It's my turn to cook tonight. I'm doing a shakshuka.

Basically all of them.

A quick skim shows me that the only people who have called me this so far this year are:

  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Sister
  • Wife
  • Close friend

I expect that this would be much the same for last year too.

I have no reason not to speak to any of these.

At the point where you and the AI can see someone straightening their tie in a certain way and you and the AI can exchange a single wordless glance and you both burst out laughing 'cos it was just like that thing that you both saw 6 months ago and found hilarious then - then maybe.

Not before.

Biggest one for me was swapping from setting the alarm as late as possible and then rushing to get out of the house, to setting it an hour earlier and using that to read, do a little qi gong and have a leisurely breakfast.

I am a pagan. There are pretty much no widely accepted texts within paganism that make any statements about subject. In my experience most pagans are quite happy to coexist with other religions in general - and given that in almost all circumstances pagans will be in a small minority that makes perfect sense. On the other hand, most pagans that I know are far less happy to coexist with the more bigoted and hateful varieties of religion.

There is a strong feminist trend within paganism and this - particularly linked with the ahistorial but often assumed heritage of witchcraft, and the associated history of hanging and burning of witches - does not lead the more patriarchal end of the Abrahamic religions to sit well with a lot of pagans - and I know a lot who are far happier about visiting the roofless moss-covered shell of an abandoned church, with a hawthorn growing in the apse than they are visiting an occupied one (unless it is in search of a sheel-na-gig etc).

On the other hand, there is a strand of Norse paganism that crosses into white supremacy and neo-nazism, so that brings its own hate, bigotry and patriarchy. I do not know what their stance on other religions is.

This article is from 2009, of course.

Humans have spent most of their evolutionary history not drinking juice or soda or anything. It is absolutely fine - as long as you are eating healthily.

These days it is once in a blue moon that I drink anything except water myself. I don't believe that the very occasional elderflower presse is the only thing standing between me and a hideous malnourished death.

Since it is well established that Die Hard qualifies, by the same criterion so does Gilliam's Brazil from 1985, and that would be mine, for its gloriously nightmarish dystopia - closely followed by Klaus (2019), which is a far more conventional seasonal tale: an animation with a beautiful style of artwork and a great story.

If Fred & Bob are talking and 'he told him x and he responded with y" then that is also unclear. This is not a problem that is unique to the word 'they'.

Of course, in either case, the answer to use phrase it so that you remove any ambiguity and communicate clearly: "Sam told them x and the board responded with y.", "Bob told him x and Fred responded with y".

Avian flu has reached the Antarctic, raising concerns for isolated populations of penguins and seals that have never been exposed to the deadly H5N1 virus before. The full impact of the virus’s arrival is not yet known, but scientists are raising concerns about possible “catastrophic breeding failure” of the region’s fragile wildlife populations.

The virus was found in populations of a scavenging bird called brown skua on Bird Island, which is part of the British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. These migratory birds probably brought it with them from South America where bird flu is widespread and has already killed an estimated 500,000 seabirds and 20,000 sea lions in Chile and Peru alone.

Australians have resoundingly rejected a proposal to recognise Aboriginal people in its constitution and establish a body to advise parliament on Indigenous issues.

Saturday’s voice to parliament referendum failed, with the defeat clear shortly after polls closed.

With my car finally fixed (leaking water pump) at the last minute yesterday, I'm off to Snowdonia for a week of walking, reading and not doing much that I don't want to.

What have you got lined up?

That strong urge many people feel to abide by social norms even when it is individually harmful may have its roots in Darwinian fitness, according to a new study published in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.

"Even when only a minority of the population internalizes norms, it can have a big impact in terms of getting people to cooperate more and for longer," says Victor Odouard, a former predoctoral researcher at SFI and lead author of the study. "Our research offers an evolutionary explanation for why people will work together for the benefit of the group, even when it would be better for them, individually, not to do so."

In a four-line statement announcing the approval of the new Rosebank oil field 80 miles west of Shetland, the UK’s offshore oil and gas regulator showed its mission no longer serves the public good.

The announcement by the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), which regulates oil and gas extraction in the waters off the British coast, asserted that net zero considerations had been taken into account – a technical definition that makes it appear long-term oil production is compatible with climate goals. This has outraged and dismayed climate scientists, campaigners, and the many other people concerned about the UK’s faltering climate leadership.

I have had issues with the paper not feeding well and jamming as a result of high humidity in a copier/printer - but this was a cool/cold high-humidity site in the UK.

That was resolved by fitting an optional heated paper drawer.

Should be a fairly normal day for me today, some hedge-trimming and so on in the garden on Saturday and then my SO is arranging a mystery trip for Sunday. It's been postponed twice so far and I have no idea what it is.

I have a meeting this morning that is pretty much doomed from the outset, but I still need to go through the motions.

After that, I acquired an unexpected gazebo yesterday, so I would like to get that up this evening to make the most of the next couple couple of weeks, since we are seemingly due for sunny weather.

And then I have a day booked off on Friday just because. Maybe I will spend it in the gazebo, reading.

I do and have for most of my life. I lived on an island where my SO and I were the only permanent residents for 8 years.

I have lived in the suburbs of a couple of large towns/small cities for some years too - and in the centre of an all-but-city and although there is some convenience in those, I'd choose rural any day. The peace, proximity to nature and the ease of getting out for enjoyable walks beats convenience every time for me.

I'm out to a play and a meal this evening and hope to get out for a hike tomorrow but I'm working as usual on Monday.
