I had an intense love affair with this one earlier in the year that fizzled out quickly once the credits rolled. Solid game, but the only thing that keeps it from being in my collection of 1000-hour games is that it's a little too dense for my taste. Keeping track of what builds what (and which build I had currently unlocked) was taking up a smidge more brain power than I'd like once the difficulty started demanding it. By the end I'd started layering in how to evaluate cornerstones, the best way to do trade, map modifiers, and it became too much. Ironically, I'd probably get to a level of comfort just by putting more time into the game but it'll just feel like work.

One of those "almost there" games for me.

This is a dimension of the conversation I wish was talked about more. By linking strict norms to behavior in public, we're telling petite women of the age of majority that don't have curves that they can't ever be sexually attractive because it's extremely immoral and taboo. It's especially a problem for trans women who can't afford/don't want breast augmentation surgery or otherwise can't develop biological markers that we code as adult. Being told only pedophiles will be attracted to you is harmful to everyone involved.

[-] Ashtear@lemm.ee 18 points 8 months ago

It's all sheer greed, too. Paradox has fully embraced the model of releasing sequels with less content than their DLC-enhanced previous games after 2K showed the market had tolerance for it with Civilization. Considering how that already puts them ahead of the curve, it's amazing that Paradox let this game come out in this state.

[-] Ashtear@lemm.ee 19 points 9 months ago

Yep. I'm on lemm.ee and I don't even think about what content I might be missing.

[-] Ashtear@lemm.ee 18 points 9 months ago

Part of the concern is deceptive/astroturfed content developed as advertising showing up in Lemmy communities. While those same actors could theoretically be based on lemm.ee, that's a lot more work than simply scaling up operations when you're doing it on Threads anyway.

[-] Ashtear@lemm.ee 18 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Not entirely dissimilar from Lancelot in Arthurian legend is Genji from The Tale of Genji (11th century Japan). Genji was also the male ideal: attractive, charismatic, talented. And, of course, sleeping around and getting in trouble for it. The key difference is Lancelot had valor on the battlefield, whereas Genji did his battles in court politics.

When the pandemic effectively suspended E3, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft started producing direct videos. They haven't been interested in going back.

I'm sure someone will do a full postmortem write-up on E3, but with this sort of thing, there's a sort of inertia involved. Once something happens that pauses a regular gathering and makes everyone wonder "why were we doing this again?" there are times the gathering doesn't come back.

Atomix - Aldo López - Spanish - 90 / 100

If you like Persona 5 and all its spinoffs that have come out over the years, it is clear that Tactica should not be missing from your collection, especially if you are an enthusiast of strategy games.

But Why Tho? - Kyle Foley - 8.5 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is a great example of how to do a spin-off game right by balancing familiar components with a new approach. There is plenty to enjoy for new and old fans alike and everything is tied together in a package that is equal parts approachable and fulfilling.

CGMagazine - Brendan Frye - 6 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica, while trying some new things in the series ultimately falls flat. With a bland story and mediocre gameplay, I think its time we leave Joker and the gang alone.

COGconnected - Nicola Kapron - 75 / 100

All in all, Persona 5 Tactica is far from perfect. But it looks pretty sound, it sounds excellent, and it is fun. If you just want to see more of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, you could certainly do worse. And if you open your heart to the new cast, Erina and Toshiro have a lot going for them. Just be prepared to replay levels a lot on higher difficulties.

Checkpoint Gaming - Charlie Kelly - 8 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is another successful voyage for the Phantom Thieves. Little is better than the warm feeling inside of revisiting this cast of characters I've come to know so fondly and intimately in a new, but familiar style. There are small ways Atlus could've made this a more blown-out affair, but it's never too much of a bother when the game is this solid and satisfying to play.

Digital Trends - Jess Reyes - 3 / 5

Persona 5 Tactica's strategic elements are its highlights, but don't expect it to take your heart.

DualShockers - Peter Szpytek - 8 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica takes a while to really get going, but once it does, you'll have no choice but to stick around for the ride. DualShockers was provided with a copy of the game for review purposes.

Eurogamer - Henry Stockdale - 3 / 5

Persona 5 Tactica marks a welcome return for the Phantom Thieves, delivering a fun strategy spin-off with plenty of heart.

