

And layers. And animation. And it's not patented by Google

Fek google and its avif. JPEG XL is much efficient

[-] ryannathans@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Avif is av1 based, open and free.

[-] mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

JPEG-XL is open and free aswell! I am talking about efficiency. It takes much less space for the same image with no quality loss

I could easily find this online but is there a reason for the sudden shift?

[-] yote_zip@pawb.social 0 points 1 year ago

[-] BloodSlut@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Everyone's issues with WebP are actually issues with anything around WebP

I used to hate WebP but then installed qt5 image formats something or other and i can now view WebP same as any other standad image type.

[-] mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

I don't think this is simply WebP hate but its about Jpeg-XL superiority. It is a very new codec with very efficient compression

[-] Ddhuud@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

Coll, cool. What about atents and royalties?

[-] mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 year ago

Free and open

[-] KLISHDFSDF@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago

what OS are you using? Is this a windows thing?

[-] BloodSlut@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Arch with Plasma 5

[-] reddig33@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

Another year, another image format. Really unnecessary.

[-] JshKlsn@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

My website uses webp because my images go from 5MB down to 100KB with no quality loss.

My wallet and slow internet users thank me. Plus my website isn't meant for people to save images. Not sure why you'd be saving images of my products.
