Is this supposed to be surprising

Who would share their wifi? That's just inviting someone to use it for nefarious things because they're not responsible for it.

everybody shared their WiFi before governments started passing laws to criminalize some connections and oblige ISPs to log all connections.

for years we were surrounded by open connections. Wifi could have been used differently :/

Hopefully it goes without saying that a VPN provider, like ExpressVPN, has a clear vested interest in the outcome of such a survey. On top of that, they don’t provide any information on how the study itself was actually conducted or by whom (i.e. take it with a big pinch of salt).

Um... wtf?

That’s not that surprising (besides the fact that it’s a VPN provider trying to convince people that they need their service). But the fact that you are fully liable for whatever your weirdo neighbor does on your WiFi is more than reason enough to not share it. You can do this „study“ anywhere in the world with comparable laws and you’ll get similar results.