Everyeye.it - Antonello Bello - Italian - 8.3 / 10

Just like his Phantom Thieves, ATLUS isn't missing a beat, and against all odds, Persona 5 Tactica has proven to be a solid and enjoyable tactician.

Final Weapon - Raul Ochoa - 4 / 5

Persona 5 Tactica is a really fun RPG that brings interesting new characters, addicting gameplay, and a story that delivers lighthearted and dark themes alike. Although the game doesn't exactly move the Persona series forward in a substantial way, Persona 5 Tactica brings an intriguing twist to the gameplay systems that fans come to know and love in a well-rounded RPG that respects the player's time.

Game Rant - Shane Robert Moyer - 4 / 5

Atlus' Persona 5 Tactica drops the Phantom Thieves in a Medieval Europe-style world as they are dragged into an ongoing revolution by a mysterious figure. Rather than a traditional turn-based JRPG, the Persona 5 spin-off falls within the tactics genre.

GameBlast - Matheus Senna de Oliveira - Portuguese - 8.5 / 10

The new adventures of Joker and company in Persona 5 Tactica manage to mix turn-based RPG with strategy in a very competent way. Exuding style and an engaging story, especially thanks to its charismatic characters, each new mission and its developments are unmissable. In particular, I liked the great freedom in solving missions and their challenges. Although the title is not on the same level as the original game, its quality is undeniable and it certainly has a lot of fun and challenge to offer. Another mandatory release for fans of the series and a good choice for anyone who wants to start getting to know this unique universe.

Gamer Guides - Chris Moyse - 6.5 / 10

While die-hard Phantom Thieves will enjoy stepping into the Metaverse once again - as slick, stylish, and cool as it ever was - Persona 5 Tactica lacks variety, momentum, and challenge. Its key issue lies in a fatal lack of mechanical balance, resulting in an endearing but unsatisfying strategy experience.

GamesRadar+ - Rollin Bishop - 4 / 5

Persona 5 Tactica makes the most of combining Persona and tactics (as the name implies) together, forming a charming amalgamation out of the two for a surprisingly dense mechanical experience and powerful story that nevertheless loses something by omitting anything resembling side activities.

GamingTrend - Dalton McClain - 90 / 100

In summary, Persona 5 Tactica offers a great story with engaging factors, vibrant colors, dynamic art styles, new characters, and music. It masters a compelling story while also presenting older and nostalgic characteristics of Persona 5. With a fresh new coat of paint, Persona 5 Tactica is worth it to suit up as a Phantom Thief and liberate the worlds of the Metaverse.

God is a Geek - Lyle Carr - 9 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is a tactics game unlike any other, with really clever combat that requires a lot of thought and that Persona style we all love.

God is a Geek - Lyle Carr - 9 / 10

The Switch port of Persona 5 Tactica is absolutely wonderful, and it's a perfect game to play portably thanks to its lovely bite sized missions.

Hobby Consolas - Daniel Quesada - Spanish - 77 / 100

It won't satisfy everyone, but this twist on the Persona formula offers satisfactory moments and a gameplay that becomes more and more attractive with every mision.

IGN - Leana Hafer - 8 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is a big bag of bite-sized Phantom Thieves adventures that keeps the spirit of the series alive and shows that it can work great with a grid-based battle system.

IGN Italy - Alessandro Digioia - Italian - 7 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is the first game in the Persona 5 sub-series to make me wonder if we really needed to see the Phantom Thieves again. It's never bad, but it does feel pointless most of the times. The new story is just "more of the same" without any real twists, and the combat system, although pretty fun, lacks depth and isn't particularly challenging. Still, it menages to entertain for most of it's 30 hours duration.

IGN Spain - Esteban Canle - Spanish - 8 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica brings the Phantom Thieves back together for fans to enjoy in a strategy and role-playing game full of possibilities. A new opportunity to live adventures with Joker and his friends, this time leading a new revolution. On a negative note, it may fall short for those with a lot of experience in this type of games.

Nintendo Life - Mitch Vogel - 9 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is a thrillingly varied tactical RPG that fans of the Phantom Thieves and the genre should take note of. It's a little on the easy side, but the varied gameplay, excellent soundtrack, striking visuals, and lovable characters all make for a very easy recommendation here.

