I don't think this is true, Lemmy is already using rel="canonical" which should be telling Google what the real URL is, like here on programming.dev I see this in the page source

<link data-inferno-helmet="true" rel="canonical" href="https://lemmy.world/post/19493729">

which is why the Google results for this search don't show a million different instances mirroring it

https://www.google.com/search?q=Lemmy+wouldn't+really+takeoff+to+replace+Reddit+until+it's+content+is+search+indexable

https://www.semrush.com/blog/canonical-url-guide/

Here was the discussion about it where it was fixed last year https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/1418

used to buy the tickets to the park

the restaurant was not in a ticketed park, it was in Disney Springs which is a freely accessible public area

account portability is a big topic in 'verse developer circles

I think community portability is a way bigger deal, at least here

I think if communities could have aliases/mirrors, that would mostly fix the problem without completely rewriting all of the ActivityPub spec?

for reference, this is what it looks like on Mastodon, the post to !announcements@lemmy.ml it gets the hashtag for announcements

it's not really part of the message text, it's separate

So ffmpeg gets a few thousand dollars for such a simple answer/solution? Sounds good to me?

yea people get drowned out by these bots and they feel less inclined to contribute. I know I was less likely to leave a comment on Reddit when there were already many comments. I was less likely to post on Reddit when a subreddit was already getting many posts. I post and comment more here on Lemmy because it doesn't get drowned out. If we wanna grow then it needs to be natural, not via bots.

everyone do yourself a favor and go to your settings page and uncheck the option for "Show Bot Accounts", it's unfortunate that I can't keep the few good bots visible but there's just too much bot spam now.

We're also on ModDB now https://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-randomizer

Our GitHub will still be our main home, however it seems that ModDB is taking votes for Mod of the Year :)

If you don't know what Deus Ex Randomizer is, then here's our old trailer which shows a breakdown of how it works:

v2.0 Trailer

See the full README here. Also check out our Discord and Mods4Ever.com

WaltonWare and Bingo improvements and fixes

  • New WaltonWare Entrance Rando mode! This combines the two game modes into one, for extra craziness.
  • Fixed BingoViewer sometimes failing to read the file
  • Scopes can now do "watch x" bingo goals without needing binoculars
  • Fem JC can now always pay for companionship
  • Sub base Jock immediately available in WaltonWare, this way you can immediately go to Silo if you have bingo goals there. This also helps if you're playing the new WaltonWare Entrance Rando mode. We felt like this was one of the toughest missions in WaltonWare so this should help balance them more.
  • New Game+ will now only allow you to carry over 5 of the same type of item (not counting stacked items). This mostly affects armor and camo hoarding, especially by MQDuck
  • Made skills more attainable after many loops, and reduced how many augs you get each loop
  • Flaming barrels are now moveable.
  • Kills and knockouts of characters are now distinguished (so knocking someone out won't count as a kill for bingo)
  • Added more pigeon generators and fish generators
  • Slightly improved RNG for random starting map
  • More bingo events

Major Changes

  • Installer now has an option to apply fixes to vanilla as well, sort of like a "Zero Changes" mode as an alternative to "Zero Rando" mode for the purists.
  • New color theme: Health - the color of your HUD is determined by how much health you have.
  • Toned down the Rando color theme speed
  • Added option to make flickering and strobing lights more chill (epilepsy-safe mode)
  • Ninja JC mode now allows mini-crossbow and knife, this provides more variety without dominating the ninja playstyle
  • Weapon mods can now be automatically applied to the weapon in your hand
  • Fixed weapon mods being randomized in Zero Rando mode
  • Tweaked number of medbots in Serious Sam mode
  • Nerfed randomized cameras and turrets, reduced their range and firing speed
  • Added a Forgot Your Password button to the Helios Computer room in Area 51 to let you replay the infolink giving you the password.
  • Fixed rotation of Dragon's Tooth Sword in mirrored maps, especially for the sniper nest location
  • Fixed issues with Gordon and Max moving to the temple when pawns get in the way. Ensure the monk doesn't spawn in until the ceremony (as intended) and clear pigeons out of the way.
  • Slightly reduced issues with in-fighting, we're still working on eliminating these
  • Fixed Zero Rando/Rando Lite Paul conversation skip
  • Reduced simulated Crowd Control frequency
  • Fixed Tong's dialog after doing Versalife before doing the UC, he would keep rambling and advance the story too far
  • Fixed "time bonus" going below 0 points
  • Removed demolition skill scaling the fuse time of grenades thrown by enemies
  • Prevented certain things from being placed in skyboxes, like a datacube in Versalife
  • Added TNT crate in Ship Below Decks locked closet, mostly for Stick With the Prod players, with added key for that door
  • Vandenberg Command keypads now glow white

