Help! I'm getting screen tearing in the new twitter!
I feel like Y should be the successor to X.
Whyland doesn't sound as good though.
Like this one that never took off? https://www.y-windows.org/
Do you mean like X, Why?, Z
You made me check my zipper.
file-roller?
No, zypper. Package manager.
they do NOT get the joke!!!1!!
The X window system is actually the successor to the W window system.
There actually was a short-lived attempt to create a Y window system as a successor to X (before Wayland).
Funnily enough the website is still live, despite no progress in almost 20 years: https://y-windows.org
Ahhh I can see the graphical glitches already
Can someone please ELI5 this to me? Everyone seems to get it (as a joke?) but me.
Ooh, it's the logo, god damn it, got it 2 secconds after posting this.
Just in case anyone else stumbles across this and is confused, I'll explain in more detail.
On Linux there are two display server protocols, the very old X11 and the newer Wayland, which was designed as a successor to X11 by its maintainers.
Elon Musk announced today that he is renaming Twitter to X (yes, just X). The above posts takes the mick out of this on this by announcing a social media website called Wayland, i.e. the successor to Musk's X.
Like Weyland-Yutani?

Community rules (click to expand)
1. Follow the site-wide rules
- Instance-wide TOS: https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
- Lemmy code of conduct: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/code_of_conduct.html
2. Be civil
- Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
- Do not harrass or attack members of the community for any reason.
- Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
- Bigotry will not be tolerated.
- These rules are somewhat loosened when the subject is a public figure. Still, do not attack their person or incite harrassment.
3. Post Linux-related content
- Including Unix and BSD.
- Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of
sudo
in Windows. - No porn. Even if you watch it on a Linux machine.
4. No recent reposts
- Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
Please report posts and comments that break these rules!
Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't fork-bomb your computer.