PC Invasion - Jack Salter - 10 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica seamlessly blends the SRPG genre with Persona 5. With combat mechanics that elevate the game and a story that ramps up to be enrapturing and heart-wrenching, Persona 5 Tactica is easily my favorite Persona spin-off, and I hope Atlus makes more SRPGs with this style of gameplay.

PSX Brasil - Thiago de Alencar Moura - Portuguese - 85 / 100

If you're a fan of the series, this is yet another spin-off that will please you quite a bit and introduce you to an addictive new genre.

Press Start - Harry Kalogirou - 7.5 / 10

It certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel, but offers a more than competent tactics experience within a framework that's sure to please any Persona fan.

Prima Games - Shaun Cichacki - 8 / 10

If you’re a fan of Persona, then it’s something you should at least consider giving a try, even if it may be time for the Phantom Thieves to retire into a quieter life altogether, finally.

Pure Xbox - PJ O'Reilly - 8 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is another very solid and self-assured spin-off for Atlus' stellar RPG franchise. Placing the Phantom Thieves in tactical turn-based battles works a treat here, with addictive and challenging strategy complimented by a slick sense of style, strong writing and a campaign narrative that will keep fans happy. Whether you're here for Persona specifically or you're just wanting a solid slice of tactical action to dig into, this one has got you well and truly covered.

Push Square - Liam Croft - 7 / 10

Joker and co have enjoyed a great run, but Persona 5 fatigue is well and truly beginning to set in.

RPG Fan - Ben Love - 75%

Persona 5 Tactica crafts an engaging personal narrative but falters in conveying its themes and delivering satisfying turn-based tactical combat.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Siobhán Casey - Unscored

A turn-based strategy 'em up with the Persona 5 gang that might be a bit too simplistic for some, and anime for others, but still makes for a nice excuse to hang with pals.

Screen Rant - Cody Gravelle - 4 / 5

Ultimately, Persona 5 Tactica is another fun spin-off that proves the depth of its source material. Persona 5 has successfully ported itself to the musou, rhythm, and tactical genres, all the while maintaining the charm and flash that made it so instantly recognizable. At this point, it would be weirder to see a genre that the series didn't successfully adapt itself to than one it does.

Siliconera - Jenni Lada - 8 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica shows the series can adapt well to strategy genre, as the game is largely entertaining and includes familiar concepts well.

Spaziogames - Gianluca Arena - Italian - 7.8 / 10

Despite being an enjoyable SRPG suitable for all age groups, thanks to five levels of difficulty and a challenge rate that is never really prohibitive even at the highest ones, Persona 5 Tactica is, on balance, the least brilliant product among those generated by the fame of the franchise and the talent of the minds within Atlus.

Stevivor - Steve Wright - 7.5 / 10

Highly stylised and easy enough to understand, though complex and demanding as all hell.

The Game Crater - Tom Wilson - 6 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica's deep turn-based mechanics and intriguing story are great, but it fails to live up to the very game it is based on.

The Games Machine - Nicholas Mercurio - Italian - 9 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is a passionate and better work in every light and nuance. Enriched by a detailed game design, defined at its best by many approaches that can be carried out at your preference, its greatest merit is to be linked to the original title and to involve, at the same time, with a strategic vision à la X-Com particularly successful. It's a video game you won't want to miss, full of nuances and things to do, as well as enriched by a moving story.

TheGamer - Stacey Henley - 3 / 5

Persona 5 Tactica is undone by the fact it's unsure if it's putting the Persona twist on the tactical grid game, or using Persona characters to introduce newcomers to the genre. Maps and missions are repetitive, the more interesting elements that each Persona brings are sanded off, and there's an overreliance on basic gun and melee attacks that don't suit the Phantom Thieves at all. But when it clicks, there is an unmistakable charm about the Phantom Thieves themselves, and drawn-out though they may be, the epic scale of the bosses is a good shake-up for the genre. It's not the perfect goodbye of Strikers, but it is a sign that the sun should set on the Phantom Thieves in peace.

TheSixthAxis - Nic Bunce - 7 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is a good game, but it is a game that's standing on the shoulders of giants – when the giant is the size of Satanael, you have a lot to live up to. Indeed, it's very difficult to score this and not compare it to the other games in the series as a result. Tactica is good, but it's not great, and while it is always nice to sink into that warm-bath feeling of hanging out with your fictional friends, it won't be remembered as either a series high or the best spin-off the franchise has to offer.

