It's funny because rich people notoriously do NOT pay the wages of police because they tax dodge so hard that it often crosses the line of illegal, even with all of the extremely pro-mega-rich laws and exemptions that america has.

Not "technically" discontinued, but almost

Buying products and owning them.

Buying products and getting full repair manuals and electrical schematics

Cathode ray tubes

Overbuilt refrigerators and washing machines

Clothes that last and are repairable

Houses built with full bricks and iron with actual straight walls and unbroken woodwork

Depends on what your usecase is for what is "essential."

I think keeping household documents, taxes, medical bills, etc... In a local only paperless-ngx instance is quite essential to the organization of a household where everything is searchable and able to be organized on multiple levels compared to a simple document folder on 1 computer.

Having a document or self-hosted wiki with an in - case - of - death document that gets backed up in an encrypted, but accessible by family place is probably the most "essential" thing.

What would I want to do?

  • Cut down the 2 larger trees and 10 mini trees (originally hedges) that we marked for removal

  • deep clean the house

  • climb in the crawlspace and drill the pipe brackets I need to

  • finally go weightlifting after months of no time or willpower

  • play saxophone

  • meditate

  • go for a long run

  • play with my dog and go adventuring for an hour or 2

  • cook a new meal I haven't tried before

  • watch a movie with my girlfriend

  • take an edible

  • play some games with the boys

What would I likely do?

  • sleep

  • mow the grass and rake leaves

  • play rimworld

  • watch Castle with my girlfriend

  • eat leftovers

Sorry, but this only applies to drills and sanding machines. Maybe a bench grinder also you can cheap out on. Hand tools are fine to cheap out on also.

Circular saw, table saws, miter saws, angle grinders, etc..

Any spinning blade, if you cheap out, don't be surprised if you get life-alteringly injured when you "use it enough to break it". I was just helping some friends renovate where they had a dirt cheap miter saw and it was just about the most dangerous experience of my life.

If you are doing any big renovations, at least get makita, Milwaukee, or dewalt. You can get a TON of cheaper stuff second hand. Quality at a lower price. I got a professional older model hilti hammer drill at a tiny fraction of the price.

Why does it matter?

[-] JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl 23 points 9 months ago

I find is very funny because I seem to remember the conservative chant back in the 2010s was "wake up america" or "wake up sheeple "

People "woke" up.

Conservatives: "No not like that." "Woke is destroying America"

If you go for WD red plus 12TB drives, they are helium filled and less noisy even than the 8TB air versions.

I have one and it is silent when not tracking, but all hard drives have some seeking noise. Mostly because it is irregular so human ears pick it up more than white fan or spinning noise.

Best idea for absolute noise reduction in the same room is getting a good closed case, reinforcing with some foam panels with a direct air path that you can direct through a cupboard cutout for example.

What you are looking for is high capacity SSDs in this situation, but that is pricey.

No no no, our pocket computers becoming too much like another company's pocket computers definitely is a bigger issue! Get your priorities straight!

Get rid of the cable and add heat

The problem with adding high bandwidth wifi is that it adds quite a bit of heat to a device. That's why high bandwidth wifi 6e devices and 10 gigabit Ethernet devices get quite warm. Many cameras already have a lot of heat problems because video sensors and processing already generates quite a bit of heat. Wireless always generates more heat than wired due to much higher amplification, transmit power, and demodulation requirements.

72 Hz was used as a refresh rate for CRT monitors back in the day. Specifically because it was the average threshold that no users reported discomfort from CRT flicker. And 72 * 2.

It is likely a holdover from that era. I think from there, it is a multiple of 24 HZ so movie content scaled smoothly without tearing before vsync? Last part is a guess.

  • Apples & cinnamon

  • banana and walnuts

  • blueberries and strawberries when cooking the oats in milk (doesn't work well with nutmilks)

  • peanut butter oats

  • overnight oats of various forms