Minor Changes

  • Fixed the grenades in the Training mission
  • Fixed police datacube about Maggie Chow being shuffled, since reading it has consequences
  • Added small crate to Liberty Island behind the electricity so you can't get stuck
  • Moved Mission 2 Underground datacube out of the water, which caused issues trying to read it
  • Mission 2 Underground added more possible item locations
  • Fixed lasers in Oceanlab UC so they only trigger the doors once, same for the Dockyard sewer lasers
  • Vandenberg sub base elevator now crushes when encroached, so it doesn't get stuck
  • Speedrun mode added notes for each split in DXRSplits.ini file
  • Illuminated dangerous stairs in Paris apartment
  • Fixed RiotCop always being immune to pepper spray even without visor
  • Oceanlab backtracking buttons for greasel lab and crew module
  • Fixed rotation for security computer in Area 51 mirrored map
  • Fixed autosave causing the player to bounce upwards
  • For non-vanilla mods, fixed the binoculars starting item to use our customized version instead of regular binoculars

Honestly too many things to list. When it's finished the devs will post the changelog. But the scaled sort option is a popular addition, remote follow is cool, giving users the ability to block instances, and a bunch of fixes too.

There's been some posts about a few of the updates, but a complete changelog won't be until the release happens, which should be this year?

WaltonWare mode is focused on quick wins by completing a single bingo line, and increasing difficulty after every win. The bingo goals are all scaled to their minimum settings and you start in a random area. All bingo goals will be completable within just a few maps!

I just made this post https://programming.dev/post/4307457

but it isn't showing up here https://sh.itjust.works/c/speedrun

I had a similar issue on a previous post but I didn't think much of a single failure and fixed that one myself by doing the search

https://programming.dev/post/4295735

but now I see it happening again and with a different instance I think there's something wrong

Man this game was complicated, no wonder I never really figured out how to play it lol. I did enjoy mixing the monsters though!

Why is this subreddit now just askreddit for movies?

Some time in the last few months, r/movies has been entirely consumed by askreddit-style questions like "What's your favorite hidden gem??" or "What actor fell off the map??"

[...]

What is now causing all these unique, seemingly-non-bot posters to suddenly start flooding this particular subreddit with their discussion posts, instead of going to askreddit? Did the whole reddit protest shit change the moderation rules? Has the subreddit been infiltrated by a secret Buzzfeed content farming cabal? I unsubscribed from r/askreddit because I got sick of this shit, but now it's back on r/movies!

What is going on??

I think the comments are most interesting though

Because the audience for reddit has dwindled since July. Reddits offial site and app push controversial posts over just well yovkted ones. Most controversial posts asks inane questions. Then there's bots reposting those questions for karma and then websites juicing social media for content to get crammed down your throat via SEO.

They should make a second internet just for people

This all started with the boycott.

[...]

I’d assumed things would go back to “normal” after the boycott, but it looks like a lot of power users really did take their ball and go home. (I wonder what they’re doing with their time instead? Hopefully some new hobbies? Time with friends?) Maybe reddit will regret removing the 3rd party apps, after all? Maybe we’ll just accept a future where niche subs become little more than BuzzFeed polls, but we get paid if our poll does well, so users won’t care?

It's because Reddit is trying to drive engagement. I don't know if you noticed, but since the purge of third-party apps, the comment sections have been kind of meager, and things don't get as many upvotes as they used to. Heck, half the comments act like bots anyway. It seems like reddit has been distilled down to those most addicted to it and has taken a hard lean into all the most extreme views.

When Reddit killed third party apps, the quality fell off all over the place. It took me about a month to realize the timing and why r/all had so much AITA rage bait stories and celebrity gossip and stuff now. I think a lot of the quality posters and people who liked more high brow discussions just left Reddit.

or maybe some other terminology would be better? lots of people get confused when you ask them to choose an instance, sometimes I think even the word "proxy", "host", or "hub" is simpler

the specific terms aren't my point, just a discussion to see if we can come up with a better name

https://join-lemmy.org/docs/users/03-votes-and-ranking.html

"New Comments: Bumps posts to the top when they are created or receive a new reply, analogous to the sorting of traditional forums"

I feel like this is underutilized and can be really good for keeping old discussions alive and reused. It brings us back to the old school forums ways. On Reddit you see the same questions being asked over and over again every month or so (especially like on r/movies), if they had the New Comments sorting method then they wouldn't have to do that. And if you could subscribe to a post to get notifications about new comments that would be even better.

Now I'm also thinking Lemmy could have a Mixed sorting option to combine some of the main sorting methods, so you could see posts from Active, Hot, Top 6 hours, and New Comments all mixed together.

I think when telling someone to signup, don't give them a list of instances, just give them 2 to choose from

"Signup here, or here. Doesn't matter which one you pick because they're both linked and we'll be able to see the same posts."

Especially if you know their interests maybe you can suggest an instance focused on that, or one that hosts a community

UPDATE: seems like this has been fixed with the update to 0.18.1 https://programming.dev/instances

I can see their posts so I know they aren't actually banned

https://programming.dev/instances

looks like maybe they had their domain name set with the https:// in it and that was breaking stuff? has this been fixed in the Lemmy code yet? we shouldn't have to manually ban invalid domain names