Twinfinite - Rowan Jones - 4.5 / 5

I’m not going to give much away here about the story because it is best to enjoy it as it unfolds. Let’s just say it is camp, surprising, and so much fun! It is clear Persona 5 Tactica was created for both old and new players alike, and I for one am grateful for that. I look forward to seeing what else the Persona series has to offer.

Wccftech - Francesco De Meo - 8.5 / 10

The narrative remains compelling, the characters charming, the presentation slick and the solid tactical rounds the package well, making the game an engaging experience from beginning to end. The game's low challenge level, however, and the established status of the Phantom Thieves limits its appeal to die-hard fans of the series.

WellPlayed - Nathan Hennessy - 6 / 10

Persona 5's toe-tapping tunes and infectious energy are present, but Tactica forgets to bring fresh ideas or variety.

WhatIfGaming - Hristijan Pavlovski - 9 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is a breath of fresh air for the turn-based tactics genre that feels familiar, yet challenging, and has enough depth to easily stand toe-to-toe with its peers. Despite the genre shift, it retains all the hallmarks of a Persona title and blends those aspects with dazzling polish. It's fun, challenging, a blast to play, and a must-have for any Persona fan, serving as a good entry point for strategy lovers looking to get into Persona.

Windows Central - Alexander Cope - 4 / 5

Persona 5 Tactica is an enjoyable Strategy RPG spin-off romp despite featuring a relatively run-of-the-mill 'good versus evil' storyline. The tactical gameplay elements are filled with exciting and engaging ideas alongside welcome quality-of-life improvements. If you're a die-hard Persona 5 fan who enjoys strategy games, you absolutely will get a kick out of Tactica. However, those looking for a serious challenge will likely find they breeze through the mostly undemanding combat.

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 8 / 10

Persona 5 Tactica is a fun attempt to bring the ideas and concepts behind Persona 5 into the tactical setting, but at times it can feel more like a proof of concept. The core gameplay is a lot of fun, the story is enjoyable, and it's a good game for Persona 5 fans. It suffers from the cast being so overexposed that it's difficult to get super excited to see them again, and the actual persona element feels a tad lackluster.

Xbox Achievements - Dan Webb - 82%

Persona 5 Tactica is a wonderful take on isometric turn-based tactical games like XCOM, that is good enough to satiate Persona fans, and maybe even win over a few XCOM fans at the same time.

Us space sim types would tell you it took a few steps back as far as genre standards go. And I wasn't even expecting much on that side of it.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is much more than a visual remake of the PlayStation classic. Gemdrops reworked a lot of the gameplay system and also aded tons of quality of life improvements that resulted in a better game than the original. A 2023 surprise, no doubt.

CGMagazine - Chris De Hoog - 8.5 / 10

Star Ocean The Second Story R is a lovingly-crafted remaster of a golden age RPG that offers a replayable and approachably complex adventure.

Cerealkillerz - Julian Bieder - German - 8.8 / 10

If anyone says that 90s role-playing games are out of date these days, should take a hard look at Star Ocean: The Second Story. With the help of stunning 2.5D graphics and a few small improvements to the combat system and other gameplay mechanics, the title shines as The Second Story R in a splendour that rivals any other current RPG of the year. The depth of the original game, including side activities, take care of the rest

Checkpoint Gaming - Charlie Kelly - 8.5 / 10

Star Ocean: The Second Story R serves as a reminder from Square Enix that this is an RPG property not to be ignored. On offer is one of the most enjoyable of its genre I've played in some time with a heartfelt story, colourful cast, and a wonderful fusion of both fantasy and science fiction goodness. The quality doesn't end there, though. Deep leveling and specialistion systems make for meaningful refining of your party, becoming more self-sufficient the further along you get. This complements some battle encounters that are deeper than many other RPGs on the market, always keeping you on your toes. One or two quality-of-life additions that could've been better implemented aren't a worry for long when you also consider how gorgeous the world of Expel really is, with its characters popping off your screen. A killer title to convert newcomers and satiate longtime fans, this remake is one for all and all for one. Star Ocean forever.

Console Creatures - Bobby Pashalidis - Essential

Star Ocean The Second Story R is what a remake should be — a project that finely tunes and updates the original. The attention to detail, the upgraded environments, and the changes to the combat deliver an incredible experience.

Destructoid - Andrea Shearon - 9 / 10

Star Ocean: The Second Story R recaptures all the otherworldly wonder of its PlayStation predecessor. The rough edges of the original are now smooth to the touch, and the enhanced visuals amplify that classic pixel art aesthetic in a way that few remakes pull off. It’s a thoughtful snapshot encapsulating RPGs of the era, retaining all the passion and whimsy I remember so fondly. I loved this look back at Star Ocean‘s past, and I hope this marks a new beginning for the series’ future.

Digital Chumps - Ben Sheene - 9 / 10

Star Ocean The Second Story R may well serve as the blueprint going forward if Square Enix or any other developer wishes to remake games from this classic era of RPGs. An unquestionably gorgeous art style uplifts all modern touches, breathing life into a 25-year-old game.

Everyeye.it - Antonello Bello - Italian - 8 / 10

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a must-buy for anyone who loved tri-Ace's masterpiece, as well as an unmissable opportunity for any newbies to discover one of the best action RPGs of the 90s.

Final Weapon - Payne Grist - 4.5 / 5

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a masterfully done remake. The goal envisioned by the creators was to bring a classic game up to modern sensibilities, and they have truly outdone themselves. Star Ocean: The Second Story R takes the masterfully crafted systems of the original game, combines them with the updates from Star Ocean: Second Evolution, and wraps them up in a gorgeous and smooth package. Any qualms that can be found lie within things like the story and characters, which remain true to the original game. However, the ease of play, deep RPG elements, strong story theming, and revamped battle system more than makeup for any issues I have. Please, I implore you, to check out this absolutely astounding game.

GameSpot - George Yang - 8 / 10

Star Ocean: The Second Story R strikes a good balance of retro and modernity with its throwback visuals and new combat mechanics.

GamingTrend - David Flynn - 70 / 100

Star Ocean The Second Story R is a wildly inconsistent package, with the ending portions falling off greatly in quality, but still a mostly fun game. Battle and its surrounding systems can have a lot of variation depending on your party and how you choose to play. However, it lacks polish in many areas making it very difficult to want to finish.

Hey Poor Player - Kenny McKee - 4.5 / 5

Star Ocean The Second Story R is a true treat for both series veterans and newcomers alike, going far beyond the scope of traditional remakes and bringing The Second Story to a brand-new, and completely wonderful, level.

Kakuchopurei - Jonathan Leo - 80 / 100

Coupled with an inviting HD-2D look that combines pixel art and 3D graphics that really invites you to play/replay it for copious amounts of time, this Star Ocean remake is worth diving into. If you crave 90s JRPG action with a lot of unlockables and power-up options, optional party members with backstories to uncover, and fast-paced combat, Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a no-brainer that will get you into its scifi hooks.

MonsterVine - Frank Wood - 4.5 / 5

They really did do a great job with this one, creating something fans of the game can fall back in love with, as well as creating what might be the best jumping-off point for new fans of the series. As I said earlier, I had NO intentions of going in as deep with this game as I did before I started writing, but here I am already wanting to go back to do some end/post-game things just because it was so enjoyable. This is a worthy entry into any RPG fans’ collection, and it does the original release great justice.

Nintendo Life - Mitch Vogel - 9 / 10

In a year overflowing with outstanding new RPGs, Star Ocean: The Second Story R is among the very best of them. This revival of a PlayStation classic does a thorough job of mixing modern game design and artistic elements with old-school sensibilities to make for one of the most impressive RPG releases of 2023. A lengthy, player-driven story, thrilling combat system, gorgeous new visual style, and remixed soundtrack all come together to make this one of the easiest recommendations we can make to any RPG fan. If you're even vaguely interested in picking this up, we'd encourage you to do so as soon as you can; Star Ocean: The Second Story R is comfortably the best entry in this series.

NintendoWorldReport - Neal Ronaghan - 8.5 / 10

It's an enjoyable action RPG with a wealth of player choice and a lot of charming quirky aspects. If you've ever been curious about Star Ocean and have an affinity for old-school action RPGs, this is a must-play. Even beyond that, the beautiful presentation might be worth the price of admission by itself.

One More Game - Chris Garcia - Buy

Star Ocean The Second Story R is a superb remake that takes an already content-heavy game and further improves the adventure with meaningful additions that enhance the experience by a wide margin. From simple quality-of-life conveniences to added crafting and customizing depth, Star Ocean The Second Story R does not disappoint.

Despite launching in between big releases, Star Ocean The Second Story R is a fantastic RPG experience that shouldn’t be overlooked. Fans of the original will be pleased with the breadth and scope that the remake offers, while newcomers can use this as a stepping stone to dive further into the series.

PSX Brasil - Thiago de Alencar Moura - Portuguese - 90 / 100

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a great remake not only of an excellent Action RPG, but of one of the best and most influential games of the golden age of JRPGs. With a unique and pleasant look, considerable novelties in its gameplay that will keep even long-time players engaged, and several quality-of-life improvements, Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a must-have for fans of the genre.

Press Start - James Mitchell - 9.5 / 10

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is a tremendous remake. It gives the original game a visual overhaul that is simultaneously modern and nostalgic. But it doesn't stop there. It breaks open the mechanics to offer much more depth without destroying the spirit of the original. It's far and away the best way to experience one of the best Star Ocean games and one of the best RPGs ever made. If you're a fan of the genre, you owe it to yourself to check out The Second Story R. It's an absolute gem of a game that's endlessly playable and effortlessly stylish.

Push Square - Robert Ramsey - 8 / 10

Star Ocean The Second Story R is exactly what it needs to be: a faithful remake of a classic PS1 RPG that greatly enhances the experience for both new and returning players. A wonderful visual overhaul combined with numerous quality of life improvements and expanded battle mechanics make this a borderline must-play for anyone who's looking for an old-school adventure. Although the underlying PS1-era design does still have some rough edges - particularly in the storytelling and combat balance - it's hard to knock such a well crafted revival.

RPG Fan - Izzy Parsons - 92%

I can't think of a remake of a game that feels more definitive than this one. All fans of the original deserve to play Star Ocean: The Second Story R, and so does everyone else.

Saudi Gamer - Arabic - 8 / 10

Star Ocean Second Story R is riding heavily on the new visuals and audios which made the fan's favorite Star Ocean game even better, but the clunky manual dodge button they added and the major difficulty spikes are what's holding this gorgeous remake back from becoming a modern masterpiece

Siliconera - Jenni Lada - 9 / 10

Star Ocean The Second Story is among its best games in the series, and I believe the R release cements its role as the strongest entry.

Sirus Gaming - Conrad Huang - 8 / 10

With everything said and done, I believe that this game is something worth getting on any console, especially on the PlayStation 5. My recommendation for those who wish to experience what it is like to play JRPG games during the early 2000s, they should get the demo first and if they are comfortable with it, get the full game as soon as it is released.

Spaziogames - Gianluca Arena - Italian - 8 / 10

Seeme like Square Enix has finally found a way to give value to its enormous catalogues of great JRPGs: after Live a Live and Tactics Ogre Reborn, Star Ocean Second Story R marks the third successful entry in this newfound current of remakes. A great journey for both veterans of the genre and newcomers.

The Games Machine - Danilo Dellafrana - Italian - 8.5 / 10

Star Ocean The Second Story R is an over-the-top remake that comprehensively improves on the original game, bringing the best-loved chapter of the celebrated tri-Ace series up to date once again. A few improvements tend to further crack the mechanisms of a game that was not particularly balanced to begin with, but overall it's an old-fashioned JRPG experience that won't fail to thrill fans of the genre.

TheGamer - Ryan Thomas Bamsey - 4 / 5

Without spoiling things, Star Ocean eventually devolves into schlocky cliché territory, but by that point, you’re firmly on board, ticket purchased and ready to see its journey through to the end. Star Ocean: The Second Story got the remake treatment for a reason - it’s a classic of the genre with compelling characters, wonderful storytelling, and oodles of satisfying mechanics. R goes to great lengths to streamline the Star Ocean experience and make it more beautiful (the new arranged soundtrack is glorious), and while it might have sustained a bit of the difficulty that made the original a triumph to overcome, it still squarely sticks the landing.

Video Chums - A.J. Maciejewski - 8 / 10

It was wonderful revisiting Rena and Claude yet again in STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R and it's undoubtedly the best edition of their grand journey so far. I wasn't expecting to be reminded of as much retro baggage as I was, though, but it's still a great RPG. 🌌

Wccftech - Francesco De Meo - 9 / 10

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is, hands down, the best entry in the series, and one of the best remakes ever made. With the excellent combat reworking, massive slew of quality of life improvements and impressive 2D-HD visuals that make the game's simple yet engaging story and charming characters even more enjoyable, Gemdrops has set a very high bar for classic JRPGs remakes that will be very difficult to top.

I hang out in a couple circles that have fans of Gust's massive Atelier series. The promise of a laid-back, generally cheerful experience always sounded appealing and a nice change of pace from the typical RPG story's apocalyptic stakes. I've also always liked crafting systems in these kinds of games. I just needed a good entry point.

I had a rough start with the series when trying Mana Khemia, with its confusing character advancement system and slightly-too-cute aesthetic. That's all on top of needing to figure out how the crafting system works. I decided to step forward a generation to the remastered version of Atelier Rorona.

One thing Rorona had that Mana Khemia didn't was very clear direction right from the start. Atelier Rorona is one of those that give the series its reputation for a having a time limit, but I think that mechanic worked for me in the end. It nudged me just enough to figure out the alchemy system and to get efficient with it and my travel (even if it means I'd probably hate trying to 100% this game).

The low-stakes plot was there, and I got a "good" ending, even though I came nowhere close to clearing the combat content. Both are refreshing elements to someone like me that has so much experience in the genre. Having tons of Rune Factory-style plot triggers around town was always enjoyable, due in no small part to how genuinely funny the dialogue could be at times.

It wasn't so easy at first, and I had to take on this game in small chunks for a while as I was learning its mechanics. Now, I think investing in Rorona could be paying off. I've moved on to Atelier Totori and I'm feeling more confident right from the start, now that I know the alchemy basics.

Taking a chance on this one unlocked a big series for me. I'll have a ton of games to catch up on at this rate!

Rock Paper Shotgun also reported on this WSJ piece if you'd rather read about this topic there.

It's too bad you didn't like the narrative structure with the calls in CP2077. That one ending uses them (or I guess you could call them voicemails, considering) to devastating effect. One of the most harrowing sequences I've seen in a game. It might have even saved a couple of lives.

I struggled with Samus Returns and the Prime games weren't my vibe, so I have to go back a long way for great Metroid. After seeing good reviews and a lot of positive word-of-mouth for Metroid Dread, it was near the top of my list of games to play when I'd finally pick up a Switch.

I was finally able to get my hands on my own copy of the game recently, and it started out promising, tapping into some of my Super Metroid memories. Unfortunately, I never really did get on with the game's stealth sections--if you want to call it that--with the EMMIs. Frustrating doesn't even begin to describe it. I hit game over more in this game than in every other Metroid game I've played, combined.

The game does eventually open up and it quickly grabbed me when it did. There is some incredible boss design here and (mostly) good map design. Locking map connection shortcuts behind power bombs wasn't a good move considering when you get them, but that faded to a minor annoyance by the end. After Samus Returns, it's easy to forget that you're supposed to get a bit lost.

What may be the highlight for me was, surprisingly, an interesting story. It's mostly told through atmosphere and subtle storytelling, like Hollow Knight, but there are some well-crafted cinematics sprinkled in. Samus is as expressive here as I've ever seen her. A really satisfying ending caps it off.

I'm excited to see what's next for the series. It's just a shame Dread has the EMMI sections because it just about guarantees I'll never replay it.

Unfortunately, it's also here again with 2.0 so far. I started playing the game in 1.3, so this is the most buggy I've ever seen it. Vertex explosions, jumpy character animations, skills not working correctly, incorrect sound effects being played.

This is indeed the new normal, and I shouldn't expect Phantom Liberty to run smoothly next week either. If took months after the recent big Witcher 3 update for it to play okay on mid-spec systems.

I think I was happier when I still catching up on games from a couple generations ago. Now that I've done that, I keep running into this stuff. 😕

Shit-talking the god was worth the price of admission, too.

Or, as I did, don't drop a class mid-term because it's not going well and end up sliding into part-time status. Poof, scholarship gone. I woulda been better off taking the F.
